The hallux valgus is a pathologic condition in the forefoot that often causes pain and functional limitations. Assessing all deformity components, such as the distal metatarsal articular angle (DMAA) is essential to hallux valgus treatment. Nevertheless, interobserver agreement of DMAA is poor on plain radiographs. The present study compared computed tomographic (CT) 3-dimensional (3D) reconstruction with plain radiographic measurements for measuring the DMAA. We included 43 consecutive patients (77 feet), diagnosed with hallux valgus at the orthopedic outpatient clinic at Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre (Porto Alegre, Brazil) from April 2014 to June 2015 in our prospective study...

BACKGROUND: As hallux valgus (HV) progresses, the first metatarsal drifts medially and the subsequent lateral drift of the sesamoids results in intersesamoidal crista erosion. This study aimed to provide a novel method of assessing crista erosion and determine if there is a relationship between that erosion and an increase in the distal metatarsal articular angle (DMAA). METHODS: The DMAA and size of the intersesamoidal crista was measured on the first metatarsals of 120 adult modern human individuals...

BACKGROUND: The hallux valgus interphalangeus (HVI) deformity is described as rare, but improved outcomes in hallux valgus (HV) surgery is associated with its surgical correction via an Akin osteotomy. The hypothesis of this study is that HVI is common and makes a significant contribution to the total valgus deformity of the hallux (TVDH). METHODS: 285 pre-operative foot radiographs (193 with HV, 92 non-HV), utilising standardised radiographic and measurement techniques, were analysed retrospectively...

BACKGROUND: The developing fetus and pregnant woman can be exposed to a variety of environmental chemicals that may adversely affect their health. Moreover, environmental exposure and risk disparities are associated with different social determinants, including socioeconomic status (SES) and demographic indicators. Our aim was to investigate whether and how maternal concentrations of a large panel of persistent and non-persistent environmental chemicals vary according to sociodemographic and lifestyle characteristics in a large pregnancy and birth cohort...

BACKGROUND: Many factors are considered predictors of recurrence after hallux valgus (HV) surgery, including preoperative distal metatarsal articular angle (DMAA). The restoration of the bone and joint alignment would be more important than realigning the cartilaginous surface of the metatarsal head. Therefore, is DMAA correction essential for a good clinical and radiological results after HV surgery? This study aims to illustrate the results of percutaneous forefoot surgery (PFS) for correction of HV deformity without DMAA correction...

BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) represents one of the most innovative surgical treatments of hallux valgus (HV). However, long-term outcomes still remain a matter of discussion within the orthopaedic community. The purpose of this longitudinal prospective study was to evaluate radiographic and functional outcomes in patients with mild-to-severe HV who underwent Reverdin-Isham and Akin percutaneous osteotomy, following exostosectomy and lateral release. METHODS: Eighty patients with mild-to-severe symptomatic HV were treated by MIS...

In June 2012 DMAA (1,3-dimethylamylamine), an ephedrine-like vasoconstricting substance which had been included in many popular sports supplements, became a scheduled substance in Australia, following bans in several other countries. The underlying rationale for this ban was that DMAA use is unsafe. This paper aimed to critically review the available evidence on the acute and/or long-term harms of DMAA. Using five research databases (PubMed, Embase, ProQuest Health and Medical Complete, and Web of Science) and the key terms 'methylhexaneamine', 'DMAA', 'dimethylamylamine', '1,3-dimethylpentylamine' and '2-amino-4-methylhexane', 842 articles were identified once duplicates removed...

INTRODUCTION: Currently there is no consensus regarding the use of bilateral simultaneous percutaneous surgery for Hallux valgus treatment. Although the technique described in M. Prado's book, recommends operating only one foot at a time there are no published studies confirming it. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether there is a difference between the results of patients that have been percutaneously operated on one foot and those operated on both feet at the same surgical time for mild to moderate Hallux valgus correction...

The concentrations of arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd) in the tobacco leaves, ash and smoke of 10 kinds of cigarettes collected from different countries worldwide were determined by ICP-MS after microwave-assisted digestion. Total As and Cd concentrations in the tobacco leaves ranged from 0.20 to 0.63 and 1.8 to 9.9 mg kg(-1), respectively. By the speciation analysis of As in tobacco leaves and ash by HPLC-ICP-MS following acid extraction, arsenite [As(III)] and arsenate [As(V)] were determined and trace amounts of monomethylarsonic acid (MMAA), dimethylarsinic acid (DMAA), trimethylarsine oxide (TMAO), tetramethylarsonium (TeMA) and some unidentified As species were also found...

BACKGROUND: Scarf osteotomy has been used in hallux valgus surgery due to its large fixation surface for screws and low postoperative complications. However, screws may cause skin irritation from their head, which may require an additional surgical procedure to remove. METHODS: This study included 115 patients (106 females and 9 males, 115 feet) who underwent hallux valgus correction with a scarf osteotomy using bioabsorbable screws between September 2010 and September 2012...

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous surgery to correct deformities of the forefoot presents the advantages of using a minimal incision, which involves less soft tissue damage and less risk of wound complications. For severe deformities, percutaneous techniques have not been proven as effective. We propose a technique for the treatment of severe hallux valgus. METHODS: In a sample of 52 feet operated on 48 patients, we performed a double percutaneous osteotomy (closure proximal osteotomy and a distal Akin) or triple when a Reverdin-Isham osteotomy was added...

High fasting plasma concentrations of isoleucine, phenylalanine, and tyrosine have been associated with increased risk of hyperglycaemia and incidence of type 2 diabetes. Whether these associations are diet or metabolism driven is unknown. We examined how the dietary protein source affects the postprandial circulating profile of these three diabetes associated amino acids (DMAAs) and tested whether the postprandial DMAA profiles are associated with fasting glycaemia. We used a crossover design with twenty-one healthy individuals and four different isocaloric test meals, containing proteins from different dietary sources (dairy, fish, meat, and plants)...

We describe herein a crystallographic and NMR study of the secondary structural attributes of a β-turn-containing tetra-peptide, Boc-Dmaa-D-Pro-Acpc-Leu-NMe2, which was recently reported as a highly effective catalyst in the atroposelective bromination of 3-arylquinazolin-4(3H)-ones. Inquiries pertaining to the functional consequences of residue substitutions led to the discovery of a more selective catalyst, Boc-Dmaa-D-Pro-Acpc-Leu-OMe, the structure of which was also explored. This new lead catalyst was found to exhibit a type I'β-turn secondary structure both in the solid state and in solution, a structure that was shown to be an accessible conformation of the previously reported catalyst, as well...

A polymer-coated quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) sensor has been developed for the detection of Au(III) ions in a HCl aqueous solution. Poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide) (poly(DMAA)) gel was used as a sensing material. The poly(DMAA) gel adsorbs Au(III) ions in the HCl aqueous solution, whereas it is inactive toward most other metal ions. The equilibrium adsorption of Au(III) ions onto the poly(DMAA) gel can be expressed by the Henry-type isotherm. The oscillation behavior of the poly(DMAA)-coated QCM sensor was investigated, and linear relationships between the resonance frequency shift and the concentration of Au(III) ions were obtained for concentrations of less than 0...

PURPOSE: During growth, hallux valgus could present associated with flatfoot. Considering the current disagreement about correction of hallux valgus during growth and the lack of reports about simultaneous correction of hallux valgus associated with flexible flatfoot, we present simultaneous treatment of both deformities during growth combining subtalar arthroeresis and SERI first metatarsal osteotomy, reporting results at an average five-year follow-up. METHODS: Thirty-two children (64 feet, age range 8-12 years) affected by hallux valgus associated with flexible flatfoot underwent surgical treatment combining SERI first metatarsal osteotomy and subtalar arthroereisis with bioabsorbable endorthotic implant...

A new laboratory-made Zn-ferrite (ZnFe2O4) binding gel is fully tested using Diffusive Gradient in Thin films (DGT) probes to measure total As [including inorganic As(III) and As(V), as well as MonoMethyl Arsenic Acid (MMAA(V)) and DiMethyl Arsenic Acid (DMAA(V))] in river waters and sediment pore waters. The synthesis of the binding gel is easy, cheap and its insertion into the acrylamide gel is not problematic. An important series of triplicate tests have been carried out to validate the use of the Zn-ferrite binding gel in routine for several environmental matrixes studies, in order to test: (i) the effect of pH on the accumulation efficiency of inorganic As species; (ii) the reproducibility of the results; (iii) the accumulation efficiency of As species; (iv) the effects of the ionic strength and possible competitive anions; and (v) the uptake and the elution efficiency of As species after accumulation in the binding gel...

A number of dietary supplements used for weight loss and athletic performance enhancement have been recently shown to contain a variety of stimulants, for which there is a lack of pharmacological and toxicological information. One concern for these emerging compounds is their potential to inhibit metabolic enzymes in the liver such as cytochromes P450 (CYP), which can lead to unexpected interactions among dietary supplements, drugs, and other xenobiotics. In this study, inhibition of human recombinant CYP2D6 and CYP3A4 by 27 amine stimulants associated with dietary supplements and their analogs was evaluated by luminescence assays...
