It has been observed that one's Behavioral Approach System (BAS) can have an effect on decision-making under uncertainty, although the results have been mixed. To discern the underlying neural substrates, we hypothesize that sex may explain the conflicting results. To test this idea, a large sample of participants was studied using resting state fMRI, utilizing fractional Amplitude of Low Frequency Fluctuations (fALFF) and Resting-State Functional Connectivity (rsFC) techniques. The results of the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) revealed an interaction between sex and BAS, particularly in the last 60 trials (decision-making under risk)...

Male cerambycid beetles of the large subfamilies Cerambycinae and Lamiinae produce aggregation-sex pheromones that attract both sexes. The pheromones of many species are conserved among both closely related species (e.g., congeners) and more distantly related species (e.g., different subfamilies), including those endemic to different continents. This parsimony in pheromone structures suggests that multiple species may be attracted to traps baited with blends of pheromones, and such blends are finding use in delineating geographic ranges of native species and in surveillance programs for incursions of exotic species...

Autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) has been a mainstay in myeloma treatment for over three decades, but patient prognosis post-ASCT varies significantly. In a retrospective study of 5259 patients with multiple myeloma (MM) at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences undergoing ASCT with a median 57-month follow-up, we divided the dataset into training (70%) and validation (30%) subsets. Employing univariable and multivariable Cox analyses, we systematically assessed 29 clinical variables, identifying crucial adverse prognostic factors, such as extended duration between MM diagnosis and ASCT, elevated serum ferritin, and reduced transferrin levels...

Hemoglobinopathies are the commonest monogenic disorder worldwide, with approximately seven percent of the world population being carriers of hemoglobinopathies. The healthcare utilization impact of thalassemia has resulted in global public health initiatives to screen for hemoglobinopathies, especially sickle cell disease (SCD). The Iowa Newborn Screening Program (INSP) has been in place for more than 50 years with a primary focus on detecting SCD. Recent changes in migration patterns have led to a global distribution of hemoglobinopathies in the western world, which has translated to an increase in the diagnosis of SCD and the incidental detection of non-sickling hemoglobinopathies within the INSP...

PURPOSE: The objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) assesses clinical competence in health sciences education. There is little research regarding the reliability and validity of using an OSCE during the transition from undergraduate to graduate medical education. The goal of this study was to measure the reliability of a unique 2-rater entrustable professional activity (EPA)-based OSCE format for transition to internship using generalizability theory for estimating reliability...

There is minimal research investigating the influence of advice on decision-making in older age. The present study investigated the effect of different types of bad advice, relative to no advice, on young and older adults' decision-making in the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT). Fifty-four older adults and 59 young adults completed the IGT after receiving no advice, or advice to select from disadvantageous deck A (small, high-frequency losses), or disadvantageous deck B (larger, low-frequency losses). Corrugator EMG, memory and fluid intelligence were assessed...

Roadway incidents involving farm equipment is a growing area of concern among agricultural safety and health and public health professionals. The aim of this project was to evaluate the usefulness of the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) and analyze the number of roadway fatal incidents that involve farm equipment. Data collected from the FARS through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration was used to summarize roadway incidents involving farm equipment. Cases from five midwestern states were analyzed from January to December 2020 using SPSS...

BACKGROUND: While the use of cumulative susceptibility reports, antibiograms, is recommended for improved empiric therapy and antibiotic stewardship, the predictive ability of antibiograms has not been well-studied. While enhanced antibiograms have been shown to better capture variation in susceptibility profiles by characteristics such as infection site or patient age, the potential for seasonal or spatial variation in susceptibility has not been assessed as important in predicting likelihood of susceptibility...

Mycoplasmas are known as the minimalist microorganisms in the microbes' world. Their minimalist nature makes them highly sensitive to the environmental conditions and limits their ability to survive for extended periods outside their animal host. Nevertheless, there are documented instances of mycoplasma transmission over significant distances and this phenomenon may be linked to relatively unexplored abilities of mycoplasmas, such as their capacity to synthesize biofilm-the predominant mode of bacterial growth in nature...

BACKGROUND: Research on the Alternative DSM-5 Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD) in DSM-5 's Section-III has demonstrated acceptable interrater reliability, a largely consistent latent structure, substantial correlations with theoretically and clinically relevant measures, and evidence for incremental concurrent and predictive validity after controlling for DSM-5 's Section II categorical personality disorders (PDs). However, the AMPD is not yet widely used clinically. One clinician concern may be caseness - that the new model will diagnose a different set of PD patients from that with which they are familiar...

The Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) was designed to assess decision-making under conditions of complexity and uncertainty; it is currently one of the most widely used tests to assess decision-making in both experimental and clinical settings. In the original version of the task, participants are given a loan of play money and four decks of cards and are asked to maximize profits. Although any single card unpredictably yields wins/losses, variations in frequency and size of gains/losses ultimately make two decks more advantageous in the long term...
