BACKGROUND: Support for the oncological safety of oncoplastic breast conservation surgery (OBCS) is mostly based on evidence comparing recurrence rates after OBCS to wide local excision (WLE). However, OBCS is often indicated for larger cancers and oncological results should also be compared to patients treated with mastectomy. In this study we compared recurrence and survival following OBCS, mastectomy and WLE. METHODS: Patients treated with OBCS between 2009 and 2012 were identified from a prospectively maintained database...

Salivary gland-type tumors are rare in the lung. Primary acinic cell carcinoma of the lung is extremely rare. Here, we report a case of primary acinic cell carcinoma of the lung with prominent psammoma bodies. A 31-year-old man came to our hospital with a tumor in the basal segment of the lower lobe of the right lung. The tumor tissue displayed solid, acinar, or microcystic structures at different regions. A large amount of psammoma bodies were scattered in more than half of the tumor. The majority of the tumor cells were round or polygonal in shape, with abundant acidophilic granular or vacuolated cytoplasm...

AIMS: Tumor-infiltrating FoxP3(+) T cells and FoxP3(+) tumor cells have been reported in breast cancer (BC), which impaired immunity and promoted tumors progression. However, their prognostic value for survival in patients with breast BC remains controversial. METHODS: A meta-analysis was performed. Original data included the hazard ratios (HR) of overall survival (OS), relapse-free survival and odds ratio (OR) in BC patients. We pooled HR/OR with 95% confidence intervals (CI) to estimate the hazard...

PURPOSE: The ER-/PR-/HER2- or triple-negative (TNBC) subtype is more prevalent among women who are young, black, Hispanic, and of lower SES. The purpose of this study is to determine if young age and low SES are associated with TNBC within four mutually exclusive race/ethnicities. METHODS: The study identified 19,283 cases of TNBC and 89,089 of ER+/PR+/HER2- from the California Cancer Registry. Logistic regression analyses were conducted separately for whites, blacks, Hispanics, and Asian/Pacific Islanders (API) to compute the adjusted odds ratios (OR) for age and SES for the TNBC versus the ER+/PR+/HER2- subtype...

The mechanisms underlying arrhythmia induced by the clinical use of azithromycin are poorly understood. We aimed to investigate the proarrhythmic effects of azithromycin using electrocardiogram (ECG) and ion channel models. In vivo and in vitro guinea pig ECG and current and voltage clamp recordings were carried out. Azithromycin at 114.6 mg/kg (three times the clinically relevant dose) reduced heart rate (HR) and prolonged the PR, QRS and rate-corrected QT (QTc) intervals of guinea pig ECG in vivo. In vitro technique revealed that azithromycin at 207...

Plant-derived pentacyclic triterpenotids with multiple biological activities are considered as promising candidates for cancer therapy and prevention. However, their mechanisms of action are not fully understood. In the present study, we have analyzed the effects of low dose treatment (5-20 µM) of ursolic acid (UA) and betulinic acid (BA) on breast cancer cells of different receptor status, namely MCF-7 (ER(+), PR(+/-), HER2(-)), MDA-MB-231 (ER(-), PR(-), HER2(-)) and SK-BR-3 (ER(-), PR(-), HER2(+)). UA-mediated response was more potent than BA-mediated response...

INTRODUCTION: Inguinal lymph nodes are the frequent sites of metastasis for malignant lymphoma, squamous cell carcinoma of anal canal, vulva and penis, malignant melanoma and squamous cell carcinoma of skin over lower extremities or trunk. Anatomically, endometrial carcinoma is less likely to spread to the superficial or deep inguinal lymph nodes, thus metastatic involvement of these lymph nodes can easily be overlooked. CASE PRESENTATION: Here-in we report a case of a 65-year old Saudi morbid obese female, who presented with left inguinal lymphadenopathy as initial delayed site of metastasis almost 19 months after the initial treatment for FIGO IA endometrial carcinoma...

INTRODUCTION: Idiopathic cyclic edema (ICE) is a rare cause of edema. To date, there is no standard of care. The physiopathology of ICE could be explained by an impairment of capillary permeability. In 1995, a study demonstrated the efficacy of metformin on symptoms and capillary permeability. We evaluated ICE-patients who were treated with metformin in our department. METHODS: We retrospectively included patients diagnosed for ICE between January 1997 and October 2013...

Phosphorus (P) is one of the most important nutrients for phytoremediation of arsenic (As)-contaminated soils. In this study, we demonstrated that As-hyperaccumulator Pteris vittata was efficient in acquiring P from insoluble phosphate rock (PR). When supplemented with PR as the sole P source in hydroponic systems, P. vittata accumulated 49% and 28% higher P in the roots and fronds than the -P treatment. In contrast, non-hyperaccumulator Pteris ensiformis was unable to solubilize P from PR. To gain insights into PR solubilization by plants, organic acids in plant root exudates were analyzed by HPLC...

INTRODUCTION: Lipoma is the most familiar soft-tissue tumor. But the etiology of lipoma remains imprecise. Sex steroid hormones such as estrogen have effects on muscle and adipose tissue development. There is now significant evidence that sex steroids are involved in the site specificities of adipose tissue metabolism. This association of adipose tissue metabolism between sex steroid hormones suggests a possible role for sex steroids in the pathogenesis of lipoma. METHODS: To investigate this concept, the authors evaluated the expression of the estrogen receptor (ER) and the progesterone receptor (PR) in soft tissue lipoma in this study...

Although cardiotoxicity has been recognized as an adverse effect of cyclosporine A (CSA), no information exists regarding sex specificity of CSA cardiotoxicity. We tested the hypothesis that left ventricular (LV) and electrocardiographic (ECG) effects of CSA and related inflammatory/histopathological derangements are sex related. CSA reduced the LV slope of end-systolic pressure volume relationship and increased isovolumic relaxation constant. These effects were more pronounced in male compared to female rats, suggesting LV systolic and diastolic dysfunction...

Characteristic ECG changes with hypercalcemia include shortening of the QoT, QaT, and QeT intervals which are measured from the beginning of the QRS complex to the origin (O), apex (A), and end (E) of the T wave respectively. At very high serum calcium levels ECG changes include slight prolongation of the PR and QRS intervals, T wave flattening or inversion, and the appearance of a J wave at the end of the QRS complex. We present a case of a 22year-old male, who had been bedbound for 5months following a severe motor vehicle collision, presenting with shortening of the QoT and QaT intervals leading to anterior ST elevation mimicking acute myocardial infarction...

Pityriasis Rosea (PR) is a common skin disease and characterized by generalized scaly eruptions typically on the trunk and proximal extremities. Atypical presentations of PR are common and can be a diagnostic challenge for clinicians. Here we present a case of a 26-year-old female who presented with a sudden onset of several asymptomatic, erythematous and scaly plaques on her trunk. Plaques sized 0.5-1cm in diameter that were distributed unilaterally (right side) on her chest, back and axilla. Atypical cases of PR are fairly common and less readily recognized...

Cardiac involvements are common in patients with Dermatomyositis, most of which are not severe enough to present definite or readily observable symptoms. However, Cardiovascular (CVS) manifestations constitute a major cause of death in these patients. The most frequently reported clinically evident of CVS manifestations in-patient of dermatomyositis are Congestive Heart Failure (CHF), conduction aberrations, that may predispose to complete heart block and coronary artery disease. The principal pathophysiological mechanisms that may produce these cardiac manifestations involve coronary artery disease as well as small vessels vasculitis of the myocardium...

We investigate large-scale circulation reversals in a two-dimensional Rayleigh-Bénard cell using a proper orthogonal decomposition (POD)-based, five-mode model. The Rayleigh number considered is Ra=5×10^{7} and the Prandtl number is Pr=4.3. A precursor event, corresponding to the action of a mode L_{*} which disconnects the core region from the boundary layers before the onset of the reversal, is identified in the simulation. The five-mode model predicts correctly the behavior of the POD modes observed in the simulation, and in particular that of mode L_{*}...

BACKGROUND: Differences in genetics and receptor expression (phenotypes) of invasive ductal breast cancer (IDC) impact on prognosis and treatment response. Immunohistochemistry (IHC), the most used technique for IDC phenotyping, has some limitations including its invasiveness. We explored the possibility of contrast-enhanced positron emission tomography magnetic resonance (CE-FDG PET/MR) to discriminate IDC phenotypes. METHODS: 21 IDC patients with IHC assessment of oestrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), human epidermal growth factor-2 (HER2), and antigen Ki-67 (Ki67) underwent CE-FDG PET/MR...

Russian and German have pr eviously been described as 'truncating', or cutting off target frequencies of the phrase-final pitch trajectories when the time available for voicing is compromised. However, supporting evidence is rare and limited to only a few pitch categories. This paper reports a production study conducted to document pitch adjustments to linguistic materials, in which the amount of voicing available for the realization of a pitch pattern varies from relatively long to extremely short. Productions of nuclear H+L*, H* and L*+H pitch accents followed by a low boundary tone were investigated in the two languages...
