BACKGROUND: The number of renal transplant recipients is rising, as well as graft and recipient survival. The mainstay of urological follow-up is to ensure urine transport and voiding function; also, the diagnosis and treatment of urological malignancies following renal transplantats is growing in importance. As urological malignancies are one of the three most common tumors following renal transplantation (RT), meticulous and regular urological evaluation is a central part of follow-up care after RT...

The present study assessed the influence of salinity and temperature on body growth and on muscle cellularity of Lophiosilurus alexaxdri vitelinic larvae. Slightly salted environments negatively influenced body growth of freshwater fish larvae and we observed that those conditions notably act as an environmental influencer on muscle growth and on local expression of hypertrophia and hypeplasia markers (IGFs and PCNA). Furthermore, we could see that salinity tolerance for NaCl 4gl(-)(1) diminishes with increasing temperature, evidenced by variation in body and muscle growth, and by irregular morphology of the lateral skeletal muscle of larvae...

Glucuronidation, mediated by the UDP-glucuronosyltransferase 1A1 (UGT1A1) enzyme, is an important metabolic process during which steroids are converted to more easily excreted compounds in steroid target tissues, such as the prostate. The aim of our study was to investigate the possible correlation between UGT1A1 promoter gene polymorphism and benign prostatic hyperplasia. 421 blood samples were obtained from 138 consecutive patients diagnosed with benign prostatic hypeplasia (BPH group) and 283 healthy volunteers (control group)...

Despite the high prevalence of histological Benign Prostatic Hypeplasia (BPH) in elderly men, little is known regarding the molecular mechanisms and networks underlying the development and progression of the disease. Here, we explored the effects of a phytotherapeutic agent, Lipidosterolic extract of the dwarf palm plant Serenoa repens (LSESr), on the mRNA gene expression profiles of two representative models of BPH, BPH1 cell line and primary stromal cells derived from BPH. Treatment of these cells with LSESr significantly altered gene expression patterns as assessed by comparative gene expression profiling on gene chip arrays...

OBJECTIVES: With the advent of medical management and minimally techniques for benign prostate hypeplasia (BPH), invasive surgical procedures such open prostatectomy (OPSU) have become less common, although selected patients may still benefit from open prostatectomy. Aim of this study was to evaluate efficacy and safety of Bipolar TURP (Gyrus electro surgical system) versus standard open prostatectomy in patients with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) due to bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) with markedly enlarged glands refractory to medical therapy...

Since 1977, we have operated on 18 nonfunctioning adrenal tumors. The pathological diagnosis included seven adrenocortical adenomas, three adrenocortical hypeplasias, three ganglioneuromas two adrenal cysts, two myelolipomas and one metastatic cancer. We successfully performed laparoscopic adrenalectomy in 11 of these patients and open surgery in the other 7 patients. In the patients undergoing laparoscopic adrenalectomy, post-operative recovery (fist oral intake, first ambulation, and total convalescence) was remarkably rapid...

Thirteen-week toxicity studies of the flame retardant 2,2-bis(bromomethyl)-1,3-propanediol (BMP; dibromoneopentyl glycol; FR-1138; CAS No. 329690-0) were conducted in male and female F344/N rats and B6C3F1 mice. The chemical was administered by oral gavage in corn oil 5 days per week for 13 weeks to rats at doses of 0, 50, 100, 200, 400, and 800 mg/kg and to mice at doses of 0, 25, 50, 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg, or in the feed for 13 weeks at concentrations of 0, 1250, 2500, 5000, 10,000, and 20,000 ppm for rats and at 0, 625, 1250, 2500, 5000, and 10,000 ppm for mice...
