Peracetic acid (PAA) has emerged as a new effective oxidant for various contaminants degradation through advanced oxidation process (AOP). In this study, sulfidated nano zero-valent iron-copper (S-nZVIC) with low Cu doping and sulfidation was synthesized for PAA activation, resulting in more efficient degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX, 20 μM) and other contaminants using a low dose of catalyst (0.05 g/L) and oxidant (100 μM). The characterization results suggested that S-nZVIC presented a more uniform size and distribution with fewer metal oxides, as the agglomeration and oxidation were inhibited...

Ewald sphere curvature correction, which extends beyond the projection approximation, stretches the shallow depth of field in cryo-EM reconstructions of thick particles. Here we show that even for previously assumed thin particles, reconstruction artifacts which we refer to as ghosts can appear. By retrieving the lost phases of the electron exitwaves and accounting for the first Born approximation scattering within the particle, we show that these ghosts can be effectively eliminated. Our simulations demonstrate how such ghostbusting can improve reconstructions as compared to existing state-of-the-art software...

INTRODUCTION: Studies have reached mixed conclusions on the role of antiplatelet and anticoagulant agents on postoperative complications of partial nephrectomies. This study examines whether preoperative anticoagulation use affected the risk of hemorrhagic complications after partial nephrectomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective chart review of all partial nephrectomies performed between 2017 and 2022 at a single institution. For each operation, preoperative data was gathered on whether the patient was on anticoagulation, the type and dose of anticoagulation, and how many days the anticoagulation was held preoperatively...

Insomnia symptoms have been shown to be associated with suicide ideation/behavior. However, the underlying mechanism is unclear and studies on protective factors that might mitigate the association between sleep-related problems and suicide ideation/behavior are largely missing. On this background the aim of the current study was to investigate, whether positive mental health (PMH) accounts for the association between insomnia symptoms and suicidal ideation/behavior. A total of 913 participants (72.2% women; age: M(SD) = 25...

Background and aims Problematic Social Network Sites Use (PSNSU) mirrors substance use disorders with regard to symptoms (e.g., diminished control). Recent theoretical advances in the addiction research field recognize a central role of affective and cognitive processes in the development of addictive behaviors. For example, the metacognitive model of addictive behaviors sustains that cognitive processes like extended thinking, disruption in metacognitive monitoring, and thought suppression are associated with addictive behaviors leading to increased craving...

BACKGROUND: U.S.-focused studies have reported decreasing dementia prevalence in recent decades, but have not yet focused on the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic for trends. METHODS: We use the 2011-2021 National Health and Aging Trends Study (N=48,065) to examine dementia prevalence, incidence and mortality trends among adults ages 72 and older, and the contribution to prevalence trends of changes in the distribution of characteristics of the older population ("compositional shifts") during the full and pre-pandemic periods...

OBJECTIVES: Remembering past rewarding experiences plays a crucial rule in guiding people's decision-making in the future. However, as people age, they become less accurate in remembering past events and more susceptible to forming false memories. An important question is how the decline of episodic memory and increase of false memory may impact older adults' decision-making performance. METHOD: The current study used a newly developed paradigm in which the Deese-Roediger-McDermott false memory paradigm was combined with a reward learning task to create robust false memories of rewarding experiences...

Four years later, the developed restorative composite resin ended up as a radiopaque, optically translucent, universal color with an additional three shades that possessed the biologic, esthetic, mechanical and physical characteristics with proven efficacy be used for esthetic zone...

OBJECTIVE: Twin pregnancies are at an increased risk of stillbirth compared to singletons. Fetal growth restriction (FGR) is a leading cause of perinatal mortality and morbidity, in both singleton and multiple pregnancies. Whether the contribution of FGR to stillbirth in twin pregnancies differs from that in singletons is yet to be determined. The main aim of this study was to determine the association between FGR and stillbirth in twin compared to singleton pregnancies. The secondary objectives include an assessment of the contribution of FGR to stillbirths, stratified by gestational age at delivery...

Bone is highly susceptible to cancer metastasis, and both tumor and bone cells enable tumor invasion through a "vicious cycle" of biochemical signaling. Tumor metastasis into bone also alters biophysical cues to both tumor and bone cells, which are highly sensitive to their mechanical environment. However, the mechanobiological feedback between these cells that perpetuate this cycle has not been studied. Here, we develop highly advanced in vitro and computational models to provide an advanced understanding of how tumor growth is regulated by the synergistic influence of tumor-bone cell signaling and mechanobiological cues...

Parkinson's disease is one of the most common neurodegenerative disorders characterized by a multitude of motor and non-motor clinical symptoms resulting from the progressive and long-lasting abnormal loss of nigrostriatal dopaminergic neurons. Currently, the available treatments for patients with Parkinson's disease are limited and exert only symptomatic effects, without adequate signs of delaying or stopping the progression of the disease.
