Over the past 60 years there has been a dramatic increase in the prevalence of overweight in children and adolescents, ranging from 4% in 1975 to 18% in 2016. Recent estimates indicate that overweight or obese children and adolescents are more than 340 million. Obesity is often associated with hypertension, which is an important cardiovascular risk factor. Recent studies show that the presence of hypertension is a frequent finding in the pediatric age. Hypertensive children easily become hypertensive adults...

OBJECTIVE: Introduction:Changes in the cardiovascular system can be divided into 2 groups due to the connective tissue dysplasia (CTD) and changes in the circulatory system, caused by pathological processes that arose on the basis of the connective structures failure. One of the risk factors of arterial hypertension (AH) remaining insufficiently studied is collagen pathology - nondifferentiated connective tissue dysplasia (NCTD). The presence of connective tissue in all organs and systems, the common origin of smooth muscles, blood and lymph from mesenchyma leads to dysplastic changes in any organ and system...

Aims: Arteriosclerosis and arterial stiffness increasing are the basic pathophysiological changes of vascular-related diseases, and also the predictor factors of future cardiovascular events. Plasma biomarkers such as glucose, lipids, Homocysteine (Hcy), N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) have been shown to be involved the development of arteriosclerosis. The present study is a prospective observational and follow-up study of the characteristics of subclinical vascular disease detected by non-invasive methods that can predict progression of clinical overt vascular events in a Chinese population...

Endothelial dysfunction is observed in several cardiovascular diseases, where endothelium-dependent vasodilation is impaired by oxidative stress. However, the time course of endothelial function during the perioperative period of a minor-to-moderate surgery, and the effects of atherosclerotic risk factors and employed general anesthetics on recovery of endothelial function, are unknown. Endothelial function of 30 patients was evaluated as the reactive hyperemia index (RHI) of reactive hyperemia peripheral arterial tonometry...

The role of serum uric acid in coronary artery disease has been extensively investigated. It was suggested that serum uric acid level (SUA) is an independent predictor of endothelial dysfunction and related to coronary artery lesions. However, the relationship between SUA and severity of coronary atherosclerosis evaluated via endothelial dysfunction using peripheral arterial tone (PAT) and the reactive hyperhemia index (RHI) has not been investigated during a first episode of acute coronary syndrome (ACS). The aim of our study was to address this point...

Asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), which is the main endogenous inhibitor of nitric oxide synthase, plays a critical role in the process of endothelial dysfunction. The authors evaluated the association between high plasma ADMA levels in patients with hypertension and the presence of cardiovascular risk factors and the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) and cardiovascular outcomes, including death. The authors evaluated 191 patients with hypertension who were stratified into two groups according to the median value of basal ADMA: those with high levels of plasma ADMA (>0...

Introduction: Methotrexate (MTX) has anti-proliferative and anti-inflammatory effects in psoriasis. Moreover, low doses can reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. It turns out that psoriasis and atherosclerosis have a similar pathogenetic mechanism: the same pro-inflammatory cytokines, Th1 and Th17, are involved in both diseases. Aim: To evaluate the effects of metabolic markers, protective cytokines (interleukin 10 (IL-10), transforming growth factor β (TGF-β)) and a marker of endothelial damage (endocan) in patients with plaque psoriasis...

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors have emerged as a promising drug class for the treatment of diabetic kidney disease. Developed originally as glucose-lowering drugs by enhancing urinary glucose excretion, these drugs also lower many other renal and cardiovascular risk factors such as body weight, blood pressure, albuminuria, and uric acid. Results from the EMPA-REG OUTCOME and CANVAS trials show that these salutary effects translate into a reduction in cardiovascular outcomes and have the potential to delay the progression of kidney function decline...

Serum uric acid level is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, whether it is an independent risk factor or not remains controversial. We analyzed the association between serum uric acid level and cardiovascular risk. In total, 973 nonhypertensive and nondiabetic participants in the I-Lan Longitudinal Aging Study were eligible for this study. Subjects were divided into tertiles according to uric acid levels. The 10-year cardiovascular risk was calculated using Framingham risk score (FRS). Study subjects in the highest tertile of serum uric acid level were older, more likely to be male, and had higher systolic blood pressure, body mass index, carotid artery intima-media thickness and serum triglyceride, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and lower serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels (all p < 0...

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Elevated serum uric acid (UA) was intimately correlated with vascular stiffness and abnormal ankle brachial index (ABI) in various populations. These correlations lost significance after adjustment for estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), indicating that the association of UA and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) or ABI might be driven by kidney function. UA is predominantly eliminated through the kidneys, and metabolic disorders can influence the clearance of UA...

The prevalence of kidney stones and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are increasing throughout the world. Both diseases are chronic and characterized by accumulation of oxidized proteins and lipids in the renal tissue and arterial wall, respectively. Emerging studies have revealed a positive association between nephrolithiasis and CVDs. Based on preclinical and clinical evidences, this review discusses: (i) stone forming risk factors, crystal nucleation, aggregation, injury-induced crystal retention, and stone formation, (ii) CVD risk factors such as dyslipidemia, perturbation of gut microbiome, obesity, free radical-induced lipoprotein oxidation, and retention in the arterial wall, subsequent foam cell formation, and atherosclerosis, (iii) mechanism by which stone forming risk factors such as oxalate, calcium, uric acid, and infection contribute toward CVDs, and (iv) how CVD risk factors, such as cholesterol, phospholipids, and uric acid, contribute to kidney stone formation are described...

BACKGROUND: High serum uric acid (SUA) is associated with the dyslipidemia, but whether hyperuricemia predicts an increase in serum low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol is unknown. This study is to evaluate whether an elevated SUA predicts the development of high LDL cholesterol as well as hypertriglyceridemia. METHODS: This is a retrospective 5-year cohort study of 6476 healthy Japanese adults (age, 45.7 ± 10.1 years; 2.243 men) who underwent health examinations at 2004 and were reevaluated in 2009 at St...
