Periodic Fever, Aphthous Ulcers, Pharyngitis and Adenitis (PFAPA) Syndrome's etiology is not well understood. The objective of this study is to explore the association between vitamin D level and PFAPA syndrome. A systematic review of all publications addressing the association between vitamin D level and PFAPA syndrome prior to May 2019 was conducted. Data were collected from online medical databases namely, PubMed, Ovid Medline, Embase, Cochrane Library, Google Scholar, and Scopus. The review adhered to the PRISMA statement and was performed in 3 main phases; an initial screening review of abstracts was performed, followed by a detailed review of full articles based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, and lastly a final review to extract data from selected articles...

The reemergence of the monkeypox (MPX) virus poses a serious threat to global health security. While the first human case was reported in Democratic Republic of Congo in 1970, a recent outbreak of this disease in May 2022 has gone 'viral,' spreading to most continents and occurring in nonendemic countries. Outside Africa, there have been reports of cases of MPX in countries such as Singapore in May 2019, Israel in September 2018, UK in September 2018, among others which have been traced back to importation of infected wild rodents from Africa...

BACKGROUND: There is growing evidence identifying coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) as a significant risk factor for thrombosis in inpatients. However, it remains uncertain if patients in the community have been influenced during the COVID-19 pandemic and national lockdown. This study, across four centres in the United Kingdom (UK), reviewed outpatients with deep vein thrombosis (DVT). AIM: This study aims to find out whether lockdown and COVID-19 led to a change in the characteristics of DVT and patients who are afflicted with it, alongside a review of DVT service...

BACKGROUND: Closure of large anterior abdominal wall defects, regardless of their etiology, is challenging. There is no standardized information describing definitive management. Therefore, we conducted this study to illustrate our experience on large midline abdominal wall defect repair using an effective modified reconstructive technique. METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted at Al Naqib Hospital in Aden/Yemen between 2012 and 2019. Twenty-six patients with large midline abdominal wall defects of various etiologies underwent surgical repair using a combination of shoelace repair and the component separation technique...

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the clinical factors associated with the outcome of tonsillectomy in children with periodic fever, aphthous stomatitis, pharyngitis, and cervical adenitis (PFAPA) syndrome, thereby clarifying who would most likely benefit from that surgery. METHODS: This was a case-control study of 53 PFAPA patients who underwent tonsillectomy and were divided into a complete-resolution group and a postoperative-fever group. Logistic regression analyses were performed using 17 clinical factors as variables to identify factors associated with the surgical outcome...

BACKGROUND: Nontuberculosis mycobacterium (NTM) is the emerging group of organisms being recognized as etiological agents for diverse clinical conditions such as lymphadenitis, cutaneous, and pulmonary or disseminated lesions. Diverse background patients can acquire these infections such as immunocompetent, immunocompromised patients, or postoperative settings. Rapid addition of newer strains to this group necessitates heightened suspicion in the clinical settings. Specific requirements for cultures, biochemical testing, and molecular methods are needed to diagnose these organisms...

Histoplasma capsulatum , an endemic mycosis in the United States, can result in a variety of clinical manifestations. When encountering histoplasmosis sequelae, such as mediastinal adenitis, granulomas, and fibrosing mediastinitis, surgical management may be an unexpected but necessary treatment. Due to the complexity of the mediastinum, it is imperative to have optimal operative planning. In this report, we present an unusual case of an inflammatory mediastinal mass in the setting of acute histoplasmosis resulting in left atrium compression and arrhythmias...

Periodic fever, aphthous stomatitis, pharyngitis, adenitis (PFAPA) syndrome is one of the most common autoinflammatory fever disorders in the childhood which may co-exists with familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) causing treatment complexity. As the role of surgery in PFAPA syndrome is still controversial, in this paper, our aim is to present our results of tonsillectomy/adenotonsillectomy in the treatment of PFAPA syndrome. Archives of a tertiary care hospital were investigated for patients who underwent tonsillectomy or adenotonsillectomy due to PFAPA Syndrome between 2010 and 2020...

INTRODUCTION: Maximizing patient satisfaction is now a significant focus in many outpatient orthopedic clinics as it has been shown to affect many facets of healthcare. With this quality improvement study, we sought to determine the areas of the longest patient wait time during their clinical encounter and evaluate the effect of an identification card system on those times. We hypothesized that utilizing an identification card system would expedite the time patients spend in the clinic and decrease wait times...

Tubercular infection of the parotid gland often confuses clinicians, it being a rare entity even in an endemic area. Its similarity in presentation with that of parotid neoplasms, nonspecific symptoms, low incidence and non-contributory radiological findings often leads to its misdiagnosis as parotid neoplasm, which in the due course results in parotidectomy. Therefore, FNAC of parotid swelling is helpful to avoid unnecessary surgery and patient discomfort. We report four cases of FNAC of parotid swelling with suspicion of neoplasm/inflammatory lesion and were diagnosed as tuberculosis of the parotid gland...

OBJECTIVE: To compare the incidence of glottic stenosis in idiopathic subglottic stenosis (iSGS) patients with no prior surgical intervention to those with a history of endoscopic dilation and characterize the incidence of glottic involvement, changes in scar length, and progression of scar toward glottis following laser wedge excision (LWE). METHODS: A retrospective review of iSGS patients who underwent LWE between 2002 and 2021 was performed. Patients without prior airway surgery were labeled LWE primary (LWEP) and operative findings for LWEP patients were reviewed for glottic involvement, scar length (DL ), and distance from the glottis to superior-most aspect of scar (DGS )...

Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) may develop as a rare complication following COVID-19. MIS-C presentation varies substantially, but fever and gastrointestinal symptoms are the most prominent. Indeed, gastrointestinal involvement may be severe enough to present as acute abdomen, posing challenges to clinicians. We present herein the case of a healthy five-year-old male who presented with fever, vomiting, and abdominal pain, resembling acute abdomen. The patient had no history of SARS-CoV-2 infection or exposure, and MIS-C diagnosis was initially surpassed unnoticed...
