PURPOSE: Biopsies play a crucial role in determining the classification and staging of tumors. Ultrasound is frequently used in this procedure to provide real-time anatomical information. Using augmented reality (AR), surgeons can visualize ultrasound data and spatial navigation information seamlessly integrated with real tissues. This innovation facilitates faster and more precise biopsy operations. METHODS: We have developed an augmented reality biopsy navigation system characterized by low display latency and high accuracy...

Over a decade ago, longitudinal multiomics analysis was pioneered for early disease detection and individually tailored precision health interventions. However, high sample processing costs, expansive multiomics measurements along with complex data analysis have made this approach to precision/personalized medicine impractical. Here we describe in a case report, a more practical approach that uses fewer measurements, annual sampling, and faster decision making. We also show how this approach offers promise to detect an exceedingly rare and potentially fatal condition before it fully manifests...

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is a new nomenclature proposed in 2023. We aimed to compare the diagnostic efficacy of noninvasive tests (NITs) for advanced fibrosis under different nomenclatures in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB). A total of 844 patients diagnosed with CHB and concurrent steatotic liver disease (SLD) by liver biopsy were retrospectively enrolled and divided into four groups. The performances of fibrosis-4 (FIB-4), gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase to platelet ratio index (GPRI), aspartate aminotransferase to platelet ratio index (APRI), and liver stiffness measurement (LSM) were compared among the four groups...

OBJECTIVE: Currently, sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) is increasingly used in endometrial cancer, but the rate of missed metastatic lymph nodes compared to systemic lymph node dissection has been a concern. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the false negative rate (FNR) of SLNB in patients with endometrial cancer and to explore the risk factors associated with this FNR. DATA SOURCES: Three databases (PubMed, Embase, Web of Science) were searched from initial database build to January 2023 by two independent reviewers...

We report a case of rash in a 35-year-old female presenting with erythematous papules and infiltrative plaques on the nose and upper jaw resembling rosacea. The patient had been experiencing these symptoms for one year. A pathological biopsy revealed an inflammatory infiltrate consisting of dense perivascular lymphocytes surrounding hair follicles and sweat glands in the dermis. Immunohistochemistry demonstrated a predominance of CD4+ T cells compared to CD8+ T cells. Based on the clinical manifestations, histopathology, and immunohistochemistry, the patient was diagnosed with Jessner's Lymphocytic infiltration of the skin (JLIS)...

BACKGROUND: Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy is a hereditary progressive myopathy caused by aberrant expression of the transcription factor DUX4 in skeletal muscle. No approved disease-modifying treatments are available for this disorder. We aimed to assess the safety and efficacy of losmapimod (a small molecule that inhibits p38α MAPK, a regulator of DUX4 expression, and p38β MAPK) for the treatment of facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy. METHODS: We did a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase 2b trial at 17 neurology centres in Canada, France, Spain, and the USA...

Main pulmonary artery (MPA) involvement of lymphomatoid granulomatosis (LYG) is extremely rare. We described fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose (18 F-FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) findings in a case with LYG originated from the MPA. Fluorine-18-FDG PET/CT demonstrated nodular hypermetabolic foci in the MPA, corresponding well to the intraluminal filling defects on CT pulmonary angiography, and the secondary right heart dysfunction was observed. Final diagnosis was made after transcatheter MPA biopsies and multi-disciplinary consultation...

Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD) is a rare non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis characterized by massive lymphadenopathy and systemic extranodal lesions. We present the case of a 28-year-old woman who presented with recurrent blurred vision in her right eye for 3 months. She developed blindness and atrophy in her left eye a decade prior to presentation. She subsequently developed headache, fever, and impaired mental status. Cranial magnetic resonance imaging indicated hypertrophic pachymeningitis (HP), and 18 F-fluoro-2-deoxy-2-d-glucose (FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography revealed significant FDG uptake in the left dura mater...

BACKGROUND: KI67 is a well-known biomarker reflecting cell proliferation. We aim to elucidate the predictive role of KI67 in the efficacy of abiraterone for patients with advanced prostate cancer (PCa). METHODS: Clinicopathological data of 152 men with metastatic PCa, who received abiraterone therapy were retrospectively collected. The KI67 positivity was examined by immunohistochemistry using the prostate biopsy specimen. The predictive value of KI67 on the therapeutic efficacy of abiraterone was explored using Kaplan-Meier curve and Cox regression analysis...

Chronic liver disease has emerged as a significant global concern, with primary hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) representing a critical consequence of this disease. However, early detection of HCC remains challenging in clinical practice. Recently, there has been a growing interest in applying endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) as a diagnostic tool for gastrointestinal diseases. Nevertheless, using EUS to diagnose and treat HCC is uncommon. In this review we described the diagnostic and therapeutic applications of EUS in primary HCC and evaluated its clinical significance...

The purpose of this study was to explore the histopathological staging and differential diagnosis of marginal zone lymphoma in gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT lymphoma). We performed detailed histomorphology and immunohistochemistry investigations as well as genetic testing on endoscopic biopsy and endoscopic mucosal resection specimens from 18 patients with gastric MALT lymphoma. We found that gastric MALT lymphoma typically begins as a small, isolated area outside the lymphoid follicular mantle zone or proliferates in a multifocal, patchy manner, gradually spreads to the interfollicular zone, forming diffuse proliferation, invades the gastric mucosal glands, and infiltrates or proliferates into the center of peripheral reactive lymphoid follicles...

Immunoglobulin nephropathy (IgAN) stands as the most prevalent primary glomerular nephropathy globally, typically diagnosed through an invasive renal biopsy. Emerging research suggests the significant involvement of chiral amino acids in kidney disease progression. This study introduces a nonderivative LC-tandem mass spectrometry approach, offering efficient separation outcomes within 15 min for identifying chiral amino acids in human urine samples. Subsequently, using this method, the analysis of l- and d-amino acids in the urine of both patients with IgAN and healthy individuals was conducted...
