BACKGROUNDDespite its high prevalence, relatively little is known about the characteristics of patients with multiple tree-nuts allergies.METHODSPatients (n=60, aged 4-15 years), recruited for a multiple food (tree-nuts, peanut, milk, egg, soy, sesame and wheat) oral immunotherapy (OIT) study, filled a questionnaire on their initial allergy evaluation. Medical records were reviewed. At OIT enrollment (median interval, 7.5 years), patients underwent oral food challenges (OFC) to foods still eliminated.RESULTSThere was significantly less evidence for eliminating tree-nuts compared to other foods, as reflected by lower rate of acute reaction to the offending food, either as the trigger for initial allergy evaluation (5...

BACKGROUNDHistone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors are promising therapeutics for various forms of cardiac disease. The purpose of this study was to assess cardiac HDAC catalytic activity and expression in children with single ventricle heart disease of right ventricular morphology (SV), as well as in a rodent model of right ventricular hypertrophy (RVH).METHODSHomogenates of RV explants from non-failing controls and SV children were assayed for HDAC catalytic activity and HDAC isoform expression. Postnatal 1-day old rat pups were placed in hypoxic conditions and echocardiographic analysis, gene expression, HDAC catalytic activity and isoform expression studies of the RV were performed...

BACKGROUNDPreterm newborns exposed to intrauterine inflammation are at increased risk of neurodevelopmental disorders. We hypothesized that adverse outcomes are more strongly associated with a combination of antenatal and postnatal inflammation than with either of them alone.METHODSWe defined antenatal inflammation as histologic inflammation in the placenta. We measured the concentrations of seven inflammation-related proteins in blood obtained on postnatal days 1, 7, and 14 from 763 infants born before 28 weeks of gestation...

At some tertiary breast care centers, where many patients are referred from other institutions, it is routine to repeat testing for estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), and human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER2/neu) in excision specimens if these tests were performed on the preceding biopsy at the referring facility. The goal of this study is to assess the value of this practice. We documented results from ER, PR, and HER2 testing in 541 consecutive invasive breast cancers excised over a 2...

Magee Equations were derived as an inexpensive, rapid alternative to Oncotype DX. The Magee Equation 3 utilizes immunohistochemical and FISH data for estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), HER2 and Ki-67 for its calculation (24.30812+ERIHC × (-0.02177)+PRIHC × (-0.02884)+(0 for HER2 negative, 1.46495 for equivocal, 12.75525 for HER2 positive)+Ki-67 × 0.18649). We hypothesize that Magee Equation 3 scores from pre-therapy core biopsy can predict response to neoadjuvant systemic chemotherapy. A prospectively-maintained database of patients who received neoadjuvant systemic therapy from 2010 to 2014 at a single institution was retrospectively reviewed...

The present study was designed to determine if feeding steers extruded flaxseed and hay (25 and 75%; DM basis) together as a total mixed ration (TMR), or sequentially (non-TMR) would result in different enrichments of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and their biohydrogenation intermediates (BHI) in beef adipose tissues [subcutaneous (SC) vs perirenal (PR) fat]. Forty-eight Angus cross steers (325 ± 16 kg) were stratified by weight to six pens, and pens were randomized to either TMR or non-TMR and fed ad libitum for an average of 242 days...

INTRODUCTION    In the era of novel agent implementation in multiple myeloma (MM) regimens, drug resistance has become a key factor undermining the results of treatment. Identifying biomarkers allows the prediction of therapy outcomes with specific agents and may lead to the avoidance of resistance. OBJECTIVES    This study aimed to identify biomarkers in the pretreatment sera of patients with refractory/relapsed MM that differ from those in the sera of patients who achieved a better depth of response from bortezomib-containing therapy...

Pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) remains grossly underutilised by suitable patients worldwide. We investigated whether home-based maintenance tele-rehabilitation will be as effective as hospital-based maintenance rehabilitation and superior to usual care in reducing the risk for acute chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbations, hospitalisations and emergency department (ED) visits.Following completion of an initial 2-month PR programme this prospective, randomised controlled trial (between December 2013 and July 2015) compared 12 months of home-based maintenance tele-rehabilitation (n=47) with 12 months of hospital-based, outpatient, maintenance rehabilitation (n=50) and also to 12 months of usual care treatment (n=50) without initial PR...

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies have linked exposures to ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and traffic with autonomic nervous system imbalance (ANS) and cardiac pathophysiology, especially in individuals with preexisting disease. It is unclear whether metabolic syndrome (MetS) increases susceptibility to the effects of PM2.5. We hypothesized that exposure to traffic-derived primary and secondary organic aerosols (P + SOA) at ambient levels would cause autonomic and cardiovascular dysfunction in rats exhibiting features of MetS...

BACKGROUND: Terminal duct lobular unit (TDLU) involution is a physiological process of breast tissue aging characterized by a reduction in the epithelial component. In studies of women with benign breast disease, researchers have found that age-matched women with lower levels of TDLU involution are at increased risk of developing breast cancer. We previously showed that breast cancer cases with core basal phenotype (CBP; estrogen receptor negative [ER(-)], progesterone receptor-negative [PR(-)], human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-negative [HER2(-)], cytokeratins (CK 5 or CK5/6)-positive [CK5/6(+)] and/or epidermal growth factor receptor-positive [EGFR(+)]) tumors had significantly reduced TDLU involution compared with cases with luminal A (ER(+) and/or PR(+), HER2(-), CK5/6(-), EGFR(-)) tumors from a population-based case-control study in Poland...

BACKGROUND: The blood urea nitrogen to creatinine ratio (BCR) has been used since the early 1940s to help clinicians differentiate between prerenal acute kidney injury (PR AKI) and intrinsic AKI (I AKI). This ratio is simple to use and often put forward as a reliable diagnostic tool even though little scientific evidence supports this. The aim of this study was to determine whether BCR is a reliable tool for distinguishing PR AKI from I AKI. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective observational study over a 13 months period, in the Emergency Department (ED) of Nantes University Hospital...

Highly enantioselective arylation of aryl aldehydes catalyzed by (S)-H8 -BINOL-Ti(Oi-Pr)2 complex in the presence of N-methylmorpholine (NMM) as an effective and inexpensive additive is described for the first time. We found high enantioselectivity and yield but successfully reduced the equivalents of nucleophiles triarylaluminums by 50% compared with our previous report. The practicability of the process was thereby greatly increased.

BACKGROUND: Anthracyclines are important chemotherapeutic agents, but their use is limited by cardiotoxicity. Candidate gene and genome-wide studies have identified putative risk loci for overt cardiotoxicity and heart failure, but there has been no comprehensive assessment of genomic variation influencing the intermediate phenotype of anthracycline-related changes in left ventricular (LV) function. The purpose of this study was to identify genetic factors influencing changes in LV function after anthracycline chemotherapy...

As the sequencing cost continued to drop in the past decade, RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) has replaced microarray to become the standard high-throughput experimental tool to analyze transcriptomic profile. As more and more datasets are generated and accumulated in the public domain, meta-analysis to combine multiple transcriptomic studies to increase statistical power has received increasing popularity. In this article, we propose a Bayesian hierarchical model to jointly integrate microarray and RNA-seq studies...
