Ion concentration in liposomal drugs is important for drug stability and drug release profile. However, quantifying ion concentration in liposomal drugs is challenging due to the absence of chromophores or fluorophores of ions and the efficiency of their release from the liposome structure. To address these issues, a method based on reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) coupled with a charged aerosol detector (CAD) has been developed to determine total, internal, and external ions in drug-loaded liposomal products...

The production of high-performance starch-based packaging films by extrusion blowing is challenging, ascribed to poor processability of the blend precursors. In this study, a new strategy of mechanical activation (MA)-enhanced metal-organic coordination was proposed to improve the processability of starch (St)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) blend precursor, with calcium acetate (CA) as a chelating agent and glycerol as a plasticizer. MA pretreatment activated the hydroxyl groups of starch and PVA for constructing strong metal-organic coordination between CA and St/PVA during reactive extrusion, which effectively enhanced the melt processing properties of the blend precursor, contributing to the fabrication of high-performance St/PVA films by the extrusion-blowing method...

Concrete cracks and local damage can affect the bond performance between concrete and steel bars, thereby reducing the durability of reinforced concrete structures. Compared with general concrete crack repair methods, biomineralization repair not only has effective bonding capabilities but is also particularly environmentally friendly. Therefore, this study aimed to apply biomineralization technology to repair damaged fiber-reinforced lightweight aggregate concrete (LWAC). Two groups of LWAC specimens were prepared...

Most shape memory polymers apply glass transition or crystallization of domains to fix temporary shapes and shape recovery is induced by heating, which hinders their application under heat-intolerant conditions. Moreover, the permanent shapes of polymers normally cannot be altered arbitrarily after fabrication. Herein, we present a novel shape memory hydrogel with a remodelable permanent shape and programmable cold-induced shape recovery behavior. Poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) hydrogel is prepared in the presence of diethylenetriamine (DETA) and subsequently treated with calcium acetate (Ca(Ac)2 )...

Chromium is a typical toxic pollution in sewage sludge incineration flue gas. Cr removal from flue gas is a challenge due to the high toxicity and valence variability of chromium. Ca-based sorbents, including CG-CaO, CA-CaO, and CCi-CaO, were developed for Cr capture by calcining calcium D-gluconate monohydrate, calcium acetate hydrate, and calcium citrate tetrahydrate, respectively. CG-CaO, CA-CaO, and CCi-CaO exhibit better Cr removal performance than traditional CaO. CA-CaO shows superior Cr adsorption ability due to the large BET surface area and pore volume...

The micro-arc oxidation process was used to apply a ceramic oxide coating on a pure titanium substrate using calcium acetate and sodium dihydrogen phosphate as an electrolyte. The influence of the current frequency and duty ratio on the surface morphology, phase composition, wear behavior, and corrosion resistance were analyzed by employing a scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffractometer, ball-on-disk apparatus, and potentiodynamic polarization, respectively. Analyses of the surface and cross-sectional morphologies revealed that the MAO films prepared via a low current frequency (100 Hz) and a high duty ratio (60%) had a lower porosity and were more compact...

A promising method for improving the functional properties of calcium-phosphate coatings is the incorporation of various antibacterial additives into their structure. The microbial contamination of a superficial wound is inevitable, even if the rules of asepsis and antisepsis are optimally applied. One of the main problems is that bacteria often become resistant to antibiotics over time. However, this does not apply to certain elements, chemical compounds and drugs with antimicrobial properties. In this study, the fabrication and properties of zinc-containing calcium-phosphate coatings that were formed via micro-arc oxidation from three different electrolyte solutions are investigated...

BACKGROUND: Hyperphosphataemia is a common complication of kidney disease. Current dialysis techniques do not provide enough phosphorus clearance, hence the need to use phosphorus binders. Treatment options include calcium carbonate, calcium acetate, lanthanum carbonate, sevelamer hydrochloride and iron-based binders. Patients receiving peritoneal dialysis (PD) with sustained elevated ferritin levels exceeding 800 ng/mL are at a higher risk of death. We identify PD patients treated with iron-based binders and compare ferritin and risk of iron accumulation to patients treated with non-iron-based binders...

This study examined the physicochemical effects of the fortification of noodles with 0.25-1.00% ( w / w ) calcium salts, viz. calcium acetate, calcium carbonate, calcium citrate, and calcium lactate. Fortification with calcium citrate, calcium acetate, and calcium carbonate increased the pH and breaking force of the dried noodles. However, the fortification of noodles with any concentration of calcium did not increase the extent of elongation of the control raw noodles. The L* and b* values of the raw and dried noodle color increased with increasing concentrations of calcium salts, except for noodles with added calcium citrate...

A novel method for hydroxyapatite fiber preparation with highly large-scale production prospects is of paramount importance but remains particularly difficult. Here, group replacement-rearrangement-triggered linear-assembly nonaqueous precipitation synthesis has been proposed for hydroxyapatite fibers under mild conditions. Pure hydroxyapatite fibers can be fabricated taking disodium hydrogen phosphate, calcium acetate, and glycerol as the phosphorus source, calcium source, and solvent, respectively. Single hexagonal crystal structures of hydroxyapatite fibers growing along the c -axis and preferential growth of the (002) crystal plane similar to the layered stacking structure of an adult bone have been confirmed by XRD refinement tests and calculation, TEM electron diffraction calibration, and FE-SEM...

The detrimental effects of sand storms on agriculture, human health, transportation network, and infrastructures pose serious threats in many countries worldwide. Hence, wind erosion is considered a global challenge. An environmental-friendly method to suppress wind erosion is to employ microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP). However, the by-products of ureolysis-based MICP, such as ammonia, are not favorable when produced in large volumes. This study introduces two calcium formate-bacteria compositions for non-ureolytic MICP and comprehensively compares their performance with two calcium acetate-bacteria compositions, all of which do not produce ammonia...

Activated sludge from municipal wastewater treatment processes can be used directly for the production of biodegradable polyesters from the family of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs). However, municipal activated sludge typically cannot accumulate PHAs to very high levels and often low yields of polymer produced on substrate are observed. In the present work, it was found that the presence of calcium promotes selective growth and enrichment of the PHA-storing biomass fraction and significantly improved both PHA contents and yields...
