We report a measurement of the CP-violating parameters C and S in B^{0}→K_{S}^{0}π^{0} decays at Belle II using a sample of 387×10^{6}  BB[over ¯] events recorded in e^{+}e^{-} collisions at a center-of-mass energy corresponding to the ϒ(4S) resonance. These parameters are determined by fitting the proper decay-time distribution of a sample of 415 signal events. We obtain C=-0.04_{-0.15}^{+0.14}±0.05 and S=0.75_{-0.23}^{+0.20}±0.04, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic...

OBJECTIVE: People with HIV rarely control viral replication after cessation of antiretroviral therapy (ART). We present a person with HIV with extraordinary post-treatment control (PTC) for over 23 years after temporary ART during acute HIV infection (AHI) leading to a new insight in factors contributing to PTC. DESIGN/METHODS: Viral reservoir was determined by HIV qPCR, Intact Proviral DNA Assay and quantitative viral outgrowth assay. Viral replication kinetics were determined in autologous and donor PBMC...

INTRODUCTION: A pressure flow study (PFS), part of the International Continence Society standard urodynamic test, is regarded gold standard for the classification and quantification of the urethral resistance (UR), expressed in the bladder outflow obstruction (BOO). For men with benign prostatic hyperplasia, the minimum urethral opening pressure (pmuo ), found at the end of the passive urethral resistance relation is considered the relevant parameter describing BOO. However, in clinical practice, direct measurements of pmuo are easily confounded by terminal dribbling...

OBJECTIVES: Core fucosylation by fucosyltransferase 8 (FUT8) is an important post-translational modification that impacts components of the immune system. Genetic variations in FUT8 can alter its function and could therefore play a role in the anti-viral immune response and pathogenesis of HIV-1. This study analyzed the effect of a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in FUT8 on the clinical course of HIV-1 infection. DESIGN/METHODS: The effect of SNPs in FUT8 on untreated HIV-1 disease outcome were analyzed in a cohort of 304 people with HIV-1 (PWH) using survival analysis...

BACKGROUND: Sealants are used to prevent prolonged pulmonary air leakage (PAL) after lung resections (incidence 5.6-30%). However, clinical evidence to support sealant use is insufficient, with an unmet need for a more effective product. We compared a novel gelatin patch impregnated with functionalized polyoxazolines (NHS-POx) (GATT-Patch) to commercially available sealant products. METHODS: GATT-Patch Single/Double layers were compared to Progel® , Coseal® , Hemopatch® and TachoSil® in an ex vivo porcine lung model (first experiment)...

BACKGROUND: Small bowel obstruction (SBO) is responsible for 350,000 U.S. hospitalizations and costs ~ $2.3 billion annually. The current standard of care for SBO is to trial 3 to 5 days of non-operative management. This study evaluated the factors associated with operative management. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included adult patients admitted with adhesive SBO. Exclusions were for operative intervention within 24 h or death...

The primary aim was to compare cases seen by public endodontic clinicians (endodontists and endodontic registrars) to that of private endodontists. This was done by comparing item numbers charged over a 3-year period from 1 January 2016 to 1 January 2019 from both sectors. The secondary aim was to compare item numbers charged by endodontic registrars during their training as recorded by their submitted logbooks to that of private endodontists. In both comparisons, private endodontists recorded higher numbers of many item numbers including consultations, routine root canal treatment, removal of posts and broken instruments...

PURPOSE: Calls for "mutuality" in global mental health (GMH) aim to produce knowledge more equitably across epistemic and power differences. With funding, convening, and publishing power still concentrated in institutions in the global North, efforts to decolonize GMH emphasize the need for mutual learning instead of unidirectional knowledge transfers. This article reflects on mutuality as a concept and practice that engenders sustainable relations, conceptual innovation, and queries how epistemic power can be shared...

Deleterious variants in N- acetylneuraminate pyruvate lyase (NPL) cause skeletal myopathy and cardiac edema in humans and zebrafish, but its physiological role remains unknown. We report generation of mouse models of the disease: NplR63C , carrying the human p.Arg63Cys variant, and Npldel116 with a 116-bp exonic deletion. In both strains, NPL deficiency causes drastic increase in free sialic acid levels, reduction of skeletal muscle force and endurance, slower healing and smaller size of newly formed myofibers after cardiotoxin-induced muscle injury, increased glycolysis, partially impaired mitochondrial function, and aberrant sialylation of dystroglycan and mitochondrial LRP130 protein...

Humans are exposed to perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAA) mainly through direct pathways, such as diet and drinking water, but indirect exposure also occurs when PFAA precursors break down to form legacy PFAA. Exposure to PFAA precursors raises particular concern, as neither the exposure nor the precursors themselves have been well described. In the present study, we aimed to assess the indirect contribution of oxidizable PFAA precursors to the total per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) burden in human plasma following the voluntary phase-out of production of long-chain PFAS...

Antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) programs in hospitals comprise coordinated strategies to optimise antimicrobial use. The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on the healthcare system, including AMS. This study aimed to understand the work processes of AMS teams during COVID-19 hospital restrictions and the role technology played in supporting AMS. Observations and interviews were conducted with AMS teams at two hospitals in Sydney, Australia. Participants reported an increase in antimicrobial use, a loss of resources for AMS activities, and reduced in-person interactions...

We search for lepton-flavor-violating τ^{-}→e^{-}α and τ^{-}→μ^{-}α decays, where α is an invisible spin-0 boson. The search uses electron-positron collisions at 10.58 GeV center-of-mass energy with an integrated luminosity of 62.8  fb^{-1}, produced by the SuperKEKB collider and collected with the Belle II detector. We search for an excess in the lepton-energy spectrum of the known τ^{-}→e^{-}ν[over ¯]_{e}ν_{τ} and τ^{-}→μ^{-}ν[over ¯]_{μ}ν_{τ} decays...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Studies analysing the association of albuminuria and prevalent frailty in community-dwelling very old adults are scarce and lack information on incident frailty. We investigated the association of kidney function decline and increase of albuminuria with frailty worsening or death in very old adults. DESIGN: Longitudinal analyses with biennial visits of the Berlin Initiative (cohort) Study and a frailty follow-up of 2.1 years. SETTING/SUBJECTS: 1,076 participants with a mean age of 84...

Few studies have comprehensively compared severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) vaccine-induced and hybrid B- and T-cell responses in people with HIV (PWH) to those in comparable controls without HIV. We included 195 PWH and 246 comparable controls from the AGEh IV COVID-19 substudy. A positive nucleocapsid antibody (INgezim IgA/IgM/IgG) or self-reported PCR test defined prior SARS-CoV-2 infection. SARS-CoV-2 anti-spike (anti-S) IgG titers and anti-S IgG production by memory B cells were assessed...

BACKGROUND: Bivalent mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccines encoding the ancestral and omicron spike (S) protein were developed as a countermeasure against antigenically distinct SARS-CoV-2 variants. We aimed to assess the (variant-specific) immunogenicity and reactogenicity of mRNA-based bivalent omicron (BA.1) vaccines in individuals who were primed with adenovirus-based or mRNA-based vaccines encoding the ancestral spike protein. METHODS: We analysed results of the direct boost group of the SWITCH ON study, an open-label, multicentre, randomised controlled trial...

BACKGROUND: Integrative nursing is a framework for providing holistic care and includes complementary therapies and non-pharmacological interventions. There is no common European approach on how to educate healthcare professionals on complementary therapies and non-pharmacological interventions for symptom management. Nurses report a lack of formal education as the main barrier to applying integrative nursing. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to develop and validate integrative nursing learning outcomes in a competency profile for bachelor nursing students...

Sealants may provide a solution for pulmonary air leakage (PAL), but their clinical application is debatable. For sealant comparison, standardized animal models are lacking. This systematic review aims to assess methodology and quality of animal models for PAL and sealant evaluation. All animal models investigating lung sealing devices (e.g., staplers, glues, energy devices) to prevent or treat PAL were retrieved systematically from Embase, Pubmed and Web of science. Methodological study characteristics, risk of bias, reporting quality and publication bias were assessed...

The aim was to compare referral patterns and treatment provided by specialist Endodontists and Endodontic Registrars. A retrospective review was conducted of the clinical records of the first 25 patients seen by seven private endodontic clinicians and the equivalent number (175) of patients seen by five public sector endodontic clinicians from 1 January 2017. The average age and range of medical co-morbidities of patients in the public sector were statistically greater. Referred patients and referrers mainly worked in metropolitan Perth...
