OBJECTIVE: The evaluation of the RNA content in reticulocytes by means of flow cytometry allows us to differentiate three reticulocyte populations by their degree of maturity: LFR, MFR and HFR. We have studied the value of those reticulocyte subpopulations for the differential diagnosis in polycythemia. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We have studied 25 polycythemia patients, 12 of these were diagnosed of polycythemia vera (PV) and 13 of secondary polycythemia (PS). Reticulocytes and their different reticulocyte populations were automatically analyzed by flow cytometry using the Sysmex R-2000 analyzer (TOA Corp...

BACKGROUND: Fertile-aged women are a population group at special risk for developing ferropenia. In the periodic health care examinations, hemogram, among other tests, are included to detect the most advanced state of iron deficity, ferropenic anemia. Likewise, preanemic ferropenia presents a certain morbidity. The aim of this study was to analyze the cost-effectiveness of screening serum ferritin determination in health care examinations of fertile-aged women. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: An observational transversal study was carried out in 322 women in whom hemogram and serum ferritin were determined...

PURPOSE: To evaluate blood donation as a cause of iron deficiency. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Serum ferritin levels were determined by enzymoimmunoassay with an SRItm autoanalyser in 500 blood donors of both sexes chosen at random and in 200 suitors for blood donation, used as control group. Iron deficiency was defined by ferritin values below 15 ng/dL. Age, sex, total number of blood donations and those carried out in the last year were all correlated for the statistical analysis, performed with the SPSS/PC+ pack...

Twenty-three hemodialysis patients exposed to an accidental aluminum overload, showed increased erythropoietin requirements and decreased erythrocyte mean corpuscular volume (MCV). At the peak of the intoxication, MCV and plasma aluminum levels changed from unrelated (r = 0.02) to strongly related (r = 0.425) variables. The molar proportion of plasma aluminum to plasma iron increased dramatically (from 1:13.8 to 1:2.4). This significant increment in the aluminum/iron ratio made higher the relative offer of aluminum with respect to iron to the erythroid precursor cells...

The ferropenic, is an important disturbance in the childhood due to its frequency, and the necessity of a permanent increase of iron at this age, other factors can be added, such as the iron demand and hemorrhagic loss in puberty. We studied 214 rural school children, between 4 and 16 years in Tenerife, among who two girls, 13 and 14 years old, and one boy 11 years old showed clear ferropenic (1.4%). Another four (1.8%) 3 girls with 14.14 and 9 years, and one boy with 7 years showed latent ferropenic. Overall the ferropenic incidence was 3...

UNLABELLED: The records of the last three years from the Hematology service are reviewed and twenty patients (6.23%) fulfilling the inclusion criteria were chosen out of a total of 316. RESULTS: pallor and malaise 100%, change in bowel movements 75%, nausea, vomiting and hemorrhage 40%, jaundice 25%, nausea aroused by food 20%, infection 10%. Severe hyporegenerative anemia 100%, thrombocytopenia 75%, pancytopenia 60%. We found as associated conditions: gynecological and obstetric history 25%, enteric and peritoneal tuberculosis 15%, and without an apparent cause (primary) 40%...

We report the case of a 13-yr-old patient with retarded growth and a 2-yr background of asthenia, anorexia, and fever, whose laboratory data revealed anemia, thrombocytosis, an elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate, ferropenia, hyperglobulinemia, hyperfibrinogenemia, and presence of a lupus-like circulating anticoagulant. Clinical studies revealed a tumor-like overgrowth in the gastric wall, and surgery confirmed its subserosal localization in the gastric fundus. After total removal of the mass, the systemic manifestations disappeared...

There are few studies addressing the frequency and etiology of anemia in progressive systemic sclerosis. Anemia is present in about 25% of these patients. Among the implicated causes are ferropenia, generally associated with gastrointestinal hemorrhage, and renal failure. In a considerable number of patients, the specific etiology of anemia remained unknown. We report a 59-year-old female with autoimmune hemolytic anemia and incomplete CREST syndrome. We emphasize the rarity of autoimmune hemolysis as a cause of anemia in systemic sclerosis, and we discuss its significance as indirectly supporting the possible autoimmune pathogenesis of that condition...

The purpose of this study was to calculate the predictive value (PV) of blue sclera (BS) in iron deficiency in women. The presence of this clinical sign was evaluated in 498 female patients at an urban primary care centre. Three observers independently evaluated the existence of BS on a scale of 0 to 3 in all female patients visited over a period of 35 weeks. Twenty eight cases of BS were detected over this period, of which 16 had ferropenia and 21 had anemia or iron deficiency. The positive predictive value of the clinical sign was 57...

Serum concentration of ferritin (Ft) and its glycosylated fraction (Ft-Gl) and intraerythrocytic ferritin (Ft-e) concentration were measured in 26 patients with anemia and active rheumatoid arthritis. Patients were divided into 2 groups according to the presence of anemia of chronic diseases (n = 13) or associated ferropenia. Unlike the first group, patients with associated ferropenia had lower concentration of the above parameters than 31 control subjects. The logarithmic value of FT (log FT) directly correlated with globular sedimentation velocity...
