An interdisciplinary treatment plan is often required to allow restoration of function and aesthetics in the "mutilated dentition". Loss of teeth is associated with social and psycological impacts for the patient, however most often aesthetic requirements and financial constraints predominate in the treatment decision making. Historically, unfavourable occlusal contacts have been viewed as predisposing factors in the development of temporo-mandibular joint dysfunction (TMD). This linkage has now been refuted by many authors and it is understood that occlusion may be a co-factor only in TMD...

A small subset of breast and ovarian cancers is related to the mutation of dominant susceptibility genes. The recent isolation of BRCA1 and BRCA2 has created great interest and expectations among members of families with a positive history for breast/ovarian cancer. We reviewed the literature to explore the clinical implications of genetic testing for BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations among high risk women. Both the value of the information provided by the test and the efficacy of the preventive and diagnostic measures presently available have been examined...

Psychiatric reactions to disasters have not received sufficient attention because it is widely accepted that human beings can endure any kind of extreme stress.A disaster is the consequence of an extraordinary event that destroys goods, kills people, produces physical or psychological harm but, above all, which overcomes the adaptive possibilities of the social group. Disasters have strong political background and consequences. They shake the life of a community and bear with them a set of questions about safety, social organization and meaning of life...

The author analyses the correlation between work psychopathology, migration and the role of the occupational physician. Migration was studied and analysed by many clinical psychiatrists, occupational psychiatrists and sociologists, who tried to investigate the possible consequences produced by this event on the psychological equilibrium, on social life and on working activities. It is unquestionable, according to the actual knowledge, that a strict correlation exists between work and psyche, or among the uneasiness of the work, cultural belonging and a psychopathology of the work...

The aim of this study is to evaluate the utility of surgical treatment in patients with pectus excavatum (PE) or pectus carinatum (PC). Fifteen patients underwent surgical treatment because of their psycological and anatomical condition, more serious in 6 patients (5 with PE and 1 with PC). The degree of these chest wall deformities was evaluated as resulting from CT scan of the thorax, by the ratio between the transversal and the front/back diameters, according to Haller. The Authors recommend surgical operation in the post-puberal age up to 21 years because of good results obtained using Ravitch approach (only 1 case of partial relapse of PE), even though modified in PE cases with the application of flat steel prosthesis and in PC cases for uncutting the perichondral beds...

This article examines the available data on the health status of Puerto Rican women in the United States. Statistics on reproductive health, cancer and AIDS indicate that the health status of these women is lower than that of both their U.S. and island counterparts. Usually, the health of immigrants lies somewhere between that of the population of the country of origin, and that of the 'host' country. Puerto Rican women, however, deviate from this pattern. The health lag which U.S. Puerto Rican women are experiencing suggests that the social dislocation which accompanies migration has not diminished over time...
