INTRODUCTION: Gastrointestinal complications are common after solid organ transplantation. New-onset inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) after transplantation (de novo) is a major differential diagnosis of diarrhea after liver transplantation (LT) because of its high incidence in the field. However, the incidence of IBD after kidney transplantation (KT) remains unknown. METHODS: This case series comprised six de novo IBD patients who had undergone KT at our hospital from April 1998 to December 2020...

BACKGROUND: Primary membranous nephropathy (PMN) is an autoimmune glomerular disease. IL-6 is a potential therapeutic target for PMN. Previous clinical studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of Mahuang Fuzi and Shenzhuo Decoction (MFSD) in treating membranous nephropathy. However, the mechanism of action of MFSD remains unclear. METHODS: Serum IL-6 levels were measured in patients with PMN and healthy subjects. The passive Heymann nephritis (PHN) rat model was established, and high and low doses of MFSD were used for intervention to observe the repair effect of MFSD on renal pathological changes and podocyte injury...

Although naturally Streptococcus suis serotype 2 (SS2) causes meningitis resulting in death or sequela of neurological symptoms in pigs and humans, severely threatening public health in the world, it has been difficult to build up and confirm experimental meningitis mouse models with obvious neurological syndrome for about two decades, which strongly hampers the in-depth study on the control measures and mechanisms of SS2-induced meningitis. In this study, a typical meningitis mouse model of SS2 was successfully established, as confirmed by the behavioral indicators of balance beam test, suspension test, and gait analysis...

C4d, a split product of C4 activation in classical and lectin pathways of the complement system activation, has been regarded as a footprint of tissue damage in antibody-mediated rejection in transplantology. The introduction of C4d staining into daily clinical practice aroused an ever-increasing interest in the role of antibody-mediated mechanisms in kidney allograft rejection. However, this marker of complement activation is also important in other various kidney glomerular pathologies such as immunoglobulin A nephropathy, membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis, lupus nephritis, and others...

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a prototypic autoimmune disease that primarily affects young women and causes a wide range of inflammatory manifestations. The hallmark of SLE is the production of antibodies to components of the cell nucleus (antinuclear antibodies or ANAs). These antibodies can bind to DNA, RNA and protein complexes with nucleic acids. Among ANAs, antibodies to DNA (anti-DNA) are markers for classification and disease activity, waxing and waning in many patients. In the blood, anti-DNA antibodies can bind DNA to form immune complexes with two distinct roles in pathogenesis: renal deposition to provoke nephritis and stimulation of cytokine production following uptake into innate immune cells and interaction with internal nucleic acid sensors...

Major reason for mortality among systemic lupus erythematosus patients is renal failure due to the deposition of immune complexes in the glomeruli. Being a chronic disease with multiple relapses and remissions across the lifespan, it's important to know the degree of nephritis for diagnosis as well as the long-term clinical management of the patients. Currently, renal biopsy is being used as the gold standard to diagnose and define the stages of the disease. However, renal biopsy being invasive only provides a localized picture of nephritis, and has the risk of bleeding...

Renal pathology is a relatively recent entry in nephrology. While diseases of the kidney are old, their study began in the 19th century with the report of Richard Bright of the lesions of end-stage kidney disease. Its easy diagnosis from albuminuria soon elevated Bright's nephritis into a leading cause of death. The transformative events in the care of these cases were renal replacement therapy that converted a fatal into a chronic disease, and kidney biopsy that allowed study of the course and pathogenesis of kidney disease...

IgA vasculitis (IgAV) is the most common childhood vasculitis. The main cause of morbidity and mortality in children with IgAV is nephritis (IgAVN), but the risk of its development, severity, and chronicity remain unclear. Erythrocyte glutathione S-transferase (e-GST) activity has been previously detected as a sensitive marker of kidney function impairment in several diseases. We spectrophotometrically assessed and correlated e-GST activity between 55 IgAV patients without nephritis (IgAVwN), 42 IgAVN patients, and 52 healthy controls...

The monocyte-macrophage lineage of inflammatory cells is characterized by significant morphologic and functional plasticity. Macrophages have broad M1 and M2 phenotype subgroups with distinctive functions and dual reno-toxic and reno-protective effects. Macrophages are a major contributor to injury in immune-complex-mediated, as well as pauci-immune, glomerulonephritis. Macrophages are also implicated in tubulointerstitial and vascular disease, though there have not been many human studies. Patrolling monocytes in the intravascular compartment have been reported in auto-immune injury in the renal parenchyma, manifesting as acute kidney injury...
