It is uncommon to observe a nonunion of an isolated ulnar shaft fracture after surgical treatment; therefore, complications due to this nonunion are very rare. Adults are more likely to develop nonunions compared to children. We report the case of a 34-year-old man, who had a left ulnar shaft fracture, treated with a screwed plate. Four months later, a septic nonunion occurred causing a type 3 Monteggia equivalent lesion with a lateral dislocation of the radial head. We describe the consecutive methods of treatment that resulted in complete bone consolidation...

PURPOSE: The purpose of this systematic review is to examine the outcomes, complications, and potential advantages of using anatomical interlocking intramedullary nails (IMN) in the treatment of radius and ulnar shaft diaphyseal fractures in adults. METHODS: Medline, Embase, Web of Science, and Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) databases were searched between January 2000 and January 2023. Studies meeting criteria were observational or randomized controlled trials evaluating outcomes in IMN for adult diaphyseal forearm fractures...

BACKGROUND: Teriparatide, a recombinant parathyroid hormone, is pivotal in osteoporosis treatment, particularly in post-surgical recovery for hip fractures. This study investigates its efficacy in functional recovery post-hip fracture surgery in elderly patients, a demographic particularly susceptible to osteoporotic fractures. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, 150 elderly patients with proximal femoral fractures undergoing open reduction and internal fixation were enrolled...

Efficient degradation of organic pollutants in complex media via advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) is still critical and challenging. Herein, nitrogen (N)-doped coal gangue (CG) catalysts (N-CG) with economic competitiveness and environmental friendliness were successfully synthesized to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS), exhibiting ultrafast degradation performance toward benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) with 100.00 % and 93.21 % in contaminated solution and soil under optimized condition, respectively. Postoperative wound infections (PWIs) following open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) for elbow fractures can significantly affect patient outcomes. Identifying associated risk factors is crucial for improving clinical practices and patient care. A retrospective analysis (June 2020-June 2023) at our institution involved 90 patients who underwent elbow ORIF. Thirty patients developed PWIs (case group), compared to 60 who did not (control group). Variables like anaemia, operation duration, hospital stay, blood loss, body mass index (BMI), age, hypoalbuminemia, smoking status, diabetes mellitus and open fractures were examined...

Delayed fracture healing can have devastating functional consequences, including pseudoarthrosis. Many factors can contribute to delayed healing, including decreased vascularity, micro-motion at the fracture site, large fracture gaps, multiple traumas at the same site, compromised metabolic status, surgical complications, and other conditions. A 61-year-old female patient was referred to our hospital with left distal humeral pseudarthrosis, accompanied by chronic pain and disability. Two years prior, the patient suffered a traumatic incident...

Background : The external fixation (EF) Ilizarov method, shown to offer efficacy and relative safety, has unique biomechanical properties. Intramedullary nail fixation (IMN) is an advantageous alternative, offering biomechanical stability and a minimally invasive procedure. The aim of this study was to assess outcomes in patients undergoing tibia fracture fixation, comparing the Ilizarov EF and IMN methods in an early phase of IMN implementation in Serbia. Methods: This was a retrospective study including patients with radiologically confirmed closed and open (Gustilo and Anderson type I) tibial diaphysis fractures treated at the Institute for Orthopedic Surgery "Banjica'' from January 2013 to June 2017...

Over the last 50 years the significance of Galen's contributions to the arts of medicine and surgery have been increasingly recognized. Despite his errors, his contributions to medical and surgical practice have been profound. In the present context, his teachings on cranial surgical instruments and technique would continue to be influential throughout one and a half millenia. His technical advice was sound. His error about the anatomy of blood vessels supplying CNS were not of much consequence since the CNS would remain surgically inaccessible until the end of the 19th century...

The chapter begins with a review of some of the background thinking during Hippocrates time. The brain was considered to be the location of the soul which was the essence of subjective experience. However, this was not a brain function as such but rather a location where the pneuma reacted with the soul. Hippocrates' monograph on cranial trauma begins with a description of the bones and sutures. He then systematized the classification of cranial injury. He sensibly advised accurate diagnosis into one of the types of injury he described and supported extension of any skin opening to facilitate diagnosis of the bone, the injury of which was his primary concern...

Fractures of the metacarpal particularly the 5th metacarpal is quite common among all hand fractures and has a high incidence in male adult population. Proper management of these fractures plays a key role in rehabilitation and early return to work thus reducing the economic burden. Treatment of these injuries depends on the type of injury: whether it is a closed/open fracture, degree of angulation at the fracture site and also mal-rotation and shortening of the finger. Non-operative management is suitable for fractures which are closed, non-displaced and without angulation or rotation...

BACKGROUND: Coronal shear fractures of the distal humerus are not only rare and prone to misdiagnosis, but their surgical treatment can be challenging. We aimed to investigate the feasibility of exposing distal humeral coronal shear fractures with a combined lateral approach that preserves the extensors and lateral ulnar collateral ligament (LUCL) and to analyze the clinical efficacy of open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) in the treatment of these injuries. METHODS: We included 45 patients who sustained coronal shear fractures of the distal humerus with the lateral epicondyle intact and were treated with ORIF from January 2013 to August 2020...

Poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) bone cement is widely used in orthopedic surgeries, including total hip/knee arthroplasty and vertebral compression fracture treatment. However, loosening due to bone resorption is a common mid-to-late complication. Therefore, developing bioactive bone cement that promotes bone growth and integration is key to reducing aseptic loosening. In this study, we developed a piezoelectric bone cement comprising PMMA and BaTiO3 with excellent electrobioactivity and further analyzed its ability to promote bone integration...

An open reduction-internal fixation is generally recommended in Type I lateral process fractures of the talus when the dislocation of the fragment is >2 mm. This report describes a case of a lateral process fracture of the talus in a 24-year-old male basketball player who underwent arthroscopic reduction-internal fixation. The patient complained of pain on the lateral aspect of his left ankle during a cutting motion. Based on physical examination and radiological findings, the patient was diagnosed with a lateral process fracture of the talus and underwent surgical treatment with arthroscopic reduction-internal fixation...

This review examines the prevailing modalities for fractures of the anterior mandible, which represent a significant proportion of the maxillofacial injuries commonly treated by oral and maxillofacial surgeons. The article traces the historical shift from conservative techniques to the dominant management strategies of open reduction and fixation. Encompassing a range of studies, the review, in accordance with PRISMA 2020 recommendations, meticulously examines various fixation methods, assessing their efficacy in achieving stability of fracture, early healing, and mobilisation...

BACKGROUND: Although the concept of the "fix and flap" approach, in which definitive fracture fixation and flap coverage are completed in a single procedure at the earliest opportunity may seem ideal for the treatment of Gustilo type IIIB open fractures, the individual circumstances of patients, such as polytrauma or multiple fracture cases may not allow for the immediate fracture fixation and flap coverage ("fix and flap" approach). In our hospital, patients with Gustilo type IIIB open fractures are treated with definitive internal fixation of the fracture followed by staged flap coverage ("fix followed by flap" protocol) when the "fix and flap" approach was not feasible due to the patient's condition or difficulty in coordinating surgery schedules...
