BACKGROUND: Vitamin D exerts multiple beneficial effects in humans, including neuronal, immune, and bone homeostasis and the regulation of cardiovascular functions. Recent studies correlate vitamin D with cancer cell growth and survival, but meta-analyses on this topic are often not consistent. METHODS: A systematic search of the PubMed database and the Clinical Trial Register was performed to identify all potentially relevant English-language scientific papers containing original research articles on the effects of vitamin D on human health...

Cardiovascular diseases are the first cause of death in developed countries. Using electrocardiographic (ECG), blood pressure (BP) and respiratory flow signals, we obtained parameters for classifying cardiomyopathy patients. 42 patients with ischemic (ICM) and dilated (DCM) cardiomyopathies were studied. The left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) was used to stratify patients with low risk (LR: LVEF>35%, 14 patients) and high risk (HR: LVEF≤ 35%, 28 patients) of heart attack. RR, SBP and TTot time series were extracted from the ECG, BP and respiratory flow signals, respectively...

INTRODUCTION: Although the onset of Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TTC) can be triggered by an acute, intense emotional stress, the exact pathogenic mechanisms still remain undefined. PRESENTATION: A 58-year-old female was sent by ambulance to the Emergency Department (ED) for chest pain and ST elevations on ECG. Her chest pain began 3 hours before on admission after a domestic argument. Transthoracic echocardiogram showed severe systolic dysfunction with an ejection fraction of 20%...

Cardiac resynchronization therapy is a non-pharmacological treatment for patients with dilated cardiomyophaty and congestive heart failure. The success of this therapy depends of permanent biventricular stimulation. We report an 84 year-old man, with intermittent loss of biventricular pacemaker stimulation despite having adequate sensing and stimulation thresholds in the right atrium and both ventricles. The problem was solved after correcting some programming parameters.

In present study we describe the clinical case of successful treatment of dilatation cardiomyophaty based on dilatrend using. 32 years old patient with acute heart failure and rhythm dysfunction was active user of alcohol since 1993. At the beginning of treatment 25 mg of dilatrend twice per day was used. The dose was increased monthly by 2.5 mg. After 4 months of treatment clinical signs of disease were eliminated at the daily dose 50 mg of dilatrend. In order to recover from arrhythmia on the seventh month of treatment cardioversion was successfully carried out...

Triglycerides and phospholipids extracted from endomyocardial biopsy specimens were quantitated with sensitive photometric methods and the fatty acid composition of phospholipids was determined after separation of the methyl esters by gas chromatography. The degree of triglyceride accumulation was expressed as the molar ratio triglyceride/phospholipid since in most cases the phospholipid concentration is relatively constant. The representativity of the analysis of endomyocardial biopsy was investigated by comparing lipid analyses of large and small myocardial specimens obtained at necropsy...
