Changes of the defect structure of silicon p-type crystal surface layer under the influence of plastic deformation and high temperature annealing in oxygen atmosphere were investigated by deep-level capacitance-modulation spectroscopy (DLCMS) and IR spectroscopy of molecules and atom vibrational levels. Special role of dislocations in the surface layer of silicon during the formation of its energy spectrum and rebuilding the defective structure was established. It is shown that the concentration of linear defects (N ≥ 10(4) cm(-2)) enriches surface layer with electrically active complexes (dislocation-oxygen, dislocation-vacancy, and dislocation-interstitial atoms of silicon) which are an effective radiative recombination centers...

Bioactive polymeric composites have received great attention for their capability to remineralize the dentin tissue. This study was aimed at evaluating if a poly(HEMA-co-TEGDMA) resin (HEMA: 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate; TEGDMA: triethyleneglycol dimethacrylate) may increase the in vitro apatite forming ability of a calcium silicate cement (CaSi), in view of developing a hydrophilic light-curable composite bio-remineralizing restorative material (R-CaSi). To this purpose, the following experiments were carried out: (1) In vitro apatite forming ability of R-CaSi and CaSi was comparatively assessed by micro-Raman spectroscopy after immersion of the cement disks in Dulbecco's Phosphate Buffered Saline (DPBS) at 37°C for 1-28days; (2) Previously demineralized human dentin slices were soaked for 7days in close contact with the CaSi and R-CaSi cements as well as poly(HEMA), poly(TEGDMA) and poly(HEMA-co-TEGDMA), and then were comparatively analyzed by IR spectroscopy...

Bacterial cellulose membrane is a biomaterial with high value in the biomedical field. Many groups have been making efforts to promote chemical modifications of its structure and, consequently, add new characteristics. Recently, our group has developed a methodology to insert monoester succinic acid in bacterial cellulose membrane without disrupting the microfibril network and bind a protein on it. Considering the role of carbohydrates in the molecular recognition process in biological events, we continued these studies by inserting covalently multiples copies of aryl monosaccharide to bacterial cellulose succinylated and to study the in vitro tissue compatibility using fibroblasts...

We describe an experimental setup suitable for the measurement of photomodulated IR reflection/absorption spectra of monolayers on a flat gold substrate at temperatures from room to 14 K. Results obtained for a monolayer of C18D37SH on gold are shown and compared with IR spectra of C18D37SH in a KBr pellet at these temperatures. Band widths are reduced by only about 10%, but upon cooling below 100 - 150 K, the frequencies and intensities of νas(CD3) and νas(CD2) bands in the C-D stretching region in both types of spectra undergo dramatic reversible changes of unknown origin...

BACKGROUND: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrinopathy affecting reproductive-aged women. The pathophysiology of this syndrome is still not completely understood but recent evidence suggests that the intra-uterine environment may be a key factor in the pathogenesis of PCOS, in particular, hyperexposure of the foetus to androgens. High concentrations of maternal serum testosterone during pregnancy have been shown to influence behaviour during childhood, the prevalence of autism disorders and anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) concentrations in adolescence...
