Periauricular paresthesia may afflict patients for a significant amount of time after facelift surgery. When performing face and neck lift surgery, temple and posterior auricular flap dissection is undertaken directly over the auriculotemporal, great auricular, and lesser occipital nerve territory, leading to potential damage to the nerve. The auriculotemporal nerve remains under the thin outer superficial fascia just below the subfollicular level in the prehelical area. To prevent damage to the auriculotemporal nerve and to protect the temporal hair follicle, the dissection plane should be kept just above the thin fascia covering the auriculotemporal nerve...

Reference evapotranspiration (ET0) is important for agricultural, environmental and other studies, and understanding the attribution of its change is helpful to provide information for irrigation scheduling and water resources management. The present study investigates the attribution of the change of ET0 at 49 meteorological stations in the middle reaches of Yellow River basin (MRYRB) of China from 1960 to 2012. Results show that annual ET0 increases from the northwest to the southeast of MRYRB in space. We find that annual ET0 clearly presents a zigzag change pattern rather than a monotonically change during the whole period...

Liver abscess is a rare but potentially fatal disease with mortality rates of 2 - 12 %. The spectrum of causative microorganisms varies across the world and is changing due to increasing worldwide travel activity. As a result, previously less frequent pathogens must increasingly be considered in the differential diagnosis. The most common pathogens of liver abscess are so-called abscess streptococci, anaerobes and Gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Certain clones among the Gram-negatives, typically among Klebsiella spp...

BACKGROUND: Myeloma is consistently preceded by premalignant monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS). In >5% of MGUS patients there is a second MGUS clone (biclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance; BGUS), yet, at myeloma diagnosis, presentation of biclonal gammopathy myeloma (BGMy) is considered less frequent, implying that myeloma eradicates coexisting MGUS. METHODS: In the largest study of its kind, we assessed BGMy frequency amongst 6399 newly diagnosed myeloma patients enrolled in recent UK clinical trials...

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PNETs) are rare neoplasms accounting for less than 5% of all pancreatic malignancies. These tumors are characterized by clinical and prognostical heterogeneity and are predominantly diagnosed in a metastatic stage. Cytotoxic chemotherapy, along with alkylating agents and antimetabolites as well as molecular targeted agents (everolimus, sunitinib), is used in the treatment of advanced PNETs. After the approval of lanreotide for unresectable PNETs, an additional therapeutic option has become available; however, the best sequence of therapies and patient stratification to different treatments remains challenging...

H2O2 residuals from advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) may have critical impacts on the microbial ecology and performance of subsequent biological treatment processes, but little is known. The objective of this study was to evaluate how H2O2 residuals influence sand systems with an emphasis on dissolved organic carbon (DOC) removal, microbial activity change and bacterial community evolution. The results from laboratory batch studies showed that 0.25 mg/L H2O2 lowered DOC removal by 10% while higher H2O2 concentrations at 3 and 5 mg/L promoted DOC removal by 8% and 28%...

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is widespread in the environment, which causes serious health and safety concerns. A mechanistic study on reductive defluorination of PFOA by titanium(III) citrate in the presence of catalysts was conducted. Vitamin B12 was used to catalyze reduction reactions by shuttling electrons from a reducing agent (electron donor) to PFOA to produce a Co-carbon bond intermediates. In the presence of copper nanoparticles, a precursor complex, B12-C7F14COOH, adsorbed on the metal surface, followed by a hydrogenolytic reaction to form less-fluorinated products...
