BACKGROUND: Valproic acid (VPA) is a relatively safe drug widely used for the treatment of epileptic seizures and mania in bipolar disorder, as well as the prevention of migraine headaches. Here, we present a case of VPA-induced pancreatitis in a patient with vascular dementia, epileptic seizures, and psychiatric symptoms. He had no distinctive abdominal symptoms. CASE PRESENTATION: A 66-year-old Japanese man was treated with VPA for agitation and violent behavior due to vascular dementia, epileptic seizures, and psychiatric symptoms...

Cannabidiol is used in the care of treatment-resistant epilepsy. It has been associated with varying side effects, ranging from somnolence to diarrhea and weight loss. We present a patient on chronic cannabidiol therapy who had persistent diarrhea, abdominal pain, weight loss, and esophageal eosinophilia that improved with cannabidiol dose adjustment.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to identify corticothalamic areas and electrical stimulation paradigms that optimally enhance breathing. METHODS: Twenty-nine patients with medically intractable epilepsy were prospectively recruited in an epilepsy monitoring unit while undergoing stereoelectroencephalographic evaluation. Direct electrical stimulation in cortical and thalamic regions was carried out using low (<1 Hz) and high (≥10 Hz) frequencies, and low (<5 mA) and high (≥5 mA) current intensities, with pulse width of ...

Baraitser-Winter syndrome (BRWS) is a rare autosomal dominant disease (AD) caused by heterozygous variants in ACTB (BRWS1) or ACTG1 (BRWS2) genes. BRWS features developmental delay/intellectual disability of variable degree and craniofacial dysmorphisms. Brain abnormalities (especially pachygyria), microcephaly, epilepsy, as well as hearing impairment, cardiovascular and genitourinary abnormalities may be present. We report on a 4-year-old female, who was addressed to our institution because of psychomotor delay associated with microcephaly and dysmorphic features, short stature, mild bilateral sensorineural hearing loss, mild cardiac septal hypertrophy, and abdominal swelling...

BACKGROUND: There is increasing interest in the validation of pediatric preference-based health-related quality of life measurement instruments. It is critical that children with various degrees of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) impact are included in validation studies. To inform patient sample selection for validation studies from a pragmatic perspective, this study explored HRQoL impairments between known-groups and HRQoL changes over time across 27 common chronic child health conditions and identified conditions with the largest impact on HRQoL...

Blunt abdominal trauma is associated with a variety of medical complications. Traumatic abdominal wall hernias (TAWHs) are a rare sequela of blunt trauma. Of the various forms of TAWH, a rare subtype described as a "spontaneous lateral ventral hernia" or flank hernia occurs in less than 1% of all blunt abdominal traumas. We present a case of a 39-year-old male with a past medical history of epilepsy who was involved in a rollover motor vehicle collision. It was reported that the patient had a seizure while driving...

Refractory status epilepticus is commonly defined as status epilepticus that fails to respond to two or more appropriately dosed intravenous anti-seizure medications including at least one non-benzodiazepine drug. Super-refractory status epilepticus (SRSE) is when status epilepticus continues for ≥24 h despite anesthetic treatment or recurs on an attempted wean of the anesthetic drugs. There is little evidence to guide the management of SRSE. Of late, unconventional therapies have been described in the literature regarding the management of SRSE, with ketamine leading the pack...

Because realgar contains arsenic, chronic or excessive use of single-flavor realgar and realgar-containing Chinese patent medicine can lead to drug-induced arsenic poisoning, but the exact mechanism underlying its toxicity to the central nervous system is unclear...

The brain and the gut are linked together with a complex, bi-path link known as the gut-brain axis through the central and enteric nervous systems. So, the brain directly affects and controls the gut through various neurocrine and endocrine processes, and the gut impacts the brain via different mechanisms. Epilepsy is a central nervous system (CNS) disorder with abnormal brain activity, causing repeated seizures due to a transient excessive or synchronous alteration in the brain's electrical activity. Due to the strong relationship between the enteric and the CNS, gastrointestinal dysfunction may increase the risk of epilepsy...

Age-related neurological disorders [AND] include neurodegenerative diseases [NDDs] such as Alzheimer's disease [AD] and Parkinson's disease [PD], which are the most prevalent types of dementia in the elderly. It also includes other illnesses such as migraine and epilepsy. ANDs are multifactorial, but aging is their major risk factor. The most frequent and vital pathological features of AND are oxidative stress, inflammation, and accumulation of misfolded proteins. As AND brain damage is a significant public health burden and its incidence is increasing, much has been done to overcome it...

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is often associated with several intestinal and/or metabolic disorders as well as neurological manifestations such as epilepsy (ASD-E). Those presenting these neuropathological conditions share common aspects in terms of gut microbiota composition. The use of microbiota intervention strategies may be an approach to consider in the management of these cases. We describe the case of a 17-year-old girl affected by ASD, reduced growth, neurological development delay, mutations in the PGM1 and EEF1A2 genes (in the absence of clinically manifested disease) and, intestinal disorders such as abdominal pain and diarrhea associated with weight loss...

Multimodal polygraphy including cardiorespiratory monitoring in the Epilepsy Monitoring is becoming increasingly important. In addition to simultaneous recording of video and EEG, the combination of these techniques not only improves seizure detection, it enhances patient safety and provides information on autonomic clinical symptoms, which may be contributory to localization of seizure foci. However, there are currently no consensus guidelines, nor adequate information on devices available for multimodal polygraphy for cardiorespiratory monitoring in the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit...

Benzodiazepines, psychotropics drugs used for treating sleep disorders, anxiety and epilepsy, represent a major class of emerging water pollutants. As occurs for other pharmaceutical residues, they are not efficiently degraded during sewage treatment and persist in effluent waters. Bioaccumulation is already reported in fish and small crustaceans, but the impact and consequences on other "non-target" aquatic species are still unclear and nowadays of great interest. In this study, we investigated the effects of a pharmaceutical preparation containing the benzodiazepine delorazepam on the embryogenesis of Xenopus laevis, amphibian model species, taxa at high risk of exposure to water contaminants...
