MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play a crucial role as transcription regulators in various aspects of follicular development, including steroidogenesis, ovulation, apoptosis, and gene regulation in poultry. However, there is a paucity of studies examining the specific impact of miRNAs on ovarian granulosa cells (GCs) across multiple grades in laying hens. Consequently, this study aims to investigate the roles of miRNAs in chicken GCs. By constructing miRNA expression profiles of GCs at 10 different time points, encompassing 4 pre-hierarchical, 5 preovulatory, and 1 postovulatory follicles stage, we identified highly expressed miRNAs involved in GC differentiation (miR-148a-3p, miR-143-3p), apoptosis (let7 family, miR-363-3p, miR-30c-5p, etc...

Ovarian follicle development is a complex and well-orchestrated biological process of great economic significance for poultry production. Specifically, understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying follicular development is essential for high-efficiency follicular development can benefit the entire industry. In addition, domestic egg-laying hens often spontaneously develop ovarian cancer, providing an opportunity to study the genetic, biochemical, and environmental risk factors associated with the development of this cancer...

Cathepsin L (CTSL) plays physiological and pathological roles in immune responses, cancer, metamorphosis, and oogenesis in several species. However, the function of Ctsl in medaka ovaries remains unclear. Therefore, here, we examined the physiological functions of Ctsl in the medaka ovaries. Ctsl mRNA transcripts and proteins were found to be constitutively expressed in the ovaries of Oryzias latipes over a 24-h spawning cycle. Expression was localized within the oocyte cytoplasm of growing follicles and the follicle layer of preovulatory and postovulatory follicles...

Temperature is a critical factor for fish management, especially during breeding season. This study evaluated gametogenesis and gonadal maturation in the catfish Lophiosilurus alexandri under farming conditions in two temperatures. The fish were divided in the following experimental groups: (S0) control group, before starting the experiment, (S1) 30 days at 23 °C, (S2) 70 days at 23 °C, (S3) 30 days at 27 °C, and (S4) 70 days at 27 °C. Objectives: Most of the currently available ovulation prediction kits provide a relatively rough estimation of ovulation time with a short fertility window. This is due to their focus on the maximum probability of conception occurring one day before ovulation, with no follow-up after LH surge until ovulation nor during the subsequent days thereafter. Earlier studies have shown that urine of reproductive age women contains at least 3 different molecular forms of luteinizing hormone (LH); 1) intact LH, 2) LH beta-subunit (LHβ) and a 3) small molecular weight fragment of LHβ, LHβ core fragment (LHβcf)...

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the vascularization features of canine ovaries during the follicular phase and the formation of the corpora lutea by using Doppler ultrasonography and Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound (CEUS). Eight healthy bitches were enrolled in the study and were evaluated at five different timepoints (T1 - T5) of the estrous cycle established by vaginal cytology and serum progesterone concentration. Ultrasonographic examinations were performed by a single operator using the ACUSON S2000/SIEMENS machine equipped with a linear multifrequency transducer (9...

To characterize the female reproductive biology of the endangered species Steindachneridion parahybae in captivity, we used the concentration of gonadal steroids, the oocyte development during the annual reproductive cycle (RC), and after artificial induced spawning (AIS) until 48 hours. Three stages of gonadal maturation were identified, based on morphological and physiological features: early maturation or previtellogenic oocyte (PRV), advanced maturation or vitellogenic oocyte (VTG), and regression or follicular atresia (REG)...

Folliculogenesis is a complex biological process involving a central oocyte and its surrounding somatic cells. Three-dimensional chromatin architecture is an important transcription regulator; however, little is known about its dynamics and role in transcriptional regulation of granulosa cells during chicken folliculogenesis. We investigate the transcriptomic dynamics of chicken granulosa cells over ten follicular stages and assess the chromatin architecture dynamics and how it influences gene expression in granulosa cells at three key stages: the prehierarchical small white follicles, the first largest preovulatory follicles, and the postovulatory follicles...

Many matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are produced in the mammalian reproductive system and participate in the regulation of its functions. In birds, the limited information available thus far indicates that MMPs are significant regulators of avian ovarian and oviductal functions, too. Some MMPs and inhibitors of MMPs are present in the hen reproductive tissues and their abundances and/or activities change according to the physiological state. The intraovarian role of MMPs likely includes the remodeling of the extracellular matrix (ECM) during folliculogenesis, follicle atresia, and postovulatory regression...

Based on a previous global transcriptome sequencing project, we hypothesized that Lumican (LUM) might play a role in ovulatory processes. We sought to determine LUM gene expression under various conditions in human preovulatory follicles. The in vitro expression of LUM mRNA in mural (MGCs) and cumulus (CGCs) granulosa cells was characterized using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). Immunohistochemical staining was used to identify human LUM expression in follicles at different developmental stages...

Neurotensin (NTS) is a tridecapeptide that was first characterized as a neurotransmitter in neuronal cells. The present study examined ovarian NTS expression across the periovulatory period in the human and the rat. Women were recruited into this study and monitored by transvaginal ultrasound. The dominant follicle was surgically excised prior to the LH surge (preovulatory phase) or women were given 250 μg hCG and dominant follicles collected 12-18 h after hCG (early ovulatory), 18-34 h (late ovulatory) and 44-70 h (postovulatory)...

Accurate stock assessment estimates of fish resources are essential in fishery management. Wide fluctuations in abundance arising from variations in reproductive success are characteristic of many marine fish populations, including multiple spawner species. The proportion of females spawning per day is crucial in the application of egg production methods for spawning biomass evaluation and, usually, is assessed by postovulatory follicle (POF) method. Describing each degeneration stage of POF based upon its histological features allows for obtaining an aging key for postovulatory follicles...

Hardhead catfish Ariopsis felis are a common marine catfish in the coastal waters of the Gulf of Mexico (GOM). Low economic value of the species has depressed interest and research, and although the species is known for its extremely low fecundity and large oocytes, little else is known about this catfish species. A total of 1,230 samples across all months of the year from 2016 to 2018 resulted in 681 females, and analysis of gonadosmatic index (IG ) revealed 1% to be a clear cutoff indicating maturity. Females are considered spawning capable in April-June when IG averaged 4-8%...

Black Soldier Fly (BSF) meal is considered an alternative, emerging, and sustainable ingredient for aquafeed formulation. However, results on fish physiological responses are still fragmentary and often controversial, and no data are available on the effect of insect meal-based diets on fish reproduction. On this regard, zebrafish, with its relatively short life cycle, represents an ideal experimental model to explore this topic. In this study, female zebrafish were fed for 12 months on a control diet based on fish meal (FM) and fish oil and two experimental diets with full-fat BSF ( Hermetia illucens ) prepupae meal inclusion, to replace 25% and 50% of FM (BSF25 and BSF50)...
