BACKGROUND: In autumn 2022, the epidemics due to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and influenza overlapped, and these diseases can present with the same symptomatology. The use of a triple antigen test (SARS-CoV-2 + influenza A/B + RSV) seems crucial for accurate viral diagnosis in the context of implementing long-acting monoclonal antibody vaccination against RSV in the upcoming RSV season. METHODS: We assessed the usefulness of the triple test in real life in this prospective study performed from October 2022 to May 2023 and involving 116 pediatricians (2 emergency department pediatricians and 114 ambulatory pediatricians)...

This report focuses on the clinical course and treatment of an infant male who had a progressively enlarging tongue mass initially thought to be an infantile hemangioma but was later found to be an infantile fibrosarcoma. Treatment included surgical excision with anticipated difficult mask ventilation with active rhino/enterovirus infection bronchiolitis and recent croup. Complete surgical excision is the mainstay of treatment, and the patient did have negative margins after complete surgical re-excision. The patient has surveillance MRI scans and remains without fibrosarcoma recurrence...

BACKGROUND: In response to a critical pediatric bed shortage in 2022, an urgent process change was required to provide safe and timely medical care. We proposed a pilot for an advanced practice provider (APP)-run short stay unit (SSU) for select pediatric hospital medicine (PHM) patients. OBJECTIVE: To compare length of stay (LOS) and cost before and after implementation of a PHM APP-led SSU pilot at a tertiary pediatric hospital. DESIGNS, SETTINGS, AND PARTICIPANTS: Single-center prospective pilot observational cohort study with historical control...

This study investigates the impact of vaccination against SARS-CoV-2 on health outcomes and hospital contacts in children and adolescents aged 5-18 years infected with the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant, comparing previously vaccinated with unvaccinated. Using national register data, vaccinated and unvaccinated Danish children and adolescents with a positive SARS-CoV-2 test between 1 January and 31 March 2022 (Omicron dominance period) were included. The Prior Event Rate Ratio (PERR) was used to explore differences in hospital contacts (hospitalizations and emergency room (ER) visits), while Inverse Treatment Probability Weighted (IPW) risk ratios were used to explore the risk of severe health outcomes within six weeks following SARS-CoV-2 infection...

Pediatric spontaneous gastric perforation is a rarely encountered condition with poorly understood causal mechanisms. We present a novel case of a two-month-old female infant from Nepal who previously experienced Croup and subsequently developed severe abdominal distention and vomiting. Abdominal X-ray findings confirmed pneumoperitoneum, prompting immediate laparotomy. Intraoperative examination revealed a substantial perforation along the posterior stomach wall, specifically along the lesser curvature. The surgical intervention involved gastrorrhaphy and omentopexy using 3-0 Vicryl sutures, leading to an uneventful postoperative recovery...

The low rate of reproductive efficiency in horses may be linked to the equine industry's practice of maintaining breeding stock that stands out for its athletic or morphological performance but exhibits poor reproductive efficiency. In this study, the age at first foaling, age at last foaling, interval between first and second foaling, average interval between foaling, foaling number and reproductive efficiency, and their relationship with the morphological records in 19,758 Pura Raza Española (PRE) mares were analyzed...

The relationship between postures, sleep stages and eye state was established in two species of deer, the Indian sambar (Rusa unicolor) and sika deer (Cervus nippon), based on video recording. In both species, the state of rest or behavioral sleep was recorded in the sternal position, holding the head above the ground, and in the lateral position, with the head resting on the croup or on the ground. Rest accounted for at least 80% of the time in these positions. Based on behavior criteria a substantial portion of rest represented slow-wave sleep...

The African straw-coloured fruit Bat, Eidolon helvum, is a Yinpterochiroptera bat that is of public health and ecological importance. This study investigated the light microscopic morphology, morphometry and histochemistry of the skin and its glands across the cheek, withers, croup, ventral abdomen, perianal region, wing membrane, intercrural membrane and foot pad of the species. Sweat glands were absent and hypodermis was observed only in the withers, croup and ventral abdomen. The croup had the highest density of hair follicles while the perianal region had the highest density of sebaceous gland acini...

RV infections are associated with various illnesses, including colds, asthma exacerbations, croup and pneumonia, imposing significant and extended societal burdens. Characterized by a high mutation rate and genomic diversity, RV displays a diverse serological landscape, encompassing a total of 174 serotypes identified to date. This study analyzed data for 1098 children: 575 diagnosed with COVID-19 between January and June 2022 (early Omicron) and 523 hospitalized from July 2022 to April 2023 (late Omicron). New Omicron subvariants lead to similar recovery rates without deaths and acute respiratory distress syndrome in children as BA.1 and BA.2, however, they more often cause fever and croup. Children suffering from comorbidities, presenting with pulmonary lesions and older, may be prone to a more severe consequences of COVID-19 in terms of the currently dominating Omicron subvariants...

Croup, also known as laryngotracheobronchitis, frequently leads to blockages in the upper respiratory tract in young children, presenting symptoms, such as a raspy voice, a distinctive cough, and noisy breathing during inhalation. Despite being a condition that often resolves on its own, it puts considerable strain on healthcare resources due to regular doctor visits, emergency room usage, and occasional hospital stays. Research focused on larger populations suggests that only a small percentage of children with croup end up requiring hospital admission for their condition...
