Severe tracheal deviation detected on preoperative chest radiographs is one of the risk factors for difficult tracheal intubation and difficulty in ventilation using an endotracheal tube after tracheal intubation when managing the airway through tracheal intubation under general anesthesia. In this report, we describe the cadaver of an 81-year-old woman with marked tracheal deviation due to meandering multiple aortas. This report details the importance of anatomical knowledge in developing a detailed airway management plan...

BACKGROUND: There have been no reports on the successful implementation of stellate ganglion block (SGB) in mice. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to investigate a new method for implementing SGB in mice by placing them in a supine position with abducted upper limbs and touching the trachea and sternoclavicular joint with the hand. METHODS: Fifty BABL/C mice, 8-10 weeks, were selected and randomly divided into four groups: control group (n = 5); SGB-R group (n = 15); SGB-L group (n = 15); and SGB-L + R (group n = 15)...

Infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) strains of genotype GVIII have been emerging in Europe in the last decade, but no biological characterisation has been reported so far. This paper reports the extensive genetic and biological characterization of IBV strain D2860 of genotype GVIII that was isolated from a Dutch layer flock that showed a drop in egg production. Whole genome sequencing showed that it has a high similarity (95%) to CK/DE/IB80/2016 (commonly known as IB80). Cross-neutralization tests with antigens and serotype-specific antisera of a panel different non-GVIII genotypes consistently gave less than 2% antigenic cross-relationship with D2860...

Tracheal stenosis post intubation is one of the most common complication for which resection and anastomosis is done. Here we present a 21 year male patient who was intubated post organophosphorous poisoning. Diagnosed with tracheal stenosis post intubation and managed with tracheal resection and anastomosis with uneventful recovery. Post intubation tracheal stenosis is one of the serious complications and requires a multidisciplinary team and high volume centre for adequate management. Considering the fact that this case report has tracheal stenosis of grade IV type with resected length of tracheal cartilage of more than 3 cm and trachea- tracheal anastomosis makes this a rare case report...

OBJECTIVE: Anastomotic complications after tracheal resection/cricotracheal resection (TR/CTR), such as granulation tissue formation, can lead to severe morbidity. The off-label use of nebulized ciprofloxacin-dexamethasone (Ciprodex) for granulation tissue prophylaxis has anecdotally been used after TR/CTR, especially in pediatric patients. However, its use in the adult population, and its safety and side effect profile post-TR/CTR has not been reported. This study aims to characterize the incidence of adverse side effects associated with nebulized Ciprodex in post-TR/CTR patients...

BACKGROUND: Congenital malformations of the trachea are rare but often life-threatening. Limited data have been published on the outcomes of tracheal reconstruction for congenital tracheal stenosis. We sought to describe the outcomes of patients undergoing tracheal reconstruction over 10 years at our centre. METHODS: All paediatric patients who underwent long-segment tracheal or bronchial reconstruction from January 1, 2012, to August 31, 2022, were included. The primary outcome was mortality, and secondary outcomes included reoperation and postoperative morbidity...

INTRODUCTION: End-tidal CO2 (ETCO2) detector is currently recommended for confirmation of endotracheal tube placement during neonatal resuscitation. Whether it is feasible to use ETCO2 detectors during mask ventilation to reduce risk of bradycardia and desaturations, which are associated with increased risk of death in preterm babies, is unknown. METHODS: This is a pilot randomized controlled trial (NCT04287907) involving newborns 24 + 0/7 to 32 + 0/7 weeks gestation who required mask ventilation at birth...

The treatment of long-tracheal lesion is difficult because there are currently no viable grafts for tracheal replacement. To solve this problem, we have developed an autologous Tissue-Engineered Trachea (aTET), which is made up of collagenous tissues and cartilage-like structures derived from rat chondrocytes. This graft induced successful long-term survival in a small-animal experiment in our previous study. In this study, we investigated the regeneration process of an aTET to attain reproducible success. We prepared an aTET by using a specially designed mold and performed patch tracheoplasty with an aTET...

OBJECTIVES: Tracheal reconstruction post-extensive resection remains an unresolved challenge in thoracic surgery. This study evaluates the use of aortic allografts (AAs) for tracheal replacement and reconstruction in a rat model, aiming to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of tracheal regeneration. METHODS: AAs from female rats were employed for tracheal reconstruction in 36 male rats, with the replacement exceeding half of the tracheal length. To avert collapse, silicone stents were inserted into the AA lumens...

INTRODUCTION: With its introduction in 1986, the use of metal tracheal stents gained favor due to relative ease of deployment and reduced risk of stent migration and mucus plugging. However, adverse events associated with metal stenting led the FDA to publish a recommendation against its use for benign airway stenosis in 2005. We present a case which illustrates the difficulty in removal of a metal stent from the airway. CASE REPORT: Our patient is a 47-year-old woman with a history of postintubation tracheal stenosis...

OBJECTIVES: Medical therapies to limit disease recurrence are critically needed for recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP). Systemic bevacizumab is emerging as an exciting adjuvant therapy toward this end, but uptake has been poor due to the lack of experience and awareness of best prescribing practices. The objective of this study was to describe a single tertiary care academic medical center's experience using systemic bevacizumab for the treatment of RRP. METHODS: A retrospective review was performed to identify patients with RRP on systemic bevacizumab...

OBJECTIVES: Hematologic malignancy involving the trachea is rare. It is even less common for tracheal involvement to be the initial manifestation of this disease. We present a case report highlighting an unusual diagnosis of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) that first presented with prominent tracheal manifestations. There have been only three other published case reports of extramedullary AML with involvement of the trachea. METHODS: We discuss direct laryngoscopy and bronchoscopy findings, including pinkish-white irregular lesions, which were similar to findings described in the available literature for tracheal AML...

Ammonia (NH3 ) is a toxic gas that in intensive poultry houses, damages the poultry health and induces various diseases. This study investigated the effects of NH3 exposure (0, 15, 30, and 45 ppm) on growth performance, serum biochemical indexes, antioxidative indicators, tracheal and lung impairments in Pekin ducks. A total of 288 one-day-old Pekin male ducks were randomly allocated to 4 groups with 6 replicates and slaughtered after the 21-d test period. Our results showed that 45 ppm NH3 significantly reduced the average daily feed intake (ADFI) of Pekin ducks...

Prediction of refractory/relapse events in PTL patients is an essential issue, yet no ultrasonic PTL features have been discovered to be related to refractory/local relapse events. The insect cuticle is a non-cellular matrix composed of polysaccharide chitins and proteins. The cuticle covers most of the body surface, including the trachea, foregut, and hindgut, and it is the body structure that separates the intraluminal environment from the external environment. The cuticle is essential to sustain their lives, both as a physical barrier to maintain homeostasis and as an exoskeleton that mechanically supports body shape and movement. Previously, we proposed a theory about the possibility that the cuticle-forming system contributes to the "evolution and success of insects...

BACKGROUND: Malignant esophageal stent esophagorespiratory fistula (ERF) is an abnormal communication between esophagus and airway among advanced tumor patients with indwelling esophageal stent, which is devastating and life-threatening. This study aims to provide a new feasible treatment scheme for malignant esophageal stent ERF and report its potential advantage compared with double stenting, which was recommended by European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Guideline.
