Herpes zoster of trigeminal nerve was a common skin disease caused by varicella-zoster virus infection. Simple involvement of the third branch of trigeminal nerve was rare, and so were oral complications such as pulpitis, periodontitis, spontaneous tooth loss, bone necrosis, etc. This article presented a case of herpes zoster on the third branch of the left trigeminal nerve complicated with left mandibular osteonecrosis. We reported the case of a 64-year-old man with sudden pain in the left half of the tongue 1 month ago, and then herpes on the left facial skin appeared following with acute pain...

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of neuroendoscopy for treating hypertensive putamen hemorrhage (HPH), compared with traditional craniotomy. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 81 consecutive patients with HPH treated with neuroendoscopy (n=36) or craniotomy (n=45) in the Department of Neurosurgery at the Anhui Provincial Hospital Affiliated to Anhui Medical University between January 2015 and December 2017. We compared the clinical and radiographic outcomes, excluded 14 patients who did not meet the inclusion criteria...

The present paper provides a historical context for chaos theory, originating in the 1960s with Edward Norton Lorenz's efforts to predict weather patterns. It introduces chaos theory, fractal geometry, nonlinear dynamics, and the butterfly effect, highlighting their exploration of complex systems. The authors aim to bridge the gap between chaos theory and oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS) through a literature review, exploring its applications and emphasizing the prevention of minor deviations in OMFS to avoid significant consequences...

This study investigated the natural course of cemento-osseous dysplasia (COD) on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Retrospectively, 104 CBCT scans from 36 patients (mean age, 44.5 years; 33 female and three male) with mandibular COD (10 florid, seven focal, 19 periapical) were included, based upon clinico-radiological features, without complications such as infection and related surgery. Changes in maximum diameter and morphology (lytic, mixed lytic-sclerotic, sclerotic) were evaluated in 83 lesions, with a mean follow-up of 28...

BACKGROUND: Individuals with pre-existing chronic kidney disease (CKD) are at an increased risk of experiencing severe symptoms if infected with COVID-19. This report presents the case of a patient with CKD who contracted COVID-19 and subsequently experienced rapid deterioration of kidney function, hair loss, and spontaneous remission of facial warts. CASE PRESENTATION: A 60-year-old Chinese man with a decade-long history of abnormal serum creatinine (Scr) levels and recently heightened fatigue sought treatment...

Guillain Barre syndrome (GBS) following Varicella zoster is a rare presentation and has only been reported in a few cases around the world. Of the reported cases, the type of GBS is not specified in the majority, and where specified is of the acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (AIDP) type. We report a case of acute motor axonal neuropathy (AMAN) type GBS following herpes zoster in a 27-year-old male who presented with bilateral lower limb weakness and left sided lower motor neuron type facial nerve palsy a week after herpes zoster infection...

BACKGROUND: Herpes zoster (HZ) is one of the most common skin diseases caused by viruses. Facial HZ develops when the varicella-zoster virus affects the trigeminal nerve, and alveolar osteonecrosis is a rare complication. However, the exact pathogenesis of postherpetic alveolar osteonecrosis remains unclear. CASE DESCRIPTION: We encountered a patient who presented to the dermatology clinic with facial HZ and tooth exfoliation in the upper right jaw, and panoramic radiography revealed decreased bone density and poor alveolar socket healing in his right maxilla...

Guillain-Barré syndrome is a polyneuropathy that can be caused by an autoimmune condition or a bacterial infection. In typical GBS cases, there is hypo- or areflexia, symmetrical limb weakness that worsens within four weeks of the symptoms. The facial nerve is involved in this situation, which results in weak facial muscles, which, in turn, affect facial emotions and movements. In this case study, a 21-year-old athlete who suffered from unexpected weakness that resulted in quadriplegia had goal-oriented physical therapy treatment designed for the patient, who recovered quickly...

Xq28 int22h-1/int22h-2 duplication is the result of non-allelic homologous recombination between int22h-1/int22h-2 repeats separated by 0.5 Mb. It is responsible for a syndromic form of intellectual disability (ID), with recurrent infections and atopic diseases. Minor defects, nonspecific facial dysmorphic features, and overweight have also been described. Half of female carriers have been reported with ID, whereas all reported evaluated born males present mild to moderate ID, suggesting complete penetrance...

Mucormycosis is a potentially fatal condition with a high mortality rate, particularly when there is extra nasal involvement, and it is rare for patients with fungal brain disease to survive. It mostly affects patients who are metabolically or immunologically compromised, which constitutes one of the three classical stages of the progression of Rhino-Orbito-Cerebral Mucormycosis (ROCM). Stage I: infection of the nasal mucosa and paranasal sinuses; Stage II: orbital involvement; Stage III: cerebral involvement...

Despite most COVID-19 infections being asymptomatic, mainland China had a high increase in symptomatic cases at the end of 2022. In this study, we examine China's sudden COVID-19 symptomatic surge using a conceptual SIR-based model. Our model considers the epidemiological characteristics of SARS-CoV-2, particularly variolation , from non-pharmaceutical intervention (facial masking and social distance), demography, and disease mortality in mainland China. The increase in symptomatic proportions in China may be attributable to (1) higher sensitivity and vulnerability during winter and (2) enhanced viral inhalation due to spikes in SARS-CoV-2 infections (high transmissibility)...

Although rare, trans-kingdom infection features an interesting infection biology concept, in which highly versatile pathogenic attributes allow successful infections in evolutionarily highly divergent species. Corynespora cassiicola is a phytopathogenic fungus and occasionally causes human infections. Herein, we report a phaeohyphomycosis case caused by C . cassiicola . Given that sporadic reports may contribute to a lack of awareness of the transmission route, clinical manifestations, and diagnostic and clinical management, we systematically reviewed the cases reported thus far...

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is a rare acute-onset neurological disease with significant morbidity and mortality. The risk of GBS increases after delivery. Labor and delivery presents many possible risk factors for GBS. However, risk factors and prognosis of postpartum GBS remain unclear due to its low incidence. Here, we first present a patient with a history of postpartum GBS who returned for an elective repeat cesarean section (C-section). For her previous delivery, the patient received spinal anesthesia for an urgent C-section...

Following acute human alphaherpesvirus 1 (HSV-1) infection of oral-facial mucosal surfaces, sensory neurons in trigeminal ganglia (TG) are important sites for life-long latency. Neurons in the central nervous system, including brainstem, also harbor viral genomes during latency. Periodically, certain cellular stressors trigger reactivation from latency, which can lead to recurrent HSV-1 disease: herpes labialis, herpes stromal keratitis, and encephalitis for example. Activation of the glucocorticoid receptor (GR) by stressful stimuli enhances HSV-1 gene expression, replication, and explant-induced reactivation...
