In the present study, the strain Brevibacterium frigoritolerans DC2 was explored for the efficient and extracellular synthesis of silver nanoparticles. These biosynthesized silver nanoparticles were characterized by ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry, which detected the formation of silver nanoparticles in the reaction mixture and showed a maximum absorbance at 420 nm. In addition, field emission transmission electron microscopy revealed the spherical shape of the nanoparticles. The dynamic light scattering results indicated the average particle size of the product was 97 nm with a 0...

Momordica charantia L. belongs to the family Curcubitaceae and it is very common in many Brazilian regions. The plant is a liana with flowers and yellow fruits that present red seeds when are ripe. Popularly known as "melão-de-sãocaetano", "melão amargo" or "cabaço-amargo", it possesses many uses: antidiabetic, antihelmintic, antmicrobial, anticancerigenous and antioxidant. The phytochemical prospection of the fresh and dried leaves extracts showed the presence of different classes of secondary metabolites, as flavonoids, alkaloids and tannins, that have demonstrated antimicrobial action...

Synthetic, spectroscopic and antimicrobial aspects of some fertility inhibitor heterobimetallic complexes have been carried out. These heterobimetallic chelates [M(C(5)H(5)N(3))(2)M(2)'(R)(4)]Cl(2) (M = Pd or Pt and M' = Si, Sn, Ti and Zr) have been successfully synthesinzed via the reaction of M(C(5)H(7)N(3))(2)Cl(2) with group four or fourteen dichlorides in 1:2 stoichiometric proportions. The products were characterized by elemental analyses, molecular weight determinations, magnetic susceptibility measurements, conductance, and IR multinuclear NMR and electronic spectral studies...

AIMS: To investigate the effect of guidelines and supervision of the prescription of antimicrobial agents at Reykjavik Hospital on the cost and the amount used of these agents. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The investigation was conducted from 1994 to 1997. Guidelines were issued for the prescription of antimicrobial agents in empirical treatment and for prophylactics in surgery. The availability of these agents was reduced and the physicians had to order these drugs by filling out a special application form...

The prevalence of metallo-beta-lactamases (MBLs) produced by isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter baumannii and the activities of various antmicrobial combinations against MBL producer strains were investigated. During the period from June 2003 till July 2004, 120 P. aeruginosa and 9 A. baumannii nonduplicate isolates were obtained from burn wounds. Forty strains (37 P. aeruginosa, 3 A. baumannii) were selected because of resistance to carbapenems. Screening for MBL production was performed in the latter isolates by the combined disk method which depends on comparing the zones given by disks containing imipenem with and without ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA)...

OBJECTIVE: To isolate and purify antibacterial polypeptides from human cervical mucus. METHODS: Human cervical mucus was collected from human healthy subjects and acid-soluble extract was obtained by solving the mucus with 5% acetic acid in the presence of protease inhibitors. The antibacterial components were identified by Agar radial diffusion assay and gel overlay technique. For further purification, Preparative acid-urea gel electrophoresis and Reverse Phase HPLC were performed...

Diarrhea is a major clinical problem in HIV-infected patients. There is a need to monitor antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of enteric bacterial pathogens in order to ensure appropriate treatment and control of infections. The objectives of this study was to identify and determine the magnitude of potential enteric pathogens including Salmonella, Shigella, Campylobacter and other species in HIV-infected and HIV-non-infected patients with diarrhea, to evaluate the current antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of the clinical isolates and the association of enteric bacterial pathogens in HIV infected patients with diarrhea...

The oxazolidinones are a new chemical class of synthetic antmicrobials characterized by a unique mechanism of protein synthesis inhibition. Linezolid is the first compound of this class and has recently received approval for the treatment of community- and hospital-acquired pneumonia and skin and skin structure infections. In vitro tests demonstrate that linezolid possesses a significant activity against Gram-positive pathogens including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE), vancomycin-intermediate strains (VISA) and penicillin-resistant pneumococci (PRPN)...

OBJECTIVE: Among uremic patients on hemodialysis, infectious complications leading to a high incidence of morbidity and mortality are a well-documented problem. In this multi-dose study, the safety, tolerance, and pharmacokinetics of cefepime during high-flux hemodialysis were investigated and an improved dosing schedule is presented. METHODS: Six long-term hemodialysis patients received 2 g cefepime i.v. at the end of hemodialysis three times per week. RESULTS: Trough levels of cefepime were 23...
