Anabolic Androgenic Steroids (AASs) misuse has increased among adolescents and recreational athletes due to their potential effects on muscle hypertrophy. On the other hand, AAS might induce alterations on cardiovascular system, although some controversies regarding AAS on vascular properties remain unknown. To address this question, we aimed to investigate the effects of high doses of nandrolone combined with strenuous resistance training (RT) on function and structure of thoracic aorta. Rats were randomized into four groups: non-trained vehicle (NTV), trained vehicle (TV), non-trained nandrolone (NTN), and trained nandrolone (TN), and submitted to 6 weeks of treatment with nandrolone (5mg/kg, twice a week) and/or resistance training...

We report a case of a 26-year-old man with no significant medical history, who presented with fatigue, pruritus, jaundice, dark urine and clay colored stool for one month. He had been taking methyl-1-etiochoenolol-epietiocholanolone, an androgenic anabolic steroid (AAS). He was initially found to have a total bilirubin (Tbili) of 6 mg/dL. He discontinued the AAS but the patients' symptoms worsened and Tbili increased to 36 mg/d. This prompted inpatient management of his drug-induced liver injury (DILI). Molecular adsorbent recirculating system (MARS) is an extracorporeal liver support system that replaces the detoxification function of the liver...

BACKGROUND & AIMS: There have been increasing reports of liver injury associated with use of herbal and dietary supplements, likely due to easy access to these products and beliefs among consumers that they are safer or more effective than conventional medications. We aimed to evaluate clinical features and outcomes of patients with herbal and dietary supplement-induced liver injuries included in the Spanish DILI Registry. METHODS: We collected and analyzed data on demographic and clinical features, along with biochemical parameters, of 32 patients with herbal and dietary supplement-associated liver injury reported to the Spanish DILI registry from 1994 through 2016...

The steroid profile (SP) is a powerful tool to detect the misuse of endogenous anabolic androgenic steroids in sports, and it is included in the athlete biological passport (ABP). Glucocorticoids (GCs), which are widely prescribed in sports and are only prohibited in competition by systemic routes, inhibit the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. Since the metabolites monitored in the SP have a partial adrenal origin, their excretion in urine might be altered by GCs consumption. The aim of the present work was to investigate if GCs administered by either systemic or local routes could influence the SP parameters...

Hepatic adenomatosis is a benign disease defined as the presence of multiple adenomas in a normal liver. It is an uncommon condition and there are less than a hundred reported cases in the literature. The etiology is unknown, although it has been associated with the use of oral contraceptives, anabolic steroids, certain storage diseases and some genetic mutations linked to maturity onset diabetes of the young. The coexistence of hepatic adenomatosis and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis has been recently described in two patients suffering from metabolic syndrome...

Anabolic androgenic steroids (AASs) and structural-like substances are commonly prohibited substances found in doping control studies that can be difficult to accurately detect. In the present study, 11 AASs and 2 structural-like substances that are commonly detected were examined. Currently, such analytes are detected using low resolution GC-MS/MS or LC-MS/MS, with detection not always possible. Herein, the high resolution Quadrupole-Orbitrap liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS system Q Exactive was utilized to increase the specificity...

BACKGROUND: Anabolic-androgenic steroid abuse is implicated in maladaptive behaviors such as impaired cognition in humans. In a rat model, our lab has shown that testosterone decreases preference for a large/uncertain reward in probability discounting. Other studies have shown that androgens decrease dopamine D1 and D2 receptors in the nucleus accumbens shell, a region important for decision-making behavior in probability discounting. Thus, we attempted to restore selection of the large/uncertain reward in testosterone-treated rats by administering the D2 receptor agonist quinpirole or the D1 receptor agonist SKF81297 and testing probability discounting...

Background: Anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) are synthetic drugs derived from testosterone, the uncontrolled usage of which may lead to serious side effects. Previous studies have shown that resistance training (RT) is the main exercise modality practiced by AAS abusers. Thus, this work was carried out to evaluate the hepatotoxic effects of sustanon (Su) as an example of AAS in trained male rats. Methods: Rats were divided into sedentary/non-Su, sedentary/Su, RT/non-Su, and RT/Su...

BACKGROUND: There is a perception that the prevalence of anabolic-androgenic steroid (AAS) use is increasing in the UK, with consequent individual and public health risks. Nevertheless, there is a lack of real-time surveillance data to support the development of effective policy. This paper explores the potential of Google Trends to complement existing surveillance methods by analysing user generated search term data. METHODS: The Google Trends web tool was used to identify patterns of UK online interest in 15 AAS from January 2011 to December 2015, with 10 ultimately suitable for further analysis...

The abuse of psychoactive drugs is considered a global health problem. During the last years, a relevant number of studies have investigated the relationship between anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) and other psychoactive drugs. AAS, such as testosterone, can cause a dependence syndrome that shares many features with the classical dependence to psychoactive substances. Pre-clinical evidence shows that there are interactions between testosterone and psychoactive drugs, such as cocaine. However, few studies have been performed to investigate the effect of repeated testosterone treatment on behavioral effects of amphetamine derivatives, such as fenproporex...

Anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) and other hormones such as growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) have been shown to increase muscle mass in patients suffering from various diseases related to muscle atrophy. Despite known side-effects associated with supraphysiologic doses of such drugs, their anabolic effects have led to their widespread use and abuse by bodybuilders and athletes such as strength athletes seeking to improve performance and muscle mass. On the other hand, resistance training (RT) has also been shown to induce significant endogenous hormonal (testosterone (T), GH, IGF-1) elevations...

The important role of microfilaria (worms) in human and animal disease remains an area of key disagreement between the naturopathic and allopathic physicians. While microfilaria infections are rampart in undeveloped countries, they rarely rise to identification as a cause of disease in Western countries. New research studies in the diagnosis and treatment of SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth) and (IBD) Inflammatory Bowel Diseases of ulcerative colitis, Crohn's Disease and microcytic colitis may make both sides equally correct...

BACKGROUND: Frequent non-medicated use of anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) is an instance of substance abuse which mimics the status of a natural hormone and upon prolonged exposure may lead to adverse drug reactions. These adverse drug reactions proceed in a manner so as to alter the normal metabolism of an enzyme mediated pathway such as the cytochrome P450 (CYP) family of enzymes. OBJECTIVE: The present study was conducted to investigate the impact of overuse of Nandrolone Decanoate (ND), an AAS, upon CYP enzyme activity and a CYP gene, belonging to CYP1 family...

An important potential consequence of the anabolic steroid misuse is hypogonadotropic hypogonadism due to the inhibition of pituitary secretion of gonadotropins. By the symptoms as testicular atrophy, spermatogenic and fertility disturbances or dysfunction in sexual life, the anabolic steroids induced hypogonadism (ASIH) could be differentiated from organic hypogonadotropic hypogonadism only with difficulty unless the misuse is reported by the user. When diagnosed, the crucial step in the therapy is the stop of anabolic use...
