INTRODUCTION: There are only few reports regarding the use of intragastric-balloons (IGB®) to achieve weight loss and subsequently decrease surgical complications. In this study, we try to assess whether presurgery weight loss using IGB decreases the postsurgical mortality after bariatric surgery. METHODS: This is a prospective case-control study. We matched 1:1 by gender, age (± 10 y-o) and type of surgery (sleeve resection [LSG] or gastric bypass [LGBP]), matching cases (A) and controls (H, from a historic cohort)...

BACKGROUND: Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) accounts for nearly 15% of all cases of cancer. As a type of highly invasive tumors, SCLC has high degree of malignancy, early and extensive metastasis, and is sensitive to chemotherapy and radiotherapy. The early treatment response rate of SCLC is high but it can also relapse rapidly without any treatment. Its median survival time is merely four to six months. Although many studies on SCLC have been conducted in recent years, its clinical treatment strategies have remained unchanged...

Anastomotic leakage is a major postoperative complication after intestinal surgery leading to increased risk of morbidity and mortality. Omentoplasty has been evaluated to prevent anastomotic leakage in several studies. However, there is no consensus regarding whether or not omentoplasty should be used to decrease the rate of anastomotic leakage after intestinal resection. A prospective, randomized study was conducted to evaluate the influence of omentoplasty on anastomotic leakage after intestinal resection...

BACKGROUND: Depression and chronic pain are the two most important causes of disability (Global Burden of Disease Study 2013). They occur together more frequently than expected and both conditions have been shown to be co-morbid with cardiovascular disease. Although shared socio-demographic risk factors (e.g. gender, deprivation) might explain the co-morbidity of these three conditions, we hypothesised that these three long-term, highly prevalent conditions co-occur and may be due to shared familial risk, and/or genetic factors...

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Delayed treatment failure occurs in a significant proportion of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients treated with tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF) antagonists. Identification of predictors of loss of response (LOR) may help to optimize therapy. We sought to determine whether body composition parameters at the commencement of anti-TNF therapy were associated with earlier treatment failure. SUBJECTS/METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed on 68 patients who had undergone cross-sectional abdominal imaging coincident with the commencement of anti-TNF drugs...
