In this case report, we present a female patient with neutrophilic dermatosis (ND) occurring as palpable purpura after using montelukast. Neutrophilic dermatoses (NDs) are characterized by skin lesions in which mature neutrophils are predominantly located in the epidermis and dermis in the absence of any infective pathology. Classification of the NDs is based upon the recognition of clinical and pathologic features, as well as the identification of associated diseases, like Sweet's syndrome, pyoderma gangrenosum, generalized pustular psoriasis, and Behçet's disease...

Skin involvement may occur in patients with Wegener's granulomatosis (polyangiitis with granulomatosis; WG) and is more frequent in the generalised form. However, when a patient with vasculitis develops digital ulceration, in addition to disease activation, other pathologies should be considered. One of them may be the herpetic whitlow mimicking paronychia. Here, we present a patient who developed herpetic whitlow during the course of immunosuppressive therapy due to WG. Just before the third course of cyclophosphamide therapy, she was re-admitted to the outpatient clinic with the above-mentioned ulcerated lesions...

Aim of this paper is to present and discuss a case of a delayed cerebellar parenchymal hemorrhage developing after L/P shunt placement with a NPH patient. A hypertensive patient admitted to our clinic with a diagnosis of NPH. The patient was placed a pressure adjustable L/P shunt without any surgical complication. He was discharged with an uneventful period. The patient was admitted to the emergency clinic of our hospital with a 1.5 × 1.5 cm diameter hematoma at the left cerebellar hemisphere on 2 days after his discharge...

The viridans group Streptococci (VGS) are most abundant in the mouth; in some instances they might emerge as pathogens particularly in infective endocarditis (IE). In this study, we aimed to define and determine the susceptibility against antibiotics of VGS that are members of the oral microbiota of patients exhibiting a risk of developing IE. Forty-nine patients at risk of infective endocarditis were included in the study. Identification of the bacteria was performed using API STREP (bioMérieux, France). Gradient test strips (E-Test, France) were used to determine MIC of the bacteria against penicillin, ampicillin, and vancomycin...

OBJECTIVE: The present objective was to compare changes in lifestyle between (i) Turkish women and Turkish men, and (ii) Turkish women and European women, after hospitalization for coronary heart disease (CHD). Risk factor management, physical activity, mood, and quality of life (QOL) indices were compared. METHODS: A total of 2268 women (25.3% of 8966 patients, mean age: 65.8±9.0 years) were interviewed using the European Action on Secondary and Primary Prevention by Intervention to Reduce Events III (EUROASPIRE III)...

Urethral coitus is an extremely rare condition. Megalourethra and urinary incontinence due to urethral coitus in vaginal agenesis are unusual manifestations because these patients usually present with primary amenorrhea before becoming sexually active and receive treatment. A 24-year-old woman came to our clinic because of primary amenorrhea, sexual dysfunction, dyspareunia, megalourethra and urinary incontinence five months after her marriage due to urethral coitus. Based on these clinical and radiological findings a diagnosis of Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser Syndrome was made and patient underwent modified McIndoe Vaginoplasty...

Although heparin administration has reduced the incidence of radial artery occlusion (RAO) during the transradial coronary angiography (TRCA), the effective activated clotting time (ACT) value for guiding unfractionated heparin dosing in patients undergoing TRCA is unknown. Four hundred thirty-two patients who were scheduled for elective TRCA were enrolled in our prospective study. All the patients received a standard dose of 5,000 IU unfractionated heparin. Anticoagulation level was assessed by ACT measurements that were taken at the end of the procedure just before the sheath removal...

PURPOSE: To evaluate lenticular oxidative stress in rat menopausal models. METHODS: Forty Wistar female albino rats were included in this study. A total of thirty rats underwent oophorectomy to generate a menopausal model. Ten rats that did not undergo oophorectomy formed the control group (Group 1). From the rats that underwent oophorectomy, 10 formed the menopause control group (Group 2), 10 were administered a daily injection of methylprednisolone until the end of the study (Group 3), and the remaining 10 rats were administered intraperitoneal streptozocin to induce diabetes mellitus (Group 4)...

The aim of this review is to update the indications, contraindications, technique, complications, and the tissue engineering approaches of augmentation cystoplasty (AC) in patients with neurogenic bladder. PubMed/MEDLINE was searched for the keywords "augmentation cystoplasty," "neurogenic bladder," and "bladder augmentation." Additional relevant literature was determined by examining the reference lists of articles identified through the search. The update review of of the indications, contraindications, technique, outcome, complications, and tissue engineering approaches of AC in patients with neurogenic bladder is presented...

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate sexual function in women before and after vaginal hysterectomy (VH) and to compare the effects of horizontal and vertical vaginal cuff closure on sexual function. STUDY DESIGN: Women with uterine prolapse of stage 2 or higher were included to this prospective, randomized study. All patients underwent VH with McCall Culdoplasty and patients were randomized into two groups in terms of the vaginal cuff closure technique employed which is either vertically (group 1, right to left) or horizontally (group 2, anterior to posterior)...

AIM: This study was aimed to investigate whether nerve regeneration can be induced in the tubular bone between distal and proximal cut nerve ends. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty adult Wistar rats were used for the study. Rats were divided in three groups; femoral bone conduit group, nerve transection group, sham group. Sciatic nerve was surgically cut and from both ends inserted into the adjacent femoral bone tunnel at femoral bone conduit group. The sciatic nerve was cut transversely at nerve transection group...

A new method based on high resolution melting (HRM) analysis was developed for the differentiation and classification of the yeast species that cause food spoilage. A total 134 strains belonging to 21 different yeast species were examined to evaluate the discriminative power of HRM analysis. Two different highly variable DNA regions on the 26 rRNA gene were targeted to produce the HRM profiles of each strain. HRM-based grouping was compared and confirmed by (GTG)5 rep-PCR fingerprinting analysis. All of the yeast species belonging to the genera Pichia, Candida, Kazachstania, Kluyveromyces, Debaryomyces, Dekkera, Saccharomyces, Torulaspora, Ustilago, and Yarrowia, which were produced as species-specific HRM profiles, allowed discrimination at species and/or strain level...

Congenital portosystemic shunts are rare vascular malformations that lead to several complications including liver tumors, pulmonary hypertension, and metabolic encephalopathy. We describe a rare case of a 17-year-old girl with an extrahepatic portosystemic shunt presenting recurrent syncope episodes and a liver mass mimicking hepatocellulary carcinoma.

OBJECTIVE: Carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) is reliable marker of subclinical atherosclerosis and cardiovascular events. Until today, there was no study that investigated whether epicardial adipose tissue (EAT), which is a surrogate for lipid depot in a special visceral tissue or circulating lipids, is more important for CIMT and atherosclerotic plaque. METHODS: Our study, having cross-sectional and prospective observational design, included 252 patients who were admitted to our outpatient clinic...

OBJECTIVE: To determine and evaluate the maternal serum thiol/disulphide homeostasis in pregnancies complicated by neural tube defects via a novel method. METHODS: Seventy-three pregnant women with neural tube defects(study group) and seventy-one healthy control pregnant women(control group) were included in the study. A new and fully automated method was used to measure plasma native thiol, total thiol and disulfide levels, based on the reduction of dynamic disulfide bonds to functional thiol groups by sodium borohydrate...
