BACKGROUND: Midline catheters (midlines) are increasingly used in patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD). OBJECTIVE: This study describes current practice and acute complications associated with midlines in CKD patients. DESIGNS, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Trained abstractors at 66 hospitals from the Michigan Hospital Medicine Safety (HMS) Consortium collected data on a sample of patients who received a midline during hospitalization...

The Society for Vascular Surgery, the American Venous Forum, and the American Vein and Lymphatic Society recently published Part I of the 2022 clinical practice guidelines on varicose veins. Recommendations were based on the latest scientific evidence researched following an independent systematic review and meta-analysis of five critical issues affecting the management of patients with lower extremity varicose veins, using the patients, interventions, comparators, and outcome system to answer critical questions...

OBJECTIVE: To retrospectively evaluate results of dorsal hand and chest vein foam sclerotherapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective chart review of dorsal hand and chest vein sclerotherapy patients at a dermatology practice was performed between January 2014 and April 2023. Penile Mondor's disease is a rare condition characterized by superficial dorsal vein thrombosis of the penis, whose pathogenesis remains unclear. Prolonged or aggressive sexual intercourse has been identified as a potential risk factor. We present a case of a 54-year-old man who developed a penile mass following aggressive sexual activity. Diagnosis of superficial dorsal vein thrombosis was made using ultrasound and confirmed by MRI. The patient underwent conservative treatment and abstained from sexual activity...

We report two cases with leg ulcers in Behçet's disease (BD) resistant to conventional immunosuppressive therapy (CIST) alone but successfully treated with adding on adalimumab (ADA). BD, which can affect vessels of any size and type, is a systemic vasculitis. In the vascular system, veins are the most predominatly affected blood vessels with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and recurrent superficial vein thrombophlebitis (SVT) that are the most common vascular signs of the disease in the lower extremities. Leg ulcers, commonly associated with vasculitis or deep vein thrombosis, are rare in patients with BD...

BACKGROUND: Behçet disease (BD) is a chronic inflammatory systemic disease that affects skin mucosa, joints, eyes, and blood vessels. Behçet disease shows some clinical differences in terms of disease manifestations and prognosis among the Silk Road countries, as well as various ethnicities even in the same country. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the clinical features and disease course of BD using cluster analysis in Van province, Eastern Turkey. METHODS: This study was carried out in a tertiary referral center in Van province, by reviewing medical records...

Hughes-Stovin syndrome (HSS) is a systemic inflammatory condition of unknown origin that is considered to be part of the Behçet's syndrome (BS) spectrum. Recurrent venous thrombosis and superficial thrombophlebitis in combination with bilateral pulmonary artery aneurysms (PAA) represent the hallmark of HSS. The diagnostic evaluation includes computed tomography pulmonary angiography to detect signs of pulmonary vasculitis. The management of HSS is based on the European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology (EULAR) recommendations for BS and mainly comprises immunosuppressive therapy with glucocorticoids and cyclophosphamide...

Rationale: Little is known about the safety of infusing vasopressors through a midline catheter. Objectives: To evaluate safety outcomes after vasopressor administration through a midline. Methods: We conducted a cohort study of adults admitted to 39 hospitals in Michigan (December 2017-March 2022) who received vasopressors while either a midline or peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) was in place. Patients receiving vasopressors through a midline were compared with those receiving vasopressors through a PICC and, separately, to those with midlines in place but who received vasopressors through a different catheter...

Superficial thrombophlebitis, also known as superficial venous thrombosis, is an inflammatory condition involving the veins just below the surface of the skin secondary to clotted blood within that vein. The majority of cases are self-limited or resolve with a short course of anti-inflammatory medications and the application of warm compresses. Due to the self-limited nature of this disease process, clinically significant complications have rarely been described but are being seen more often in recent literature...

INTRODUCTION: Mondor's disease of the penis, or superficial thrombophlebitis affecting penile veins, is a rare condition. Common causes include prothombotic states, venous stasis or excessive manipulation. The literature includes one case report of Mondor's Disease after endovenous laser ablation and foam sclerotherapy and a case series after open saphenofemoral junction ligation. However, there have been no noted cases of this rare complication after mechanochemical ablation of the GSV...

A 60-year-old male patient presented to the emergency department of our hospital with right-sided chest wall pain and a palpable subcutaneous cord-like structure along the right anterior chest wall. Examination revealed tenderness over the cord-like structure, and the skin overlying the structure was freely mobile and did not have any sign of infection or inflammation. Bedside ultrasonography revealed an uncompressible tubular structure with the absence of a color Doppler flow signal. The patient's presentation was suggestive of Mondor's disease...

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is recognised to be a prothrombotic state and an increased risk of venous thrombosis has been documented with IBD. However, reports of superficial venous thrombosis are less common, and there is a degree of uncertainty in the appropriate management of such patients. We report about a 55-year-old lady who presented with a flare of ulcerative colitis when cyclosporine (started for a previous episode of acute severe ulcerative colitis) was stopped. This flare was associated with the appearance of cord-like structures on the right lateral abdominal wall, which were confirmed to be thrombosed veins consistent with Mondor's disease...

In the broad range of human diseases, thrombo-inflammation appears as a clinical manifestation. Clinically, it is well characterized in context of superficial thrombophlebitis that is recognized as thrombosis and inflammation of superficial veins. However, it is more hazardous when developed in the microvasculature of injured/inflamed/infected tissues and organs. Several diseases like sepsis and ischemia-reperfusion can cause formation of microvascular thrombosis subsequently leading to thrombo-inflammation...

Mai-Luo-Shu-Tong pill is an effective traditional Chinese medicine formula for the treatment of superficial thrombophlebitis, but it was insufficiently chemically scrutinized. In this study, the mass spectral data of Mai-Luo-Shu-Tong pill were acquired by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled with Q Exactive hybrid Quadrupole-Orbitrap high resolution mass spectrometry. Then, a data mining strategy combining multiple data processing methods was used to identify chemical constituents in Mai-Luo-Shu-Tong pill by constructing a database of precursor ions and summarizing the mass spectral fragmentation behaviors...

Cannula provoked upper extremity superficial vein thrombophlebitis (UESVT) is common. Retrospective audit of 93 consecutive patients, 51% male, median age 57 years (range 20-91), with symptomatic UESVT revealed varied management including symptomatic management (37%), prophylactic (37%) and higher dose anticoagulation (27%). There was 2% (95% confidence interval (CI) 0-7.6) thrombus extension and 1% (95% CI 0-5.9) major bleeding, both limited to cancer. We argue anticoagulation is unnecessary in most UESVT patients...

Cyanoacrylate glue closure (CAC) is being increasingly used as a minimally invasive procedure for the treatment of symptomatic incompetent saphenous veins. The most common adverse event associated with CAC has been phlebitis, including hypersensitivity phlebitis, superficial thrombophlebitis, and granulomatous phlebitis. This complication can be serious and debilitating. In the present report, we have described a case of symptomatic septicemia after CAC that required surgical excision of the treated saphenous veins...
