C-arm cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) acquisition during endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) is an emergent technology with more and more applications. It offers real time imaging with a stationary patient and provides 3-D information to achieve guidance of intervention. However, there is growing concern on the overall radiation doses delivered to patients all along the endovascular management due to pre-, intra-, and post-operative X-ray imaging. Manufactures may have their low dose protocols to realize reduction of radiation dose, but CBCT with a low dose protocol has too many artifacts, particularly streak artifacts, and decreased contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR)...

In fission yeast, the formation of centromeric heterochromatin is induced through the RNA interference (RNAi)-mediated pathway. Some pre-mRNA splicing mutants (prp) exhibit defective formation of centromeric heterochromatin, suggesting that splicing factors play roles in the formation of heterochromatin, or alternatively that the defect is caused by impaired splicing of pre-mRNAs encoding RNAi factors. Herein, we demonstrate that the splicing factor spPrp16p is enriched at the centromere, and associates with Cid12p (a factor in the RNAi pathway) and the intron-containing dg ncRNA...

Short-term very low energy diets (VLED) are used in clinical practice prior to bariatric surgery, however, regimens vary and outcomes for a short intervention are unclear. We examined the effect of two VLEDs; a food-based diet (FD) and meal replacement plan (MRP) (LighterLife) over two weeks in a randomised controlled trial (RCT). We collected clinical and anthropometric data, fasting blood samples, and dietary evaluation questionnaires. Surgeons took liver biopsies and made a visual assessment of the liver...

We report on the low-temperature fabrication of field-effect transistors by bridging pre-patterned electrodes using ZnO nanowires grown in situ, which operate without requiring post-growth processing or annealing. The devices show good performance using as-grown nanowires, with on-off ratios of 10(5) and threshold voltages of 2 V. Electron microscopy shows the field-dependent nanowires hierarchically nucleate from larger ZnO nanorods, and both are oriented along a common c-axis. A high nanowire surface-to-volume ratio allows depleting electron traps on the nanowire surface to compensate intrinsic electron donors present throughout the nanowire bulk...

INTRODUCTION: Kidney transplantation (KT) is the preferred treatment for patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). To reduce the morbidity of the open surgery, a robotic-assisted approach has been recently introduced. Our aim is to evaluate surgical and functional results on 17 cases of robotic-assisted kidney transplantation (RAKT) performed at the same institution. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From July 2015 to June 2016, we performed 17 cases of RAKT from living donors in pre-emptive patients, who underwent laparoscopic nephrectomy...

BACKGROUND: Post-operative morbidity affects up to 36% of cardiac surgical patients. However, few countries reliably record morbidity outcome data, despite patients wanting to be informed of all the risks associated with surgery. The Cardiac Post-Operative Morbidity Score (C-POMS) is a new tool for describing and scoring (0-13) total morbidity burden after cardiac surgery, derived by noting the presence/absence of 13 morbidity domains on days 3, 5, 8 and 15. Identifying modifiable C-POMS risk factors may suggest targets for intervention to reduce morbidity and healthcare costs...

Disaster debris management operations make up a significant portion of recovery expenses. The following study aims to examine how the presence of a plan makes disaster debris management effective and efficient. Ninety-five counties in the United States who received major disaster declarations between 2012 and 2015 were surveyed to examine the quality of their debris management processes. Forty-nine of these counties had debris management plans while forty-six did not. Statistical tests were conducted to address discrepancies in the effectiveness and efficiency of the debris management processes between the two groups...

The residence of municipal solid waste within a landfill body results in a significant change of material properties. Experiences with the energetic utilisation of the burnable fractions from formerly landfilled waste are hardly documented, the influence of refuse derived fuels (RDF) from such materials on the performance of modern waste-to-energy plants is not sufficiently described in scientific literature. Therefore this study focuses on the energetic utilisation of refuse derived fuel from landfilled waste, processed in a mechanical waste treatment facility, and the impact of the material on the operation of the incineration plant...

This study evaluated the techno-economic performance and potential benefits of methanol production through catalytic gasification of forest residues and lignin. The results showed that while catalytic gasification enables increased cold gas efficiencies and methanol yields compared to non-catalytic gasification, the additional pre-treatment energy and loss of electricity production result in small or no system efficiency improvements. The resulting required methanol selling prices (90-130€/MWh) are comparable with production costs for other biofuels...

BACKGROUND: Promoting quality of life (QoL) is a key priority in cancer care. We investigated the hypothesis that, in comparison to usual care, exercise post-neoadjuvant chemoradiation therapy/prior to surgical resection will reduce pain, fatigue, and insomnia, and will improve physical and mental health perceptions in patients with locally advanced stage rectal cancer. METHODS: In this non-randomized controlled pilot trial, patients in the supervised exercise group (EG; M age = 64 years; 64% male) and in the control group (CG; M age = 72 years; 69% male) completed the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer core Quality of Life questionnaire and the RAND 36-Item Health Survey three times: pre-neoadjuvant chemoradiation therapy (Time 1; n EC = 24; n CG = 11), post-neoadjuvant chemoradiation therapy/pre-exercise intervention (Time 2; n EC = 23; n CG = 10), and post-exercise intervention (Time 3; n EC = 22; n CG = 10)...

Recovering neural responses from electrode recordings is fundamental for understanding the dynamics of neural networks. This effort is often obscured by stimulus artifacts in the recordings, which result from stimuli injected into the electrode-tissue interface. Stimulus artifacts, which can be orders of magnitude larger than the neural responses of interest, can mask short-latency evoked responses. Furthermore, simultaneous neural stimulation and recording on the same electrode generates artifacts with larger amplitudes compared to a separate electrode setup, which inevitably overwhelm the amplifier operation and cause unrecoverable neural signal loss...

Colors play a fundamental role for children, both in the everyday life and in education. They recognize the surrounding world, and play games making a large use of colors. They learn letters and numbers by means of colors. As a consequence, early diagnosis of color blindness is an crucial to support an individual affected by this visual perception alteration at the initial phase of his/her life. The diagnosis of red-green color deficiencies (protanopia or deuteranopia) is commonly accomplished by means of the Ishihara test, which consists of plates showing dots with different sizes where some of them compose numbers within a gamut of colors while the ones composing the background have different colors...

This paper presents a closed-loop optogenetic stimulation device to achieve online modulation of neurons. The device is designed to be mountable on small rodents in pre-clinical settings. Considering the size of rodents and the need for portability, a single-piece self-contained device is developed which allows real-time photostimulation based on detected neuronal states. It consists of three components: a neural recorder, a control algorithm, and an optogenetic stimulator. The neural recorder which is realized by analogue circuitry measures the neural signal...
