INTRODUCTION: We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of the duration of prophylactic antibiotic administration in patients undergoing transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) guided biopsy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 367 patients undergoing a prostate biopsy between September 2007 and June 2009 was reviewed retrospectively and divided into 2 groups according to prophilaxy: oral ciprofloxacin (750 mg every 12 hours) for 3 or more days in Group-1 and single day in Group-2. Demographic characteristics of patients, symptoms, PSA values, IPSS scores, prostate sizes, pathologic results and complications were compared between the groups...

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis is a serious complication in cirrhotic patients, and the changes in the microbiological characteristics reported in the last years are impacting the choice of antibiotic used in the treatment. AIM: To evaluate the change in the epidemiology and antibiotic resistance of the bacteria causing spontaneous bacterial peritonitis in a 7 years period. METHODS: All the cases of cirrhotic patients with spontaneous bacterial peritonitis with positive cultural examination were retrospectively studied...

BACKGROUND: The constant increase of pharmaceutical costs is of great concern to the administrators of the Spanish National Health Service. Antibiotics administered as prophilaxis prior to surgery, play an important role in this increase. The compliance of physicians with protocols for chemoprophylaxis is therefore an important factor in the control of these pharmaceutical costs. The degree of compliance with the pre-established protocols of prophylaxis prior to surgery are examined in a tertiary level hospital during 1992 and the extra costs due to the lack of compliance with these protocols are estimated using a sample of 371 subjects...

This issue on immunology and biotechnology opens with a survey of the contribution of immunology to medicine. Proteins, growth and differentiation factors, and monoclonal antibodies to surface antigens will have an impact in the 1990's likely similar to that of antibiotics in the 1950's. The characterization of factors and cell-surface molecules opens the investigation of the role of "recessive oncogenes" in the development of cancer. A further impact of immunology in the classical field of prophilaxis is represented by the innovative development of contraceptive vaccines based on the use of episomal shuttle vectors for the expression of surface sperm proteins able to induce an effective immune response...
