Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) is a rapidly expanding field. Physicians who practice PM&R are known as physiatrists and provide care primarily for patients who have disabilities or physical impairments affecting the musculoskeletal system, brain, and spinal cord. Physiatrists may work in an inpatient or outpatient setting, with outpatient physiatrists being an invaluable resource in treating patients experiencing pain. It is worthwhile to refer patients experiencing hip, knee, or back pain to a PM&R specialist because of their skill in making specific and accurate diagnoses, as well as providing a wide range of modalities to treat pain and augment function such as management of pain medications, osteopathic manipulative therapy, trigger point injections, intra-articular steroid injections, orthobiologic therapy, and interventional spinal procedures...

In the United States, the 40 colleges of osteopathic medicine and 157 schools of allopathic medicine face challenges in recruiting candidates who are underrepresented in medicine (URiM), and gaps in racial disparity appear to be widening. In this commentary, the authors provide an analysis of the data collected from 8 years of conducting a URiM recruitment and welcoming social events. The event is sponsored by a student special interest group called Creating Osteopathic Minority Physicians Who Achieve Scholastic Success (COMPASS) at the Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine - New York (TouroCOM-NY)...

BACKGROUND: There are no uniform regulations for the osteopathic profession in Europe. It is subject to country-specific regulations defining who shall be allowed to practice osteopathy and which qualification shall be required. In recent years, legal regulations have been established in several European countries for the profession of osteopathy; however, these are also still pending for Austria. Currently, physiotherapists and physicians with osteopathic training are practicing osteopathy in Austria...

Background While the prevalence of mental health conditions is similar in rural areas and non-rural areas, access to mental health care is more limited in rural areas. Patient attitudes toward specific mental health treatment options in rural populations have been understudied. Some previous studies indicate potential positive outcomes using osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) as an adjunct for mental health care. Physicians using OMT are more heavily represented in rural areas. Hence, understanding the mental health treatment needs and option preferences of the rural could inform policies that increase underserved population's access to various mental health treatment modalities including OMT...

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term effects of adding osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) to neck exercises compared to exercises alone for individuals with non-specific chronic neck pain (NCNP). METHODS: A randomized controlled trial was conducted by assigning 90 individuals with NCNP into the following 2 groups: (1) exercises group (EG, n = 45) or (2) OMT plus exercises group (OMT/EG, n = 45). All participants received 4 weeks of treatment...

CONTEXT: Faculty productivity is of interest for hospital and university administrators as pressure is placed on them by government and private payors. Further, the effect of trainees on clinical productivity is of personal interest to physicians because their performance evaluations and earning potential are often tied to their productivity. Several groups have utilized creative methodology to study the effect of learners on emergency department (ED) productivity, but they were faced with multiple confounding variables for which it was difficult to adjust...

CONTEXT: Medical school graduates are generally not well prepared to treat patients with substance use disorders (SUDs), even though opioid overdose deaths in the United States have increased in recent years. When it comes to training in SUDs, osteopathic medicine lags far behind allopathic medicine. It was only in 2019 that the American Osteopathic Association approved Board Certification in Addiction Medicine to help combat the opioid epidemic. Few articles have been published in the literature pertaining to substance use education for osteopathic students and trainees...

Objective A previous study at this institution revealed a connection between interest group involvement and specialty interest while identifying the negative perceptions of cardiothoracic (CT) surgery. This study aimed to build interest and ameliorate the negative perceptions of CT surgery by exposing pre-clinical students to the field through engaging events. CONTEXT: General neck pain is a prevalent complaint made by patients to their physicians and is often of a suspected musculoskeletal origin. Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) is a form of manual therapy utilized by osteopathic physicians and some allopathic physicians to treat a broad variety of musculoskeletal ailments, including neck pain. BACKGROUND: In the United States, osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT), is a popular complementary physical health approach for the treatment of neuromusculoskeletal disorders. However, post-OMT adverse events (AEs) are poorly defined in terms of frequency, severity, and temporal evolution. To date, no benchmark for patient safety exists. To improve understanding in this field, we set out to model the landscape of patient harm after OMT. METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive search of all available primary clinical research studies reporting on the occurrence of post-OMT AEs in nonpregnant, adult outpatients treated by an osteopathic physician in the United States...
