We report an unusual case of Cardiobacterium hominis bioprosthetic valve endocarditis presenting as septic arthritis. This remarkable presentation had clinical features consistent with endocarditis generally associated with highly virulent pathogens. A literature search has failed to disclose a report of septic arthiritis as a manifestation of C. hominis endocarditis.

Prevotella bivia is a gram-negative anaerobic bacteria traditionally classified in the genus Bacteroides, and usually reported in obstetric and gynecologic infections. To date, there has been only one description of infectious arthritis secondary to this germ. We report the first case of septic arthritis due to Prevotella bivia in a patient with severe, long-lasting rheumatoid arthritis (RA) treated with low doses of corticosteroids. RA is a well-known predisposing factor to septic arthritis, whose causes are multifactorial (general immunosuppression induced by the disease and its therapy, presence of prosthetic joints, etc...

OBJECTIVE: To assess differences in soluble tumor necrosis factor receptor 55 (sTNF-R55), sTNF-R75, and soluble interleukin 2 receptor (sIL-2R) in synovial fluid (SF) of patients with psoriatic arthritis (PsA), a seronegative inflammatory joint disease, in comparison with those of patients with rheumatoid arthiritis (RA) and osteoarthritis (OA). METHODS: sIL-R were measured in SF with commercial sandwich ELISA and the results correlated with serological and clinical disease activity variables...

Paper presents the data on the content of hypophysial-thyroid and hypophysial-adrenal systems' hormones obtained by means of radioimmune assay, and the data of timecourse hepatoscintibiligraphy with Tc 99 m TCK-15 of 94 patients (first group--48 patients with psoriatic arthiritis combined with chronic opisthorchiasis; second group--46 pure psoriatic arthritis patients). Statistically significant increase in the content of triiodinethyronine, thyroxine, hypophysial thyreotropic hormone, corticotropic hormone and significant reduction of cortizol and aldosteron contents were observed in case of mixed pathology...

Among 77 patients hospitalized with psoriasis, 30 (39%) had psoriatic arthritis. Arthiritis was more frequent (P less than 0.05) in those with extensive psoriasis (grades 3 and 4) than in those with less extensive psoriasis (grade 1 and 2). Temporally, flares in skin and joint disease were not closely related. The Moll-Wright classification of psoriatic arthritis into five clinical groups could be loosely applied to our patients. However, sacroiliitis (present in 33% of the patients) was seen in all five groups and was related to HLA-B27 antigen...

The illegitimate glycosphingolipid antigens of the P blood group system and of the Forssman (Fs) tissue antigen in adenocarcinoma which are foreign to the host suggest the self-nonself concept which applies also to numerous other diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, gluomerulonephritis, and idiopathic acute hemolytic anemia. In the presence of the glycosphingolipid antigens such as ABO, P, and Fs, the normal serum of the homozygote recessive precursor contains antibodies for the missing antigen(s)...

In vitro tests of lymphocyte function have been performed in 61 patients with ;classical' or ;definite' rheumatoid arthritis. In vitro lymphocyte function was assessed by lymphocyte transformation responses to phytohaemagglutinin (PHA), Pokeweed mitogen (PWM), Candida antigen, and herpes simplex type I (HSV1). Follow up data were available after 6 months of treatment in 32 of these patients. Spontaneous lymphocyte transformation was assessed in all patients. Results obtained in patients with rheumatoid arthiritis were compared to those seen in a normal control population...
