OBJECTIVE: We previously found that neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) were associated with interstitial lung disease (ILD) in dermatomyositis (DM) patients. However, it is unclear whether low-density granulocytes (LDGs), endowed with enhanced NET formation capabilities, contribute to the pathogenesis of ILD. This study aims to elucidate the relationship between LDGs and DM-associated ILD. METHODS: We recruited 48 DM patients (28 with ILD) as well as 19 healthy volunteers for this study...

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to detect the prevalence of anti-3-hydroxyl-3- methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase (anti-HMGCR) antibodies in Chinese patients with idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIMs), and to analyze the clinical features of the antibody-positive IIM patients. METHODS: The presence of anti-HMGCR antibodies was detected in 405 patients with IIMs, 90 healthy controls, and 221 patients with other rheumatic diseases by using an ELISA kit...

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate muscle MRI changes and the role of MRI in monitoring therapy in patients with myopathy associated with antibodies to signal recognition particle (anti-SRP myopathy). METHODS: We identified 12 patients with anti-SRP myopathy [6 females and 6 males; mean age of onset 38.5 years (s.d. 12.4), mean duration 22.8 months (s.d. 20.6). The main symptoms were proximal limb muscle weakness. Mean serum creatine kinase levels were moderately increased...

INTRODUCTION: The aim was to evaluate S100A4 protein as a biomarker of disease activity and potential cancer development in patients with myositis. METHODS: Serum levels of S100A4 were determined in 43 dermatomyositis (DM), 39 polymyositis (PM) and 22 cancer associated myositis (CAM) patients as well as in 77 healthy controls. The associations between S100A4 levels, inflammation, disease activity, muscle strength and cancer development were evaluated. RESULTS: All myositis patients had significantly higher serum levels of S100A4 protein compared to healthy controls (median (IQR): 31...

AIM: To determine the prevalence and identify the associated factors of reduced bone mineral density (BMD) in patients with idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIMs). METHOD: Existing patients diagnosed to have IIMs were recruited for measurement of BMD by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. Demographic, clinical and treatment variables of these patients were recorded. The prevalence of osteopenia and osteoporosis were calculated. Using multivariate analysis, the independent associated factors for reduced BMD were evaluated...

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the presence of dyslipidaemia in JDM and its possible risk factors. METHODS: Twenty-five JDM patients were compared to 25 healthy controls according to demographic data, body composition, fasting lipoproteins, glycaemia, insulin, antibodies and muscle enzymes. JDM scores were assessed: CMAS, MMT, DAS, MYOACT and MYTAX. RESULTS: Abnormal lipid profile was found in nine patients and four controls (36% vs. 16%, p=0.196)...

Polymyositis and dermatomyositis are chronic inflammatory muscle disorders with frequent involvement of other organs hence outcome measures should include these different aspects of disease. Muscle strength and muscle endurance are the most specific clinical features that should be assessed during treatment and longitudinal follow-up. Extramuscular involvement should also be assessed. An international, interdisciplinary network, the International Myositis Assessment Clinical Study Group (IMACS) has proposed a core set of outcome measures to assess three dimensions of myositis disease; disease activity (MYOACT), disease damage (MYODAM) and health related quality of life (SF-36) to be used in clinical trials...
