Gynaecological surgery is undergoing a process of constant change and therefore some of its complications as well. The incorporation of endoscopy has added a new dimension, with the rate of complications related to its complexity. Endoscopy has meant a great advance in surgery, and specifically in gynaecology, which benefits from two ways of approaching the genital apparatus: laparoscopy and histeroscopy. These techniques involve risks that are specific to these techniques: the induction of pneumoperitoneum, insertion of trocar, remote coagulation, vascular passage of the glycine employed in uterine relaxation during hysteroscopy, etc...

Liquid-based cytology represents an opportunity to re-evaluate endometrial cytology. We evaluated the accuracy of liquid-based endometrial cytology as compared to biopsy in 670 women scheduled for histeroscopy because of thickened endometrium (>4 mm), as evaluated by transvaginal sonography. Endometrial biopsy detected pathology in 41 (6%) of cases (21 of which were adenocarcinomas). Cytologic study found pathology in 62 (9%) cases (19 of which were adenocarcinomas). Two hundred ninety-one biopsies (43%) and 28 (4%) cytologies were inadequate...

Usefulness of fractionated curettage, histeroscopy, transvaginal sonography and MR-imaging in the preoperative diagnosis of cervical involvement of endometrial cancer was studied. Sensitivity, specificity, efficacy, positive and negative prognostic value of above-mentioned examinations were compared. None of examinations was adequate for diagnosis of presence of cervical invasion because of their low positive prognostic values. Negative prognostic value of all examinations was high. MR-imaging and transvaginal sonography had the highest efficacy and comparatively high sensitivity and specificity...

This retrospective analysis intends to evaluate by histeroscopy the endometrial findings in a group of 63 patients in post-menopausal treated with tamoxifen for breast cancer. Our patients assumed tamoxifen for a different period between 6 and 120 months. Patients have been divided in two groups: I) patients undergoing hysteroscopy because of some clinical symptoms; II) patients who undergoing hysteroscopy as a routine examination. The most important observation of this work is the correlation between the presence of negative endometrium and low risk hyperplasia (LRH) associated to: symptomatology and duration of therapy...

The incidence of genital tuberculosis has increased for the last decade 2-fold reaching 11.9% of all the extrapulmonary cases. Three clinical forms of tuberculosis of the uterine appendages are distinguished: latent or minor inflammation, marked inflammation with tubuloovarian lesions, tuberculomas. The diagnosis of the disease, especially of latent forms, is not easy and requires studying the disease history, the results of subcutaneous 50 TU tuberculin test, histerosalpingography, endoscopic (surgical laparoscopy, histeroscopy, colposcopy), histological and microbiological findings...
