BACKGROUND: High-power short-duration ablation has shown impressive efficacy and safety for pulmonary vein isolation (PVI); however, initial efficacy results with very high power short-duration ablation were discouraging. This study compared the long-term durability of PVI performed with a 90- versus 50-W power setting. METHODS: Patients were randomized 1:1 to undergo PVI with the QDOT catheter using a power setting of 90 or 50 W. Three months after the index procedure, patients underwent a repeat electrophysiology study to identify pulmonary vein reconnections...

OBJECTIVES: Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) is increasingly utilized for the noninvasive assessment of renal cystic lesions, using the Bosniak grading system. Bosniak 3-4 lesions require surgical referral, which allows correlation with the histopathological outcome. METHODS: In this single-center, retrospective study we evaluated renal CEUS exams conducted with SonoVue® with a diagnosis of a Bosniak 3 or 4 lesion between 2019 and 2022. A total of 49 patients and 50 lesions met the inclusion criteria, 31 lesions had available histopathological results...

OBJECTIVE: Alcohol-related seizures (ARS) are one of the most important consequences of alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS). However, demographic and clinical characteristics, and furthermore, the relationship of ARS with delirium tremens (DT), have not yet been evaluated in detail. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to reveal the correlates of ARS and examine the interaction of ARS with the occurrence of DT and with the severity of AWS. METHODS: In the retrospective study (Study 1) 2851 medical charts of inpatient admissions characterized by AWS and DT were listed...

Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors reduce major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) in type 2 diabetic (T2DM) patients. Pharmacological selectivity of these agents to SGLT2 over SGLT1 is highly variant, with unknown clinical relevance. Genetically reduced SGLT1-but not SGLT2-activity correlates with lower risk of heart failure and mortality, therefore additional non-selective SGLT1 inhibition might be beneficial. In this prespecified meta-analysis, we included 6 randomized, placebo-controlled cardiovascular outcome trials of SGLT2 inhibitors assessing MACE in 57,553 patients with T2DM...

Aims: To report our single-center data regarding the initial 52 consecutive patients with a bicuspid aortic valve who underwent a Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) procedure using the new balloon-expandable MYVAL system. The focus is on reporting procedural details and outcomes over the 30-day postoperative period. Methods: From December 2019 to July 2023, 52 consecutive patients underwent a TAVI procedure with bicuspid anatomy. All patients had moderate to-high surgical risk or were unsuitable for surgical aortic valve replacement based on the Heart Team's decision...

BACKGROUND: Plerixafor is a bicyclam molecule with the ability to reversibly bind to receptor CXCR-4 thus leading to an increased release of stem cells (SC) into the circulation. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of G-CSF plus plerixafor versus G-CSF alone mobilizing regimens on the basis of CD34+ cell yield and engraftment kinetics following hematopoietic SC transplants. DNA polymerases constitute a versatile group of enzymes that not only perform the essential task of genome duplication but also participate in various genome maintenance pathways, such as base and nucleotide excision repair, non-homologous end-joining, homologous recombination, and translesion synthesis. Polymerases catalyze DNA synthesis via the stepwise addition of deoxynucleoside monophosphates to the 3' primer end in a partially double-stranded DNA. They require divalent metal cations coordinated by active site residues of the polymerase...

BACKGROUND: Different fixation methods in anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) have been associated with different revision rates, specifically in the early postoperative period. However, most previous research has either grouped together different fixation types or evaluated femoral-sided fixation or tibial-sided fixation separately. The prognostic significance of obesity in sarcopenic adults is controversial. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to investigate the effect of additional obesity on health outcomes in sarcopenia. Soil invertebrates are among the least understood metazoans on Earth. Thus far, the lack of taxonomically broad and dense genomic resources has made it hard to thoroughly investigate their evolution and ecology. With MetaInvert we provide draft genome assemblies for 232 soil invertebrate species, representing 14 common groups and 94 families. We show that this data substantially extends the taxonomic scope of DNA- or RNA-based taxonomic identification. Moreover, we confirm that theories of genome evolution cannot be generalised across evolutionarily distinct invertebrate groups...

This combination of factors led to exhaustion, burnout, and moral injury. As a result, mental health practitioners worldwide realized that health care staff needed to stay motivated and resilient...
