Using data from the D.C. Cohort Longitudinal HIV Study, we examined (a) diagnosed mental health and (b) cardiovascular, pulmonary, or cancer (CPC) comorbidity among adults with HIV who smoked. Among 8,581 adults, 4,273 (50%) smoked; 49% of smokers had mental health, and 13% of smokers had a CPC comorbidity. Among smokers, non-Hispanic Black participants had a lower risk for mental health (prevalence ratio [PR]: 0.69; 95% confidence interval [CI] [0.62-0.76]) but a higher risk for CPC (PR: 1.17; 95% CI [0.84-1...

Ischemic stroke (IS) is a detrimental neurological disease with limited treatment options. Astragaloside IV (As-IV) was a promising bioactive constituent in the treatment of IS. However, the functional mechanism remains unclear. Here, IS cell and mouse models were established by oxygen glucose deprivation/re-oxygenation (OGD/R) and middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). Quantitative reverse transcription PCR (RT-qPCR), Western blotting, or Immunofluorescence staining measured related gene and protein expression of cells or mice brain tissues, and the results revealed altered expression of acyl-CoA synthetase long-chain family member 4 (Acsl4), fat mass and obesity-associated (Fto), and activation transcription factor 3 (Atf3) after treatment with As-IV...

BACKGROUND: Uncontrolled blood pressure is an important medical and public health problem in developing countries like Ethiopia. Improving the management of hypertension requires a better comprehension of the factors influencing blood pressure control and the application of interventions. But in clinical practice, blood pressure is still not adequately controlled. Thus, this study aimed to assess uncontrolled blood pressure and associated among adult hypertensive patients on follow-up at public health facility ambulatory clinics in Bishoftu, Ethiopia...

Neddylation is a cellular process in which the neural precursor cell expressed, developmentally down-regulated 8 (NEDD8) is conjugated to the lysine residue of target proteins via serial enzymatic cascades. Recently, it has been demonstrated that neddylation is required for synaptic clustering of metabotropic glutamate receptor 7 (mGlu7) and postsynaptic density protein 95 (PSD-95), and the inhibition of neddylation impairs neurite outgrowth and excitatory synaptic maturation. Similar to the balanced role of deubiquitylating enzymes (DUBs) in the ubiquitination process, we hypothesized that deneddylating enzymes can regulate neuronal development by counteracting the process of neddylation...

Spreading depolarization (SD) is assumed to be the pathophysiological correlate of migraine aura, leading to spreading depression of activity and a long-lasting vasoconstriction known as spreading oligemia. Further, cerebrovascular reactivity is reversibly impaired after SD. Here, we explored the progressive restoration of impaired neurovascular coupling to somatosensory activation during spreading oligemia. Also, we evaluated whether nimodipine treatment accelerated the recovery of impaired neurovascular coupling after SD...

Nociplastic pain is a severe health problem, while its mechanisms are still unclear. (R, S)-3,5-Dihydroxyphenylglycine (DHPG) is a group I metabotropic glutamate receptor (mGluR) agonist that can cause central sensitization, which plays a role in nociplastic pain. In this study, after intrathecal injection of 25 nmol DHPG for three consecutive days, whole proteins were extracted from the L4~6 lumbar spinal cord of mice 2 h after intrathecal administration on the third day for proteomics analysis...

Although hypertension is highly prevalent in older adults, treatment goals require both an understanding of the various guidelines available, as well as appreciation of the unique medical, cognitive, psychosocial, and functional heterogeneity of our individual geriatric patients that may place them outside those guidelines. As a patient's clinical status changes over time, clinicians may consider deprescribing their blood pressure medications when their risks begin to outweigh their benefits. Unique clinical circumstances and incorporating the time to benefit of hypertension control help guide clinical decision-making...

The objective of the study was to evaluate systolic (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) pattern in COVID-19 patients discharged from the hospital and followed for over 3 months. DESIGN AND METHOD: This is a prospective single-center observational cohort study of 1442 hospitalized COVID-19 patients including 259 ICU patients followed over 3-months (52...

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) uptake and adherence among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) may be negatively influenced by poor interactions with health care providers. We assessed PrEP counseling using unannounced standardized patient actors (USPs) at routine care clinics in Kenya. Trained actors posed as AGYW seeking PrEP services following case scripts and completed a checklist of provider adherence to national guidelines and communication skills. Scores were converted into a percentage and compared using linear regression...

BACKGROUND: Post-market analyses revealed unanticipated links between first-generation Bruton's tyrosine kinase inhibitor (BTKi) therapy, ibrutinib, and profound early hypertension. Yet, whether this is seen with novel selective second (next)-generation BTKi therapy, acalabrutinib, is unknown. METHODS: Leveraging a large cohort of consecutive B cell cancer patients treated with acalabrutinib from 2014 to 2020, we assessed the incidence and ramifications of new or worsened hypertension [systolic blood pressure (SBP) ≥ 130 mmHg] after acalabrutinib initiation...

BACKGROUND: To explore the prevalence, pharmacologic treatment, and control of hypertension among US non-pregnant women of reproductive age by race/Hispanic origin to identify potential gaps in care. Our analytic sample included 4,590 non-pregnant women aged 20-44 years who had at least one examiner-measured blood pressure (BP) value. Hypertension is one of the leading causes of the global burden of disease. Screening for microalbuminuria is a sensitive, reliable and accessible test for renal disease and CV morbidity or mortality in hypertension. Reducing SBP but not DBP leads to a decrease in microalbuminuria. Therefore this study is intended to study the association of blood lipid level and urine microalbumin in hypertensive individuals in patients examined in Mandya Institute of Medical Science. Material and Objectives: To study the correlation of microalbuminuria and lipid profile in hypertensive patients...

Background: Hypertension is the most common modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular diseases in South Asia. Machine learning (ML) models have been shown to outperform clinical risk predictions compared to statistical methods, but studies using ML to predict hypertension at the population level are lacking. Methods: We conducted a retrospective study using ML analyses to detect hypertension using population-based surveys...

BACKGROUND: Dorsal Root Ganglia (DRG) neurons are derived from the neural crest and mainly innervate the skin, while Jugular Nodose Complex (JNC) neurons originate from the placode and innervate internal organs. These ganglia are composed of highly heterogeneous groups of neurons aimed at assessing and preserving homeostasis. Among other subtypes, nociceptor neurons are specialized in sensing and responding to environmental dangers. As form typically follows function, we hypothesized that JNC and DRG neurons would be phenotypically and transcriptomically different...
