BACKGROUND: Double-lumen tubes (DLTs) are the preferred device for lung isolation. Conventional DLTs (cDLT) need a bronchoscopic position control. Visualisation of correct DLT positioning could be facilitated by the use of a video double-lumen tube (vDLT). During the SARS-CoV-2-pandemic, avoiding aerosol-generation was suggesting using this device. In a large retrospective series, we report both general and pandemic related experiences with the device. METHODS: All anesthesia records from patients aged 18 years or older undergoing surgery from April 1st, 2020 to December 31st, 2021 in the department of thoracic surgery requiring intraoperative lung isolation were analyzed retrospectively...

OBJECTIVE: To assess the intraoperative use of 3-dimensional transesophageal echocardiography (3D TEE) in cardiac surgical centers, the authors created a survey aimed at evaluating the availability of equipment and the use of 3D TEE for specific surgical and interventional procedures and single-image modalities. The respondents were asked to identify the perceived impact on patient management and current limitations to its routine use. DESIGN: A multiple choice 25-question online survey submitted to the members of the European Association of Cardiothoracic Anesthesia and Intensive Care (EACTAIC) on December 6, 2021, and closed on January 31, 2022...

BACKGROUND: Patient-centered outcome measures should be evaluated postoperatively as the recovery after surgery varies between patients. We aimed to evaluate the feasibility, reliability, and trajectory of the quality of recovery-15 (QoR-15) in patients undergoing cardiothoracic and aortic surgeries. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included adult patients who underwent elective cardiothoracic and aortic surgeries. The primary outcome was the QoR-15, with a minimal clinically important difference of 6...

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Anxiety plays a distressing role in cardiothoracic operations. It may trigger hemodynamic instability, increased morbidity, and very crucially, postoperative pain and analgesic use. Our aim is to look at the association between anxiety, postoperative pain, and analgesic use. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred and twenty-two patients scheduled for cardiothoracic surgeries were asked questions according to the Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale (APAIS), the evening prior to the surgery...

OBJECTIVES: Despite significant improvement in patient blood management, cardiac surgery remains a high hemorrhagic risk procedure. Platelet transfusion is used commonly to treat thrombocytopenia-associated perioperative bleeding. Allogeneic platelet transfusion may induce transfusion-related immunomodulation. However, its association with postoperative healthcare-associated infections is still a matter of debate. The objective was to evaluate the impact of allogeneic platelet transfusion during cardiac surgery on postoperative healthcare-associated infection incidence...

OBJECTIVES: Perioperative bleeding poses a significant issue during thoracic surgery. Tranexamic acid (TXA) is one of the most commonly used antifibrinolytic agents for surgical patients. The purpose of the current study was designed to investigate the efficacy and safety of TXA in patients undergoing thoracic surgery. METHODS: An extensive search of PubMed, Web of Science (WOS), Cochrane Library (trials), Embase, OVID, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang, and VIP electronic databases was performed to identify studies published between the inception of these databases and March 2023...

Patient blood management (PBM) guidelines for patients undergoing cardiac surgery under cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) have increased during the past decade, and pharmacotherapy plays an important role in PBM. In the face of the undefined consistency in the methodologic quality and pharmacotherapy recommendations across multiple guidelines, this study exclusively evaluated methodologies of the related guideline development process, and compiled medication recommendations of PBM for cardiac surgery patients. PBM guidelines for cardiac surgery under CPB were searched through some mainstream literature and guideline databases from database establishment to May 15, 2023...

OBJECTIVE: Tracheal intubation in cardiac surgery patients has a higher incidence of difficult laryngoscopic views compared with patients undergoing other types of surgery. The authors hypothesized that using the McGrath Mac videolaryngoscope as the first intubation option for cardiac surgery patients improves the percentage of patients with "easy intubation" compared with using a direct Macintosh laryngoscope. Consensus statements recommend the use of norepinephrine and/or vasopressin for hypotension in cardiac surgery. However, there is a paucity of data among other surgical subgroups and vasopressin analogs. Therefore, the authors conducted a systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to compare vasopressin-receptor agonists with norepinephrine for hypotension among those undergoing surgery with general anesthesia. This review was registered prospectively (CRD42022316328). Literature searches were conducted by a medical librarian to November 28, 2023, across MEDLINE, EMBASE, CENTRAL, and Web of Science...
