The study aims to investigate the effect of argan oil on plasma lipid concentrations through a systematic review of the literature and a meta-analysis of available randomized controlled trials. Randomized controlled trials that investigated the impact of at least 2 weeks of supplementation with argan oil on plasma/serum concentrations of at least 1 of the main lipid parameters were eligible for inclusion. Effect size was expressed as the weighted mean difference (WMD) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI). Meta-analysis of data from 5 eligible trials with 292 participants showed a significant reduction in plasma concentrations of total cholesterol (WMD: -16...

The present study aims to evaluate the potential uses of hydroalcoholic extracts obtained from Romanian native wild-growing plants. The hydroalcoholic extracts were obtained from the burdock roots and respectively the aerial parts of birdeye speedwell. The extracts were characterised by HPLC (quantifying 13 compounds in the V. persica extract, 6 compounds in the A. lappa extract and confirming the presence of arctiin and arctigenin in the burdock extract). The antioxidant potential of the crude extracts was evaluated using two methods: the DPPH assay (79...

A beam element is constructed for microtubules based upon data reduction of the results from atomistic simulation of the carbon backbone chain of αβ-tubulin dimers. The data base of mechanical responses to various types of loads from atomistic simulation is reduced to dominant modes. The dominant modes are subsequently used to construct the stiffness matrix of a beam element that captures the anisotropic behavior and deformation mode coupling that arises from a microtubule's spiral structure. In contrast to standard Euler-Bernoulli or Timoshenko beam elements, the link between forces and node displacements results not from hypothesized deformation behavior, but directly from the data obtained by molecular scale simulation...

Myocardial bridging, a congenital abnormality in which a coronary artery tunnels through the myocardial fibres was usually considered a benign condition. Many studies suggested a potential hemodynamic significance of myocardial bridging and some, usually case reports, implied a possible correlation between it and various cardiovascular pathologies like acute myocardial infarction, ventricular rupture, life-threatening arrhythmias, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, apical ballooning syndrome or sudden death. The main objective of this article is to evaluate whether myocardial bridging may be associated with significant cardiac effects or if it is strictly a benign anatomical variation...

BACKGROUND: An alarming rate of early failure has been recently reported for the LivaNova (previously Sorin) Mitroflow (LivaNova, London, UK) bioprosthesis. Here, we aimed at verifying if this possible underperformance is confirmed in a large, single-center experience and identifying the risk factors associated with early deterioration. METHODS: In all, 459 Mitroflow valves have been implanted from July 2009 to December 2013 (patients' mean age 73 years; 204 women)...

Advances in high-throughput technologies allow for measurements of many types of omics data, yet the meaningful integration of several different data types remains a significant challenge. Another important and difficult problem is the discovery of molecular disease subtypes characterized by relevant clinical differences, such as survival. Here we present a novel approach, called Perturbation clustering for data INtegration and disease Subtyping (PINS), which is able to address both challenges. The framework has been validated on thousands of cancer samples, using gene expression, DNA methylation, non-coding microRNA, and copy number variation data available from the Gene Expression Omnibus, the Broad Institute, The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), and the European Genome-Phenome Archive...

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to review the institutional practice of surveillance transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) for diagnosing early prosthetic valve dysfunction (PVD). BACKGROUND: Bioprosthetic valve thrombosis (BPVT) is an important cause of PVD, and guidelines do not recommend routine TTE during the first 5 years after valve implantation. METHODS: The authors performed a retrospective case-control study of all suspected (imaging diagnosis) or confirmed (histopathological diagnosis) cases of BPVT from January 1997 through December 2016...

The main objective of this article was to analyze prevalence data about myocardial bridging (MB) in published studies. To this purpose, we performed a meta-analysis of studies published in English literature that contained data about the prevalence of MB and its anatomical characteristics. The overall prevalence was 19% (CI: 17-21%); autopsy studies revealed an overall prevalence of 42% (CI: 30-55%), CT studies 22% (CI: 18-25%), and coronary angiography 6% (CI: 5-8%). Most bridges were located on the left anterior descending artery (82% overall, 63% on autopsy studies), had a mean thickness of 2...

Mast cell leukemia is an extremely rare disease, which belongs to the systemic mastocytosis group (WHO 2016). We are reporting the case of a 79-year-old woman, without any hematological particular history consulting for hyperthermia, repeated malaise and subacute anemia. Her clinical examination was normal. Unusual cells were seen on blood and bone marrow smears. They represent more than 10% of blood nucleated cells end more than 20% of the bone marrow nucleated cells. Bone marrow immunophenotyping was performed to characterize these cells...

The aminofluoroalcohol N,N,N-(CH2[double bond, length as m-dash]CHCH2CH2-),(CH3OCH2CH2-),(HOC(CF3)2CH2-)N ({RO(F)}H) possessing both a methoxy and an olefin dangling side arms enables the preparation of the heteroleptic charge neutral alkaline earth complexes [{μ(2)-RO(F)}AeN(SiMe2H)2]2 (Ae = Ca, 1; Sr, 2). These O-bridged dinuclear complexes were characterised by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction crystallography. XRD analysis of 1 and 2 showed that both complexes are stabilised by intramolecular AeF-C and β-agostic AeH-Si secondary interactions, and that the olefin does not bind to the alkaline earths while the methoxy side-arm does...

Sugammadex, a modified gamma-cyclodextrin, has changed clinical practice of neuromuscular reversal dramatically. With the introduction of this selective relaxant binding agent, rapid and reliable neuromuscular reversal from any depth of block became possible. Sugammadex can reverse neuromuscular blockade without the muscarinic side effects typically associated with the administration of acetylcholinesterase inhibitors. However, what remained unchanged is the incidence of residual neuromuscular blockade. It is known that sugammadex cannot always prevent its occurrence, if appropriate dosing is not chosen based on the level of neuromuscular paralysis prior to administration determined by objective neuromuscular monitoring...

Suboptimal birth characteristics have been associated with altered reactivity to stress in infants. However, previous studies have not controlled for mode of delivery, which may influence the neonatal onset of stress responses. The present study assessed stress-related behavior and salivary cortisol before and after an inoculation at two hours after birth, and compared infants born through VD (N=70) and elective CS (N=72). The results indicated that overall stress behavior and body movements were increased immediately after inoculation in infants born through CS compared to VD...
