Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) is more frequent in Northern rather than Southern countries. Very few studies have been conducted in Africa. We have performed a retrospective descriptive study including clinical and laboratory profiles of 30 Tunisian GPA patients seen at the department of Internal Medicine of the University Hospital of la Rabta from 2000 to 2014. Mean age at initial GPA diagnosis was 46±12 years, and the average number of months between the onset of symptoms and diagnosis was 25. Seventeen (56%) were male, and 13 (44%) were female...

Information about the epidemiology, clinical manifestations and comorbidities of sarcoidosis among Caucasians is relatively scarce. This review focuses primarily on the data from a recently published Caucasianpredominant population-based cohort from Olmsted County, Minnesota. Overall, the incidence rate was 10.0 per 100,000 population, which suggested that sarcoidosis is less common in Caucasians than in Blacks, but is more common in Caucasians than in Asians. Intrathoracic involvement was seen in the vast majority of patients, but less than half have respiratory symptoms...

Filter samples collected during winter of 2015-16 from two polluted urban locations (Allahabad and Kanpur) residing within Indo-Gangetic plain (IGP) showed high levels of water-soluble organic aerosols (WSOA). Total organic aerosols (OA) in submicron fraction, measured at Kanpur in real time via Aerosol Mass Spectrometer also showed substantially high concentration levels. WSOA to OA contribution in Kanpur was found to be very high (around 55%) indicating significant contributions from secondary OA (SOA). On average, WSOA oxidation ratio (O/C) was found to be higher (15-20%) in Kanpur than at Allahabad...

Improved intrathecal (IT) pump technology is increasing the accuracy of IT opioid bolus dosing and promising advances in pain therapy. Opioid bolus dosing can be used with a minimal continuous infusion or it can function as the sole therapy. Bolus-only dosing is characterized by minimal use of opioid (often less than 1 mg of IT morphine). It achieves adequate pain control while reducing tolerance and possibly opioid-induced hyperalgesia. It may prevent receptor saturation, and provide a "washing out" of the opioid receptor that prevents the observed dose escalation resulting from continuous infusions...

Municipal organic waste (MOW) is a promising feedstock for biogas plants and separate collection will increase available quantities. To close nutrient circles digestates shall be redistributed to arable land. However, less is known about digestate properties and how they are influenced during digestion. Therefore, changes in nutrient and heavy metal concentration in the solid digestate were investigated during anaerobic treatment of MOW in a two-stage laboratory biogas plant. Results show that the solid digestate is exposed to element accumulation, except for N, P and Mg...

Two up-flow blanket filter (UBF) reactors were employed to treat synthetic wastewater with different substrate concentrations and nitrogen load rates (NLR) for 178days. During days 0-60, higher influent NLR of R2 (0.21-0.58kg·m(3)·d) slowed down the formation of anammox sludge compared with the lower NLR of R1 (0.18-0.31kg·m(3)·d). Difference in sludge color and nitrogen conversion rate indicated greater anammox activity of R2 than R1. During days 61-178, R1 and R2 achieved the maximum nitrogen removal rates (NRR) of 1...

The lower utilization ratios of high-content VFAs resulted in less lipid yield by the oleaginous yeast Cryptococcus curvatus ATCC 20509. In this work, increasing the inoculation concentration to OD600=5.1 improved the acetic acid utilization ratio (99.8%) and lipids production (4.63g/L) in mediums with 30g/L of acetic acid. For the higher acetic acid concentration (40g/L), increasing the nitrogen to carbon ratio (0.033) and raising the initial pH (pH=8) was superior over improvement in the inoculate, with the lipid production increased from 1...

There is growing concern about the combined effects of multiple human-induced stressors on biodiversity. In particular, there are substantial knowledge gaps about the combined effects of existing stressors (e.g. pollution) and predicted environmental stress from climate change (e.g. ocean warming). We investigated the impacts of ocean warming and engineered nanoparticles (nano-zinc oxide, nZnO) on larvae of a cosmopolitan tropical sea urchin, Tripneustes gratilla. Larval T. gratilla were exposed to all combinations of three temperatures, 25, 27 and 29 °C (current SST and near-future predicted warming of +2 and + 4 °C) and six concentrations of nZnO (0, 0...

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the USA with a 5-year survival rate less than 3% to 5%. Gemcitabine remains as a standard care for PDAC patients. Although protein neddylation is abnormally activated in many human cancers, whether neddylation dysregulation is involved in PDAC and whether targeting neddylation would sensitize pancreatic cancer cells to gemcitabine remain elusive. Here we report that high expression of neddylation components, NEDD8 and NAE1, are associated with poor survival of PDAC patients...

One of the most frequently used high-resolution glycan analysis methods in the biopharmaceutical and biomedical fields is capillary electrophoresis with laser-induced fluorescence (CE-LIF) detection. Glycans are usually labeled by reductive amination with a charged fluorophore containing a primary amine, which reacts with the aldehyde group at the reducing end of the glycan structures. In this reaction, first a Schiff base is formed that is reduced to form a stable conjugate by a hydrogenation reagent, such as sodium cyanoborohydride...

Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (pNETs) are rare neoplasms representing less than 2% of all pancreatic malignancies. The PI3K-AKT-mTOR pathway is often deregulated in pNETs and seems to play a key role in tumorigenesis. Everolimus, an inhibitor of the mTOR pathway, has demonstrated efficacy in the treatment of pNETs. Nevertheless de novo or acquired drug resistance is responsible for disease progression and represents a major obstacle to overcome by clinicians. Blocking the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway may cover the supposed main mechanisms of resistance to everolimus...

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin 9 (PCSK9) has emerged as a popular target in the development of new cholesterol-lowering drugs and therapeutic interventions for atherosclerosis. PCSK9 could accelerate atherosclerosis through mechanisms beyond the degradation of the hepatic low-density lipoprotein receptor. Several clinical studies suggested that PCSK9 is involved in atherosclerotic inflammation. Accordingly, this study aimed to explore the role of PCSK9 in vascular inflammation that promotes atherosclerotic progression...

Regeneration failure after primary spinal cord injury (SCI) leads to diverse clinical complications in a severity- and level of SCI-dependent manner. The cost of treating both of them (initial regeneration failure and following complications) would be prohibitive, particularly in less developed nations. The well-recognized circumstances arose from primary SCI include excitotoxicity and inflammation. SCI increases concentrations of extracellular amino acids (EAAs) in the severity-dependent manner and the maximum level of EAAs at the injury site will be reduced by distance from the injury site...
