Background: Although end-stage renal disease (ESRD) is frequently used as an outcome marker for primary immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN), the clinical course after reaching ESRD is not well documented. This study examined patients' characteristics and survival in ESRD-related biopsy-proven IgAN in France. Methods: French Renal Epidemiology and Information Network Registry data from 2010 to 2014 were used to analyse patients' survival and outcome in incident ESRD patients >16 years of age with biopsy-proven primary IgAN, in comparison with other primary and secondary glomerulonephritis (GN), adult polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) or diabetes...

Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES), also known as reversible posterior leukoencephalopathy syndrome, is a neurological entity characterized by acute change in consciousness, visual impairment, headache, and seizures. It is associated with autoimmune disease, immunosuppressive agents, organ transplantation, acute glomerulonephritis, and sepsis. Typically, vasogenic edema is seen in the white matter of parieto-occipital lobes but can also involve atypical locations such as frontal lobes, thalamus, basal ganglia, and gray matter...

Common side effects of mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) are diarrhea, leukopenia, and infectious complication. The polymorphisms of enzymes affecting MMF clearance could be related to MMF toxicity, and in vitro study revealed that high MMF levels might cause endothelial dysfunction. A 7-year-old Korean male with end-stage renal disease on peritoneal dialysis due to mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis received a kidney transplantation (KT) from a deceased donor, and immunosuppressive medications including MMF, tacrolimus, and methylprednisolone were started after KT...

Rationale & Objective: Although end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) adversely affects fertility, pregnancies can occur among women receiving dialysis. ESKD increases the risk for adverse pregnancy outcomes and little is known about contraceptive use in women undergoing dialysis. Study Design: Retrospective cohort study. Setting & Participants: Using the US Renal Data System covering January 1, 2005, through December 31, 2014, we evaluated for each calendar year women who for the entire year were aged 15 to 44 years, receiving dialysis, and with Medicare as the primary payer...

AIM: There is paucity of data on the epidemiology of end-stage kidney disease from South Asia and South-East Asia. The objective of this study was to assess the etiology, practice patterns & disease burden and growth of end stage kidney disease in the region comparing the economies. METHODS: The national nephrology societies of the region; responded to questionnaire; based on latest registries, acceptable community-based studies and society perceptions. A 72-year-old woman with membranous glomerulonephritis and failed renal transplant on peritoneal dialysis presented with bilateral vision loss. She reported several months of diminishing right eye vision that worsened after cataract extraction. On presentation, visual acuity was hand motion in the right and 20/100 in the left eye with a right afferent pupillary defect. Confrontation visual fields were constricted bilaterally. Intraocular pressure was 23 in the right eye, and there was diffuse right eye central corneal opacity with iris neovascularization...

BACKGROUND: Metabolic acidosis (MA) is one of the most common consequences of CKD. MA is also a risk factor of CKD progression and increased mortality in these patients. AIM: The aim of this retrospective, cross-sectional study was to assess the prevalence of MA in different stages of CKD and renal replacement therapy (RRT) modalities - haemodialysis (HD) and peritoneal dialysis (PD). Additionally, the relationship between the prevalence of MA and aetiology of kidney disease was analysed...

BACKGROUND Encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis (EPS) is a rare, life-threatening, and serious complication of long-term peritoneal dialysis (PD). No evidence-based management strategy has been established until now. Surgical management, including enterolysis and excision of the sclerotic and obstructing adhesions, should be considered as soon as conservative management fails to work. We report a case of EPS soon after transplantation in a patient with end-stage kidney disease who had been on long-term PD. CASE REPORT A 26-year-old man had been found to have advanced chronic kidney disease secondary to glomerulonephritis on pre-employment investigation...

We analyze the survival and characteristics of patients on peritoneal dialysis (PD) with primary GN (PGN), and compare their results with other kidney patients. METHODS: This prospective observational study took place from 1995 to 2014. We included all incident patients who were initiated on the technique in the Levante registry...

PURPOSE: Early technique failure is a serious complication for peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. The study aimed to examine the incidence, causes, and risk factors associated with early technique failure.   METHODS: This retrospective study included all incident PD patients in a hospital in Singapore from 2013 to 2017. The primary outcome was early technique failure, which was defined as transfer to hemodialysis for ≥ 30 days or death, within the first year of PD initiation. Secondary outcomes were death, technique failure due to PD infection, and death-censored technique failure...

A 49-year-old woman developed eosinophilic peritonitis 2 months after starting continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis because of congenital right kidney hypoplasia and chronic glomerulonephritis. This was shown to have been induced by sucroferric oxyhydroxide, an iron-based phosphate binder, using a drug-induced lymphocyte stimulation test. Her eosinophilic peritonitis was improved after stopping the administration of sucroferric oxyhydroxide without providing any immunosuppressive agents.

BACKGROUND: Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is the first-line renal replacement therapy for end-stage renal failure patients in Hong Kong. Abdominal wall hernia is a common mechanical complication of PD, and early surgical repair has been advocated to reduce complications. This study aims to review the outcomes of tension-free mesh repair of inguinal hernia in PD patients. METHODS: All PD patients who underwent elective repair of inguinal hernia from 2009 to 2015 were identified from a single centre for retrospective analysis...

BACKGROUND: In Japan, the medical expenditures associated with dialysis have garnered considerable interest; however, a cost-effectiveness evaluation of peritoneal dialysis (PD) is yet to be evaluated. In particular, the health economics of the "PD first" concept, which can be advantageous for clinical practice and healthcare systems, must be evaluated. METHODS: This multicenter study investigated the cost-effectiveness of PD. The major effectiveness indicator was quality-adjusted life year (QALY), with a preference-based utility value based on renal function, and the cost indicator was the amount billed for a medical service at each medical institution for qualifying illnesses...

The studies of PD treatment in pediatric AKI in China have rarely been reported in English literature. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the efficacy and the outcome of PD in pediatric patients with AKI. Decoy receptor 3 (DcR3), also known as tumor necrosis factor receptor superfamily member 6b (TNFRSF6B), was recently identified as a novel biomarker for predicting progression of kidney diseases with potential immune modulation. The purpose of this review is to discuss the current evidence related to DcR3 in kidney diseases and to compare the differences between human and animal studies both in vivo and in vitro. High serum DcR3 predicts the occurrence of peritonitis in patients receiving chronic peritoneal dialysis and is positively correlated with inflammatory markers such as interleukin-6, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, and adhesion molecules in patients on maintenance hemodialysis (HD)...
