Hemophilia patients have a deficiency in or dysfunction of clotting factors, which can lead to a bleeding tendency. However, paradoxically, some hemophilia patients may also be at an increased risk of developing thrombotic events such as deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism. The pathophysiology of thrombosis in hemophilia patients is not fully understood, but it is thought to involve a complex interplay of various factors, including the severity of the hemophilia, the presence of other risk factors such as obesity, smoking, or the use of hormonal therapies, and the presence of certain genetic mutations that increase the risk of thrombosis...

BACKGROUND: The risk of recurrence in pulmonary embolism is the highest in the first week after the acute event. Although it decreases over time, it may remain high for months depending on compliance with treatment and the nature of the underlying risk factor. Our study aimed to identify risk factors that lead to recurrence in pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE) patients and establish an easy-to-use scoring system that determines the risk of recurrence after the first embolism. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated 1452 patients who were diagnosed with acute PTE between 7/1/2014 and 7/1/2019...

We investigated the effect of deep learning-based image reconstruction (DLIR) compared to iterative reconstruction on image quality in CT pulmonary angiography (CTPA) for suspected pulmonary embolism (PE). For 220 patients with suspected PE, CTPA studies were reconstructed using filtered back projection (FBP), adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction (ASiR-V 30%, 60% and 90%) and DLIR (low, medium and high strength). Contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) served as the primary parameter of objective image quality...

Although infections resulting from cosmetic surgery performed outside the United States have been regularly reported, deaths have rarely been identified. During 2009-2022, 93 U.S. citizens died after receiving cosmetic surgery in the Dominican Republic. The number of deaths increased from a mean of 4.1 per year during 2009-2018 to a mean of 13.0 during 2019-2022 with a peak in of 17 in 2020. A subset of post-cosmetic surgery deaths occurring during peak years was investigated, and most deaths were found to be the result of embolic events (fat emboli or venous thromboembolism) for which a high proportion of the patients who died had risk factors, including obesity and having multiple procedures performed during the same operation...

Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) may contribute to venous thromboembolism (VTE) with adverse effects on the course of COVID-19. The purpose of this study was to investigate an incidence and risk factors for VTE in patients hospitalized for COVID-19 in a non-intensive care unit (non-ICU). Consecutive adult patients with COVID-19 hospitalized from November 2021 to March 2022 in the isolation non-ICU at our center were included in the study...

OBJECTIVE: Whether obesity is associated with meningioma and the impact of obesity by gender has been debated. The primary objective of this study was to investigate differences in BMI between male and female patients undergoing craniotomy for meningioma and compare those with patients undergoing craniotomy for other intracranial tumors. The secondary objective was to compare meningioma location and progression-free survival (PFS) between obese and nonobese patients in a multi-institutional cohort...

Background: COVID-19 infection is associated with a high risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) events. VTE prophylaxis reduces the risk of these events. The optimal dose of VTE prophylaxis however remains uncertain. Objectives: To compare the incidence of VTE in patients treated with either standard dose VTE versus intermediate dose VTE prophylaxis. Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, we analyzed data from 1786 adult patients admitted into the hospital with polymerase chain reaction confirmed COVID-19 infection between April 2020 to September 2021...

Pancreatic pseudocysts are fluid-filled collections that can arise from acute or chronic pancreatitis and may lead to a range of complications, like rupture, infection, hemorrhage, etc. Morbid obesity may further complicate the diagnosis and management of such cases. The present report describes the case of a 26-year-old superobese female (BMI: 58 kg/m²) with a pancreatic pseudocyst that presented diagnostic challenges and mimicked pulmonary embolism when the pseudocyst had ruptured. The patient initially presented with persistent biliary colic due to gallstones...

The aim of this study was to evaluate differences in the clinical manifestations and outcomes in hospitalized patients with COVID-19 in a single Romanian center during four pandemic waves determined by different SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern (VOCs). A retrospective study on 9049 consecutive hospitalized adult patients was performed between 27 February 2020 and 31 March 2023. The study interval was divided into waves based on national data on SARS-CoV-2 VOCs' circulation. Multivariate logistic regression models were built, predicting death and complications as functions of comorbidities, therapy, wave, severity form, and vaccination status, and adjusted for ages ≥65 years...

The aim of the study was to determine the frequency of long-term cardiovascular symptoms in patients who had obstetric PE. METHODS: Cross-sectional study including patients who had PE during pregnancy or the puerperium.
