INTRODUCTION: "Subureteric Teflon INGection" (STING) of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE/polytef) paste to treat vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) in children was popularised in 1984. It was later abandoned as an implantation material because of the possibility of migration from the injection site. Giant-cell foreign-body granuloma to Polytef in the bladder is a rare cause of ureteric obstruction. Only a handful of cases have been reported in the literature. METHODS: We performed a prospective analysis of a series of 6 adult patients who had childhood STING and presented with foreign-body granuloma to Polytef in the bladder...

PURPOUSE: One of the many artificial intelligence based tools that has gained popularity is the Chat-Generative Pre-Trained Transformer (ChatGPT). Due to its popularity, incorrect information provided by ChatGPT will have an impact on patient misinformation. Furthermore, it may cause misconduct as ChatGPT can mislead physicians on the decision-making pathway. Therefore, the aim of this study is to evaluate the accuracy and reproducibility of ChatGPT answers regarding urological diagnoses...

In this edition of Mythbusters, we examine the premise that prevalence of vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) in children varies by race. Specifically, we consider whether there is evidence supporting the contention that VUR is more common in White children and less common in Black children. Statements regarding the lower prevalence of VUR in Black children are ubiquitous in both research papers and reviews. Many of the references cited in support of these statements do not actually support the existence of racial variation in VUR, due to uncontrolled single-arm study designs, highly selected samples at risk for bias, or simply not addressing VUR prevalence at all...

Primary vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) is the prevailing congenital anomaly of the kidneys and urinary tract, posing a significant risk for pyelonephritis scarring and chronic renal insufficiency in pediatric patients. Nevertheless, the precise genetic etiology of VUR remains enigmatic. In this current investigation, we conducted whole-exome sequencing on a child exhibiting single kidney, devoid of any familial VUR background, along with both biological parents. Two missense variants (NM_019105.8: exon11: c.4111G>A and NM_019105...

BACKGROUND: Voiding cystourethrography (VCUG) is the gold standard for the diagnosis and grading of vesicoureteral reflux (VUR). However, VUR grading from voiding cystourethrograms is highly subjective with low reliability. This study aimed to develop a deep learning model to improve reliability for VUR grading on VCUG and compare its performance to that of clinicians. METHODS: In this retrospective study in China, VCUG images were collected between January 2019 and September 2022 from our institution as an internal dataset for training and 4 external data sets as external testing set for validation...

BACKGROUND: Vesico-ureteral reflux (VUR) is a common associated urological anomaly in anorectal malformation (ARM)-patients. High-grade VUR requires antibiotic prophylaxis to prevent urinary tract infections (UTI's), renal scarring and -failure. The exact prevalence of high-grade VUR in ARM patients is unknown. Hence, the aim of this study was determining the incidence of high-grade VUR in ARM-patients, and its associated risk factors. METHODS: A multicenter retrospective cohort study was performed using the ARM-Net registry, including data from 34 centers...

The article aims to find potential biomarker for the detection of tubular damage in pediatric neurogenic bladder (NB) by investigating urinary levels of liver-type fatty acid-binding protein (uL-FABP). This prospective analysis was conducted on two groups: 42 children with NB and 18 healthy children. The uL-FABP concentrations were measured using ELISA methods. The medical charts of the children were examined to determine age, sex, anthropometric measurements, activity assessment using Hoffer's scale, and renal function parameters...

Posterior urethral valve (PUV) is a common cause of obstructive uropathy in children, leading to renal failure and frequently associated with vesicoureteral reflux (VUR), which can rapidly progress to end-stage renal disease (ESRD). We describe a rare presentation of high-grade VUR opacifying the renal pyramids in a 5-month-old child with sepsis and renal failure.

INTRODUCTION: Duplex renal collecting system or duplex kidney (DK) commonly is associated with uropathy, with upper pole obstruction or lower pole vesicoureteral reflux (VUR). Its management is variable, ranging from therapeutic abstention to total nephrectomy. In case of damage to a single renal pole, uretero-ureteral anastomosis (UUA) is one of the surgical techniques for preserving the pathological pole. It can be performed by laparotomy, laparoscopy, or both. The aims of this study are to report the results of UUA in pathological DK, and compare outcomes depending on the surgical approach...

The clinical data of 140 children with grade I-V VUR receiving CAP were analyzed. In this study, exposure variables were sex, younger age at the initial diagnosis of UTI ≤ 12 months, the occurrence of breakthrough urinary tract infection (BT-UTI), high-grade VUR, bilateral VUR, etiology, presence of renal scarring at the initial diagnosis and ultrasound abnormalities...

BACKGROUND: While the Randomized Intervention for Children with Vesicoureteral Reflux (RIVUR) trial found that long-term antimicrobial prophylaxis reduced the risk of urinary tract infection (UTI) recurrences by 50%, 10 children had to be treated for one to benefit (i.e., observed number needed to treat (NNT) of 10). Accordingly, we re-analyzed RIVUR data to systematically identify subgroups of children with vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) with a smaller NNT. METHODS: Using patient-level data from the RIVUR trial, we applied penalized regression methods including the baseline age, VUR grade, type of index UTI, and bowel-bladder dysfunction (BBD) as covariates to identify subgroups...

AIMS: The negative impact on quality of life and the economic-related burden to the patient and the health care system associated with idiopathic overactive bladder (iOAB) is well-documented. Intradetrusor OnabotulinumtoxinA (BTN/A) injections are a well-used treatment modality for the management of overactive detrusor refractory to medical management, with well-documented efficacy and safety profiles. There is currently no best practice guideline for the administration of BTN/A for this procedure and historically the trigone of the bladder has been excluded from the injection paradigm given the risk of vesicoureteral reflux (VUR)...

Contrasting data refer to therapies for vesicoureteral reflux (VUR), such as surgical treatments and continuous antibiotic prophylaxis (CAP). This study evaluated the effectiveness of these approaches in children with VUR, analyzing the recurrence of febrile urinary tract infections (UTIs) and the resolution of VUR after the treatment. A total of 350 pediatric patients underwent contrast-enhanced voiding urosonography (ceVUS) to diagnose a VUR, whereas renal scintigraphy evaluated potential scars. After 12 months from the treatment, the VUR, the relapse of febrile UTIs, and reflux-related nephropathy were analyzed...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The prescriptive literature on vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) is still limited and thus the level of evidence is generally low. The aim of these guidelines is to provide a practical approach to the treatment of VUR that is based on risk analysis and selective indications for both diagnostic tests and interventions.
