Renal pathology is a relatively recent entry in nephrology. While diseases of the kidney are old, their study began in the 19th century with the report of Richard Bright of the lesions of end-stage kidney disease. Its easy diagnosis from albuminuria soon elevated Bright's nephritis into a leading cause of death. The transformative events in the care of these cases were renal replacement therapy that converted a fatal into a chronic disease, and kidney biopsy that allowed study of the course and pathogenesis of kidney disease...

BACKGROUND: Nephronophthisis (NPHP) is a rare autosomal recessive inherited tubulointerstitial nephropathy, the most prevalent genetic cause of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in children. Convincing evidence indicated that the overall prevalence of NPHP in adult-onset ESRD is very likely to be an underestimation. Therefore, understanding the genetic background and clinicopathologic features of adult-onset NPHP is warranted. CASE PRESENTATION: we reported one intriguing case with concurrent NPHP3 c...

In this systematic review, we assessed the safety and possible safety events of native glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP)(1-42) in human studies with administration of synthetic human GIP. We searched the PubMed database for all trials investigating synthetic human GIP(1-42) administration. A total of 67 studies were included. Study duration ranged from 30minutes to 6 days. In addition to healthy individuals, the studies included individuals with impaired glucose tolerance, type 2 diabetes, type 1 diabetes, chronic pancreatitis and secondary diabetes, latent autoimmune diabetes in adults, diabetes caused by a mutation in the hepatocyte nuclear factor 1-alpha gene, end-stage renal disease, chronic renal insufficiency, critical illness, hypoparathyroidism, or cystic fibrosis-related diabetes...

In the first phase of its treatment program, Egypt aimed to treat 250,000 people annually until 2020, thereby reducing the number of viremic patients and limiting hepatitis C virus (HCV) transmission. Egypt strives to eradicate HCV and HCV-associated morbidity by 2030. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of HCV infection among end-stage renal disease patients and the reasons for non-treatment among those offered free medication. This multi-center cross-sectional study was conducted during the period from November 2022 to April 2023...

Testosterone deficiency is a prevalent condition that frequently affects individuals with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and those who have undergone renal transplantation. While the etiology of this condition is complex, its implications in this population are far-reaching, impacting various domains such as endocrine profile, sexual and erectile function, bone mineral density (BMD), anemia, and graft survival following renal transplantation. Herein, we review the most recent literature exploring the pathophysiology of testosterone deficiency in ESRD and renal transplant patients, examining its diverse effects on this demographic, and assessing the advantages of testosterone replacement therapy (TRT)...

Obesity and chronic kidney disease (CKD) are common and frequently coexisting medical conditions. Already well known to be a risk factor for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), ischaemic heart disease, stroke, hypertension, malignancy and premature death, obesity also predisposes to CKD. Elevated weight leads to declining renal function through several mechanisms, including established pathways via metabolic syndrome, hypertension and T2DM, but also through relatively recently understood glomerulosclerosis, directly related to obesity...

PURPOSE: To evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on renal cell carcinoma (RCC) care in the Netherlands. METHODS: Newly diagnosed RCCs between 2018 and 2021 were selected from the Netherlands Cancer Registry; 2020-2021 was defined as COVID period and 2018-2019 as reference period. Numbers of RCCs were evaluated using 3-week-moving averages, overall and by disease stage and age. Changes in treatment were evaluated with logistic regression analyses. To evaluate possible delays in care, time to start of treatment was assessed...

Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is a chronic microvascular complication in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) and the leading cause of end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). Although glomerulosclerosis, tubular injury and interstitial fibrosis are typical damages of DKD, the interplay of different processes (metabolic factors, oxidative stress, inflammatory pathway, fibrotic signaling, and hemodynamic mechanisms) appears to drive the onset and progression of DKD. A growing understanding of the pathogenetic mechanisms, and the development of new therapeutics, is opening the way for a new era of nephroprotection based on precision-medicine approaches...

Kidney transplantation is an essential medical procedure that significantly enhances the survival rates and quality of life for patients with end-stage kidney disease. However, despite advancements in immunosuppressive therapies, allograft rejection remains a leading cause of organ loss. Notably, predictions of cellular rejection processes primarily rely on biopsy analysis, which is not routinely performed due to its invasive nature. The present work evaluates if the serum proteomic fingerprint, as acquired by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, can predict cellular rejection processes...

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects around 850 million people worldwide, posing significant challenges in healthcare due to complications like renal anemia, end-stage kidney disease, and cardiovascular diseases. This review focuses on the intricate interplay between iron metabolism, inflammation, and renal dysfunction in CKD. Renal anemia, prevalent in CKD, arises primarily from diminished erythropoietin (EPO) production and iron dysregulation, which worsens with disease progression. Functional and absolute iron deficiencies due to impaired absorption and chronic inflammation are key factors exacerbating erythropoiesis...

AIMS: The increasing prevalence of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in the United States (US) represents a considerable economic burden due to the high cost of dialysis treatment. This review examines data from real-world studies to identify cost drivers and explore areas where dialysis costs could be reduced. METHODS: We identified and synthesized evidence published from 2016-2023 reporting direct dialysis costs in adult US patients from a comprehensive literature search of MEDLINE, Embase, and grey literature sources (eg, US Renal Data System reports)...

Aristolochic acid (AA)-induced acute kidney injury (AKI) presents with progressive decline in renal function and rapid progression to end-stage renal disease. Among the multiple mechanisms identified in AKI, ferroptosis has been shown to be involved in various forms of AKI. But few studies have elucidated the role of ferroptosis in AA-induced AKI. In this study, we investigated the role of ferroptosis in AA-induced acute renal tubular injury in vivo and in vitro . Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are released from all cell types studied to date and act as intercellular communicators containing proteins, nucleic acids and lipid cargos. They have been shown to be involved in maintaining homoeostasis as well as playing a role in the development of pathology including hypertension and cardiovascular disease. It is estimated that there is 109 -1010 circulating EVs/mL in the plasma of healthy individuals derived from various sources. While the effect of EVs on vascular haemodynamic parameters will be dependent on the details of the model studied, we systematically searched and summarized current literature to find patterns in how exogenously injected EVs affected vascular haemodynamics...
