We investigated the prevalence and characteristics of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli among 258 residents of long-term care facilities (LTCFs) in Japan. Out of 258 fecal samples collected from nine LTCFs between November 2015 and March 2017, we recovered 59 ESBL-producing E. coli isolates. All isolates carried blaCTX-M genes, mainly blaCTX-M-27 (42.4%), blaCTX-M-14 (23.7%), and blaCTX-M-15 (18.6%). The isolates showed 7 serotypes (STs), including ST131 (n = 49, 83.1%) and ST38 (n = 4, 6...

We have investigated high-pressure, high-temperature phase transitions of spinel (Sp)-type MgV2 O4 , FeV2 O4 , and MnCr2 O4 . At 1200-1800 °C, MgV2 O4 Sp decomposes at 4-7 GPa into a phase assemblage of MgO periclase + corundum (Cor)-type V2 O3 , and they react at 10-15 GPa to form a phase with a calcium titanite (CT)-type structure. FeV2 O4 Sp transforms to CT-type FeV2 O4 at 12 GPa via decomposition phases of FeO wüstite + Cor-type V2 O3 . MnCr2 O4 Sp directly transforms to the calcium ferrite (CF)-structured phase at 10 GPa and 1000-1400 °C...

An 89-year-old man was referred to our hospital for treatment of hepatolithiasis causing recurrent cholangitis. He had undergone a prior Whipple procedure. Computed tomography demonstrated left-sided hepatolithiasis. First, we conducted peroral direct cholangioscopy (PDCS) using an ultraslim endoscope. Although PDCS was successfully conducted, it was unsuccessful in removing all the stones. The stones located in the B2 segment were difficult to remove because the endoscope could not be inserted deeply into this segment due to the small size of the intrahepatic bile duct...

Consumption of mycotoxin contaminated foodstuffs is common in regions where foods are not adequately controlled and routinely monitored, and this could have adverse effects on the health of consumers. In this study, 100 samples of roasted nuts (50 cashew nuts and 50 peanuts) vended within two cities of Sierra Leone were analyzed for mycotoxins and other microbial metabolites by a liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometric method. The peanut samples contained detectable levels of 17 microbial metabolites, including aflatoxins B1 , B2 , G1 and G2 , and alternariol, whilst none of these metabolites were found in the cashew samples...

Inhibitors of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductases, collectively known as statins, have been shown to minimize cerebral ischemic events in patients. We assessed the mechanisms of simvastatin pretreatment in preventing cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury in rats using a model of middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). Rats were pretreated with simvastatin 14 days prior to MCAO induction. At 3, 24, and 48 hours after reperfusion, bradykinin levels in the ischemic penumbra were assayed by ELISA, mRNA levels of bradykinin B2 receptors (BK-2Rs) and CD11b were measured by fluorescent quantitative real-time PCR (RT-PCR), and co-expression of microglia and BK-2Rs was determined by immunofluorescence...

Structural transition in amorphous oxides, including glasses, under extreme compression above megabar pressures (>1 million atmospheric pressure, 100 GPa) results in unique densification paths that differ from those in crystals. Experimentally verifying the atomistic origins of such densifications beyond 100 GPa remains unknown. Progress in inelastic X-ray scattering (IXS) provided insights into the pressure-induced bonding changes in oxide glasses; however, IXS has a signal intensity several orders of magnitude smaller than that of elastic X-rays, posing challenges for probing glass structures above 100 GPa near the Earth's core-mantle boundary...

BACKGROUND: Flaxseed orbitides are homodetic plant cyclic peptides arising from ribosomal synthesis and post-translation modification (N to C cyclization), and lacking cysteine double bonds (Nat Prod Rep 30:108-160, 2013). Screening for orbitide composition was conducted on the flax core collection (FCC) grown at both Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and Morden, Manitoba over three growing seasons (2009-2011). Two flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) accessions 'Hollandia' (CN 98056) and 'Z 11637' (CN 98150) produce neither [1-9-NαC]-linusorb B2 (3) nor [1-9-NαC]-linusorb B3 (1)...

The potential of bacteriophage as an alternative antibacterial agent has been reconsidered for control of pathogenic bacteria due to the widespread occurrence of multi-drug resistance bacteria. More and more lytic phages have been isolated recently. In the present study, we isolated a lytic phage named vB_EcoS-B2 from waste water. VB_EcoS-B2 has an icosahedral symmetry head and a long tail without a contractile sheath, indicating that it belongs to the family Siphoviridae . The complete genome of vB_EcoS-B2 is composed of a circular double stranded DNA of 44,283 bp in length, with 54...

Cardiac fibroblasts (CF) are key cells for maintaining extracellular matrix (ECM) protein homeostasis in the heart, and for cardiac repair through CF-to-cardiac myofibroblast (CMF) differentiation. Additionally, CF play an important role in the inflammatory process after cardiac injury, and they express Toll like receptor 4 (TLR4), B1 and B2 bradykinin receptors (B1R and B2R) which are important in the inflammatory response. B1R and B2R are induced by proinflammatory cytokines and their activation by bradykinin (BK: B2R agonist) or des-arg-kallidin (DAKD: B1R agonist), induces NO and PGI2 production which is key for reducing collagen I levels...
