Guillain Barre syndrome (GBS) following Varicella zoster is a rare presentation and has only been reported in a few cases around the world. Of the reported cases, the type of GBS is not specified in the majority, and where specified is of the acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (AIDP) type. We report a case of acute motor axonal neuropathy (AMAN) type GBS following herpes zoster in a 27-year-old male who presented with bilateral lower limb weakness and left sided lower motor neuron type facial nerve palsy a week after herpes zoster infection...

UNLABELLED: The Coronavirus was first discovered in December 2019 and quickly it turned into a pandemic called coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The main symptoms of infection with this virus were constitutional and respiratory symptoms. However, one-third of COVID-19 patients also developed neurologic manifestations, including Guillan-Barre syndrome (GBS), which was one of the most critical complications. CASE PRESENTATION: In this paper, the authors present seven patients who suffered from GBS after being infected with the Coronavirus or in conjunction with the infection...

Leptomeningeal metastasis (LM) is an outcome associated with a terminal prognosis for a patient with metastatic cancer. Symptoms associated with this type of cancer progression can be subtle and nonspecific. Evaluation of LM occurs with a lumbar puncture (LP) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) can present with a similar presentation of neurological symptoms to LM. Additionally, both disease states may present with similar MRI findings. The LP can be an important diagnostic evaluation to differentiate LM and GBS...

The Zika virus is a mosquito-borne virus spread primarily by Aedes mosquitoes. Zika cases have been detected throughout the mosquito's range, with an epidemic occurring from 2015 to 2017 in Brazil. Many Zika cases are mild or asymptomatic, but infections in pregnant women can cause microcephaly in children, and a small percentage of cases result in Guillan-Barré syndrome. There is currently little systematic information surrounding the municipal spread of the Zika Virus in Brazil. This article uses coarsened exact matching with negative binomial estimation and ordinary least squares estimation to assess the determinants of Zika incidence across the ~280,000 cases confirmed and recorded by Brazil's Ministry of Health in 2016 and 2017...

BACKGROUND: Zika virus (ZIKV) is a mosquito-borne flavivirus classified in Flaviviridae family such as dengue (DENV), yellow fever, and West Nile virus. An outbreak of ZIKV infection can pose a major public health risk because the contagion is unpredictable and induces severe pathology such as Guillan-Barre syndrome and neonatal microcephaly. However, an authorized ZIKV vaccine is not yet available, while several vaccine candidates are under development. METHODS: In this study, we constructed a recombinant ZIKV vaccine (Z_EDIII) that includes ZIKV envelope protein domain III using E...

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is characterized by rapidly progressive and generally ascending symmetrical muscle weakness, accompanied by decreased or absent osteotendinous reflexes. The inflammatory process may affect the myelin or the axon. There are 4 clinical forms of GBS: 1) acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy, 2) acute motor axonal neuropathy, 3) acute sensory and motor axonal neuropathy, and 4) the Miller-Fisher variant, which is characterized by ophthalmoplegia, ataxia and areflexia, with little muscle weakness...

A number of neurological complications have been reported after the administration of flu vaccine, including Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), especially after vaccination against swine flu. Only facial nerve neuropathy has thus far been reported after vaccination against COVID-19. More recently, there was a case of an elderly woman with GBS. In our report, we describe a case of a 42-year-old, previously almost healthy male who developed sensory symptoms 14 days after the first dose of Pfizer vaccine. One week later, the patient developed right facial nerve palsy and lower limb weakness and was no longer able to walk...

Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) is currently the most frequent cause of acute flaccid paralysis on a global scale, being an autoimmune disorder wherein demyelination of the peripheral nerves occurs. Its main clinical features are a symmetrical ascending muscle weakness with reduced osteotendinous reflexes and variable sensory involvement. GBS most commonly occurs after an infection, especially viral (including COVID-19), but may also transpire after immunization with certain vaccines or in the development of specific malignancies...

Background: The ZIKA virus (ZIKV) belongs to the Flaviviridae family, was first isolated in the 1940s, and remained underreported until its global threat in 2016, where drastic consequences were reported as Guillan-Barre syndrome and microcephaly in newborns. Understanding molecular interactions of ZIKV proteins during the host infection is important to develop treatments and prophylactic measures; however, large-scale experimental approaches normally used to detect protein-protein interaction (PPI) are onerous and labor-intensive...

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) or acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (AIDP) is a rare autoimmune disorder in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the nerves. In this report, we present a case of a 15-month-old girl who presented with an inability to walk and support the vertical and sitting positions, pain in the lower limbs accompanied by grimaces, muscular weakness, and agitation due to gait disturbances. This is a unique case in that GBS affected a previously healthy girl and was associated with pneumonia and anemia as the disease progressed, causing an intriguing diagnosis...

Bullae autoimmune diseases can be induced by environmental factors in a genetically susceptible individual, and viruses may be important triggers for this process. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a multisystemic disease known for developing many types of skin lesions. However, little is known about post-COVID-19 manifestations. A previous healthy male patient, 43 years old, with resistant mediastinal Hodgkin's lymphoma stage II diagnosed in 2019, without treatment at the moment, developed monomorphic flaccid bullae on the trunk 40 days after testing positive for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)...

Campylobacter spp. are the leading cause of bacterium-derived gastroenteritis worldwide, impacting 96 million individuals annually. Unlike other bacterial pathogens of the gastrointestinal tract, Campylobacter spp. lack many of the classical virulence factors that are often associated with the ability to induce disease in humans, including an array of canonical secretion systems and toxins. Consequently, the clinical manifestations of human campylobacteriosis and its resulting gastrointestinal pathology are believed to be primarily due to the host immune response toward the bacterium...

Miller-Fisher syndrome (MFS) together with Guillan-Barré syndrome (GBS) and Bickerstaff brainstem encephalitis (BBE) are considered to form a continuous clinical spectrum of the same disease, possibly affecting the peripheral and/or central nervous systems, with monophasic symptoms. The frequency of overlapping clinical signs and the risk of recurrence are independent and very low, but no cases of GQ1b-seropositive recurrent MFS overlapping with GBS and BBE have been described so far. Here, we describe for the first time an atypical case of recurrent GQ1b-seropositive MFS overlapping GBS and BBE, 12 years after a previous GQ1b-seronegative typical MFS episode...

The outbreak of COVID-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2 has spread worldwide with a huge impact on the healthcare system. Compared to the previous coronaviruses-related pandemics, COVID-19 is more transmissible with potential systemic involvement and peculiar neurological manifestations, such as Guillan-Barrè syndrome up to critical illness myopathy, occurring in the intensive care setting. In this clinical scenario, people living with a neuromuscular disease (NMD) represent a vulnerable category with a high risk of a severe course of COVID-19...
