Seeded semiconductor nanorods represent a unique family of quantum confined materials that manifest characteristics of mixed dimensionality. They show polarized emission with high quantum yield and fluorescence switching under an electric field, features that are desirable for use in display technologies and other optical applications. So far, their robust synthesis has been limited mainly to CdSe/CdS heterostructures, thereby constraining the spectral tunability to the red region of the visible spectrum. Herein we present a novel synthesis of CdSe/Cd1-xZnxS seeded nanorods with radially graded composition that show bright and highly polarized green emission with minimal intermittency, as confirmed by ensemble and single nanorods optical measurements...

Electronic states are responsible for most material properties, including chemical bonds, electrical and thermal conductivity, as well as optical and magnetic properties. Experimentally, however, they remain mostly elusive. Here, we report the real-space mapping of selected transitions between p and d states on the Ångström scale in bulk rutile (TiO2) using electron energy-loss spectrometry (EELS), revealing information on individual bonds between atoms. On the one hand, this enables the experimental verification of theoretical predictions about electronic states...

BACKGROUND: Measurement of tooth enamel mineralization using a clinically viable method is essential since variation of mineralization may be used to monitor caries risk or in assessing the effectiveness of remineralization therapy. Fiber optic Raman systems are becoming more affordable and popular in context of biomedical applications. However, the applicability of fiber optic Raman systems for measurement of mineral content within enamel tissue has not been elucidated significantly in the prior literature...

BACKGROUND: Haemodynamic performance of heart valve prosthesis can be defined as its ability to fully open and completely close during the cardiac cycle, neither overloading heart work nor damaging blood particles when passing through the valve. In this perspective, global and local flow parameters, valve dynamics and blood damage safety of the prosthesis, as well as their mutual interactions, have all to be accounted for when assessing the device functionality. Even though all these issues have been and continue to be widely investigated, they are not usually studied through an integrated approach yet, i...

We consider the network of citations of scientific papers and use a combination of the theoretical and experimental tools to uncover microscopic details of this network growth. Namely, we develop a stochastic model of citation dynamics based on the copying-redirection-triadic closure mechanism. In a complementary and coherent way, the model accounts both for statistics of references of scientific papers and for their citation dynamics. Originating in empirical measurements, the model is cast in such a way that it can be verified quantitatively in every aspect...

BACKGROUND: We sought to evaluate and validate the 8th edition of the AJCC classification using a multi-institutional cohort of patients with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC). METHODS: Patients undergoing curative-intent hepatic resection for ICC between 1990 and 2015 at 14 major hepatobiliary centers were included and were staged according to 7th and 8th editions AJCC criteria. RESULTS: A total of 1154 patients underwent liver resection for ICC...

OBJECTIVES: The management of incidentally detected gallbladder polyps on radiological examinations is contentious. The incidental radiological finding of a gallbladder polyp can therefore be problematic for the radiologist and the clinician who referred the patient for the radiological examination. To address this a joint guideline was created by the European Society of Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Radiology (ESGAR), European Association for Endoscopic Surgery and other Interventional Techniques (EAES), International Society of Digestive Surgery - European Federation (EFISDS) and European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE)...

The quantification of pulse energy during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) post-oxygenator is required prior to the evaluation of the possible beneficial effects of pulsatile flow on patient outcome. We therefore, evaluated the impact of three distinctive oxygenators on the energy indicators energy equivalent pressure (EEP) and surplus hemodynamic energy (SHE) in an adult CPB model under both pulsatile and laminar flow conditions. The pre- and post-oxygenator pressure and flow were measured at room temperature using a 40% glycerin-water mixture at flow rates of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 L/min...

We analyze the definition of the Gibbs free energy of a nanoparticle in a reactive fluid environment, and propose an approach for predicting the size of carbon nanoparticles produced by the detonation of carbon-rich explosives that regards their condensation as a nucleation process and takes into account absolute entropy effects of the cluster population. The results are consistent with experimental observations and indicate that such entropy considerations are important for determining chemical equilibrium states in energetic materials that contain an excess of carbon...

Providing and receiving informed consent to critically ill or moribund subjects is ethically and practically challenging.(1) Historically the concept of autonomy requires research subjects to receive and provide informed consent prior to participating in clinical research. The nature of resuscitation research prevents two-way communication and ethical informed consent. In 1996 the FDA released a set of guidelines allowing for exception from informed consent (EFIC) for emergency research, provided certain requirements are met (21 CF 50...

AIMS: Detection of podocytes in the urine of patients with type 2 diabetes may indicate severe injury to the podocytes. In the course of type 2 diabetes the proximal tubule is involved in urinary albumin processing. We studied the significance of podocyturia in relation with proximal tubule dysfunction in type 2 diabetes. METHODS: A total of 86 patients with type 2 diabetes (34-normoalbuminuria; 30-microalbuminuria; 22-macroalbuminuria) and 28 healthy subjects were enrolled in the study and assessed concerning urinary podocytes, podocyte-associated molecules, and biomarkers of proximal tubule dysfunction...

: 76 Background: The intensive care unit (ICU) is associated with high mortality rates, significant costs, along with occasionally futile and non-indicated care. Surveys of patients indicate the majority wish to focus on comfort and being at home at the end of life as opposed to the aggressive interventions received in the hospital. Although a small percentage of patients may be awake, medical teams look to the families to provide the direction of care for a patient in the ICU. City of Hope National Medical Center has utilized tablet-based screening of caregivers for years, and now in conjunction with delirium screening has started to roll out tablet-based screening for patients who are awake and do not have delirium...

The objective of this investigation was to compare alternative framework designs of molar zirconia crowns veneered with various overpressing ceramics and to predict the biomechanical behavior based on the stress evaluation. The hypothesis of the study is that the zirconia framework design and type of the veneering material, using the same technological procedure, may influence the biomechanical behavior of the restorations. Three geometric models with differential coping designs (uniform thickness, cutback and buccal reduction) were developed and two types of hot-pressed ceramics (leucite and lithium disilicate reinforced) were analyzed for the veneers...

To assess the value of cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) in evaluating cardiac tumours in a tertiary cardiology centre. Between 2004 and 2014, 125 patients (pts.) from a total of 17000 who received a CMR examination in our institution were referred with the suspicion of cardiac tumours. A dedicated protocol was used that included standard cine SSFP acquisitions as well as tissue characterization using T1 and T2 black-blood (T1 BB and T2 BB respectively) with and without fat suppression, perfusion of the structure and late gadolinium enhancement...

Massive all-atom molecular dynamics simulations were conducted across a distributed computing network to study the folding, unfolding, misfolding and conformational plasticity of the high-efficiency frameshifting double mutant of the 26 nt potato leaf roll virus RNA pseudoknot. Our robust sampling, which included over 40 starting structures spanning the spectrum from the extended unfolded state to the native fold, yielded nearly 120 μs of cumulative sampling time. Conformational microstate transitions on the 1...
