Systematic outcome assessment is central to ascertaining the impact of treatment services and to informing future treatment initiatives. This project was designed to be conducted within the clinical operations of 4 private addictions treatment centers. A structured interview was used to assess patients' alcohol and other drug use and related variables (on treatment entry and at 1, 3, and 6 months following treatment discharge). The primary outcomes were percentage of days abstinent (PDA) from alcohol and drugs, PDA from alcohol, and PDA from other drugs...

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Integration of 12-step philosophy and practices is common in adolescent substance use disorder (SUD) treatment programs, particularly in North America. However, although numerous experimental studies have tested 12-step facilitation (TSF) treatments among adults, no studies have tested TSF-specific treatments for adolescents. We tested the efficacy of a novel integrated TSF. DESIGN: Explanatory, parallel-group, randomized clinical trial comparing 10 sessions of either motivational enhancement therapy/cognitive-behavioral therapy (MET/CBT; n=30) or a novel integrated TSF (iTSF; n=29) with follow-up assessments at 3-, 6-, and 9-months following treatment entry...

In order to meet the increasing demands for effective heat management of electronic devices, graphene based polymeric composite is considered to be one of the candidate materials due to the ultrahigh thermal conductivity of graphene. However, poor graphene dispersion, low quality of exfoliated graphene and strong phonon scattering at graphene/matrix interface restrict the heat dissipation ability of graphene filled composites. Here, a facile and versatile approach to bond graphene foam (GF) with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is proposed and the corresponding composite with considerable improvement of thermal conductivity and insulativity is fabricated...

The garden asparagus stem blight caused by filamentous fungus Phomopsis asparagi exposes a serious threat on asparagus production globally. However, to present, we understand poorly about the molecular mechanisms of fungal pathogenicity. To facilitate functional genomics research of P. asparagi, here we developed a highly efficient and stable Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation approach which yielded 150-200 transformants per 1 × 10(6) conidia. Our results indicated that 25 °C, acetosyringone concentration of 150 μmol/L, and 72 h were recommended as optimal co-cultivation conditions for the transformation...

Nanomedicine has attracted substantial attentions for accurate diagnosis or treatment of carcinoma in recent years. Nd3+ doped lanthanide nanophosphors based near-infrared-II (NIR-II) optical imaging is widely used for deep penetration tissue imaging while X-ray computed tomography (CT) is well-suited for in vivo imaging. Polymer coated lanthanide nanophosphors were increasingly used as both diagnostics and therapies for tumor in vivo. However, the bio-compatibility of nanocomposites and efficiency of tumor ablation should be taken into consideration when construct of a nanotheranostic probe...

REVIEW
William E Benitz, Shazia Bhombal
Over the last four decades, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs have been widely used to induce closure of the patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) in preterm infants. Evidence to support this practice is lacking, despite performance of >50 randomized trials. The credibility of those trials may have been compromised by high rates of open treatment in controls, era of study prior to advent of modern practices, or inclusion of insufficient numbers of very immature infants. Meta-analyses show little impact of those factors on main conclusions...

Regulatory T (Treg) cell infiltration constitutes a prominent feature of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDA). However, the immunomodulatory function of Treg cells in PDA is poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate that Treg cell ablation is sufficient to evoke effective anti-tumor immune response in early and advanced pancreatic tumorigenesis in mice. This response is dependent on interferon-γ (IFN-γ)-producing cytotoxic CD8(+) T cells. We show that Treg cells engage in extended interactions with tumor-associated CD11c(+) dendritic cells (DCs) and restrain their immunogenic function by suppressing the expression of costimulatory ligands necessary for CD8(+) T cell activation...

Antibiotics in water have recently caused increasing concerns for public health and ecological environments. In this work, we demonstrated polydopamine-coated graphene oxide/Fe3O4 (PDA@GO/Fe3O4) imprinted nanoparticles coupled with magnetic separation for fast and selective removal of fluoroquinolone antibiotics in water. The nanoparticles were prepared by the self-polymerization of dopamine using sarafloxacin as a template. The imprinted PDA film of 10~20 nm uniformly covered the surface of GO/Fe3O4 providing selective binding sites...

A case study was performed using photodiode array detection (PDA) in combination with evaporative light scattering (ELS) detection and mass spectrometry (MS) to assess both mass balance and the relative response factors (RRFs) in the forced degradation studies of the drug substance, glimepiride. The RRF value, which is the ratio of the response factor of the impurity to that of the API, was first determined using calibration curves of standards. This conventional technique was compared to a second, multi-detection technique, which used the PDA and ELS detectors to determine both the ultraviolet (UV) peak area and the concentration (based on measurement by ELS) in a single analysis...

The well-known AuAg nanohybrid system was effectively synthesized, utilizing polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) as a multiple metal precursor reducing agent (based solely on their reduction potentials), thereby drastically decreasing their activation energy of diffusion and readily facilitating the homogenous alloy nanoparticle formation, duly confirmed by Vegard's law. Furthermore, the crucial parameters in determining the local electric field enhancement in the vicinity of the alloy nanoparticles such as the quality factor Q, dephasing time, T2 and the homogenous line width Γ were also evaluated in a systematic manner, in correlation with their unique visible optical absorption spectra...
