Accelerating the measurement for discrimination of samples, such as classification of cell phenotype, is crucial when faced with significant time and cost constraints. Spontaneous Raman microscopy offers label-free, rich chemical information but suffers from long acquisition time due to extremely small scattering cross-sections. One possible approach to accelerate the measurement is by measuring necessary parts with a suitable number of illumination points. However, how to design these points during measurement remains a challenge...

AIMS: Tumour necrosis and/or increased mitoses define high-grade papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). It is unclear whether angioinvasion is prognostic for PTC. Cut-offs at five or more mitoses/2 mm2 and four or more angioinvasive foci have been empirically defined based upon data from all forms of aggressive non-anaplastic thyroid carcinomas. Performance of tumour necrosis, mitoses and vascular invasion in predicting distant metastases when specifically applied to PTC is undefined...

It is usually believed that differentiated thyroid cancer is less likely to have distant metastases and rarely occurs secondary to hyperthyroidism. In our case report, we describe a patient diagnosed with thyroid fetal adenoma in 2002 who subsequently presented with a painful lump in her right rib. Through puncture biopsy, the mass was considered as metastatic follicular thyroid carcinoma, and then she appeared to have hyperthyroidism. The results of SPECT examination and other tests suggested that the hyperthyroidism was secondary to the thyroid cancer...

OBJECTIVE: To study the profile, management, and outcomes of follicular cell-derived thyroid cancer (FCDTC) before publication of the 2016 American Thyroid Association guidelines recommending less aggressive thyroid cancer procedures. METHODS: Patients with FCDTC were seen by one thyroidologist at Mayo Clinic during the 2015 calendar year. Patients underwent surgical procedures for FCDTC in 2015 or earlier at the Mayo Clinic or another institution. Follow-up data were collected from January 1, 2016, through July 20, 2022...

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Highly differentiated follicular carcinoma of the ovary (HDFCO) is a rare type of thyroid carcinoma originating from struma ovarii, consisting of benign-appearing thyroid follicles spread outside the ovarian tissue. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a 22-year-old girl who underwent left salpingo-oophorectomy, omental, and peritoneal biopsies for a complex left ovarian mass. Microscopic examination and Immunohistochemical staining led to the diagnosis of HDFCO with tumor deposits affecting the omental and peritoneal biopsies...

It is crucial for doctors to decide whether a thyroid nodule is benign or malignant when a patient presents with one, as it will significantly impact how the patient is managed in the future. However, it is not as straightforward to determine between the two; even a physical examination, thyroid function test, ultrasonography, and biopsy have been well performed. It can be more stressful if a patient has an increased risk of malignancy, such as age (below 20- and above 60-year-old), solid nodule, rapid growth, hoarseness, lymphadenopathy, and microcalcifications on the ultrasonography...

BACKGROUND: While track recurrence of thyroid cancer following endoscopic and robotic transaxillary surgeries has been reported previously, no such cases have been reported for transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy vestibular approach (TOETVA). This case report describes the first documented case of recurrence of thyroid cancer along the surgical track after TOETVA. BACKGROUND: Malignant Struma Ovarii (MSO) is a rare type of germ cell tumour which is diagnosed postoperatively on surgical pathology specimens by the presence of differentiated thyroid cancer in mature cystic teratomas in the ovaries. Treatment and follow-up procedures are not clearly established due to the paucity of MSO cases. CASE 1: A 44-year-old multiparous female presented with an irregular period. Ultrasound showed a left ovarian lesion mostly a dermoid cyst, however, CT showed a 3...

PURPOSE: We systematically reviewed the case report literature to identify cases of uveal metastases originating from thyroid cancer (TC), evaluate factors and indications in uveal metastases from TC, and provide clinical insights through recent case studies. METHODS: Web of Science, Medline, and Scopus databases were searched for case reports or series reporting uveal metastasis from a thyroid neoplasm. Articles published in any language from inception through November 2022 were searched and screened independently by two reviewers...

Thyroid gland is an uncommon site for these tumors, with frequently involved organs being liver, adrenal and stomach. Thyroglossal cyst (TGC) is the most common congenital anomaly of the thyroid gland and is found in approximately 7% of general population. It represents cystic degeneration of a remnant of the thyroglossal duct that failed to involute during gestation. Malignancy occurring in TGC is rare entity, accounting only for 1% of all thyroglossal cysts. We are presenting such a rare case of papillary thyroid carcinoma arising in a thyroglossal cyst. 30-year-old female presented with a painless, gradually progressive swelling below the chin extending to left side...

Histological analysis is the core of follicular thyroid carcinoma (FTC) classification. The histopathological criteria of capsular and vascular invasion define malignancy and aggressiveness of FTC. Analysis of multiple sections is cumbersome and as only a minute tissue fraction is analyzed during histopathology, under-sampling remains a problem. Application of an efficient tool for complete tissue imaging in 3D would speed-up diagnosis and increase accuracy. We show that X-ray propagation-based imaging (XPBI) of paraffin-embedded tissue blocks is a valuable complementary method for follicular thyroid carcinoma diagnosis and assessment...

Poorly differentiated thyroid carcinomas (PDTC) are rare diseases; nevertheless, they account for the majority of deaths from non-anaplastic follicular cell-derived thyroid carcinomas. Establishing the diagnosis and treatment of PDTC is challenging given the low incidence and the lack of standardization of diagnostic criteria. These limitations hamper the ability to compare therapeutic modalities and outcomes between recent and older studies. Recently, the 5th edition of the classification of endocrine tumors has been published, which includes changes in nomenclature and the addition of the disease entity of "differentiated high-grade follicular cell-derived carcinomas"...
