PURPOSE: To study multimodal imaging features of polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) associated with central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) in the same eye. METHODS: A retrospective observational study of cases of suspected PCV which underwent indocyanine green angiography, fundus fluorescein angiography and optical coherence tomography was done, to look for simultaneous typical CSC-like active leak in the same eye. The relevant history, best-corrected visual acuity, optical coherence tomography, fundus fluorescein angiography, and indocyanine green angiography findings were analyzed...

The aim of this study was to document the haematological profile of pregnant ewes throughout gestation. Sheep were divided into three groups (n = 8 per group): non-pregnant, singleton, or twin pregnancy. Blood samples were collected every 14 days from day 55 of gestation for haemoglobin concentration; packed cell volume; total protein; and albumin concentration. On days 55 and 125 of gestation blood was collected for trace element estimation: soluble copper and zinc; glutathione peroxidase (GSHPx); and methylmalonic acid (MMA)...

BACKGROUND: Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is a demyelinating disorder of the central nervous system caused by reactivation of the JC-virus and is in most cases associated with underlying immunosuppression. Acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) and hematological malignancies are well-known predisposing factors for PML. However, in the past ten years, various pharmacological agents have been associated with increased risk of PML. Based on the phenomenology PML can be divided into the cerebral form and the rare cerebellar form...

For high-risk low-grade gliomas (LGGs), adjuvant radiotherapy (RT) with procarbazine/lomustine/vincristine (PCV) chemotherapy increases overall survival (OS) over RT alone. However, in practice, temozolomide (TMZ) is often used instead of PCV. Using the National Cancer Data Base (NCDB), we provide the first investigation of practice patterns and outcomes of chemoradiotherapy with single-agent chemotherapy (SAC, analogous to TMZ) or multi-agent chemotherapy (MAC, analogous to PCV) for LGG. Patients with high-risk Grade II LGGs were queried in the NCDB...

Porcine diseases associated with porcine circovirus 2 (PCV-2) infection have resulted in significant economic losses worldwide. A real-time recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) assay was developed to detect PCV-2 using primers and an exo probe specific for the ORF2 gene. The reaction process can be completed in 20 min at 38 °C. The assay only detects PCV-2, as there was no cross-reaction with other pathogens important in pigs. Using the PCV-2 genomic DNA as template, the analytical sensitivity of the real-time RPA was 103 copies...

In 2011, the 7-valent conjugated pneumococcal vaccine (PCV7) was replaced by the 10-valent vaccine (PCV10) and universal hepatitis B vaccination has been introduced in the Netherlands. A questionnaire study was conducted to assess the tolerability of DTaP-IPV-Hib + PCV7 (PCV7-cohort), DTaP-IPV-Hib + PCV10 (PCV10-cohort), and DTaP-IPV-Hib-HepB + PCV10 (HepB-cohort). Parents were asked to report in questionnaires local reactions and systemic adverse events (AEs) before and after vaccination of their infant at 2, 3, 4, and 11 months of age...

REVIEW
Joachim Denner, Annette Mankertz
Allotransplantation and xenotransplantation may be associated with the transmission of pathogens from the donor to the recipient. Whereas in the case of allotransplantation the transmitted microorganisms and their pathogenic effect are well characterized, the possible influence of porcine microorganisms on humans is mostly unknown. Porcine circoviruses (PCVs) are common in pig breeds and they belong to porcine microorganisms that still have not been fully addressed in terms of evaluating the potential risk of xenotransplantation using pig cells, tissues, and organs...

Elevated blood homocysteine (Hcy) level is frequently observed in aged individuals and those with age-related vascular diseases. However, its effect on peripheral microcirculation is still not fully understood. Using in vivo zebrafish model, the degree of Hcy-induced peripheral microcirculation dysfunction is assessed in this study with a proposed dimensionless velocity parameter V¯CV/V¯PCV, where V¯CV and V¯PCV represent the peripheral microcirculation perfusion and the systemic perfusion levels, respectively...

BACKGROUND: Classical swine fever (CSF) is a highly contagious fatal infectious disease caused by classical swine fever virus (CSFV). A better understanding of CSFV replication is important for the study of pathogenic mechanism of CSF. With the development of novel RNA in situ Hybridization method, quantitatively localization and visualization of the virus RNA molecular in cultured cell or tissue section becomes very important tool to address these pivotal pathogenic questions. In this study, we established ViewRNA ISH method to reveal the dynamic distribution of CSFV RNA in PK15 cells...

BACKGROUND: Pneumococcal vaccines, including pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPV) and pneumococcal conjugated vaccine (PCV), are important in preventing invasive pneumococcal disease. We analyzed the pneumococcal vaccination rate, efficacy and durability in patients with heterotaxy. METHODS: All patients with heterotaxy and CCHD who were followed at our institution between 2010 and 2015 were included. Pneumococcal vaccine status and geometric mean concentration (GMC) of serotypes 6B, 14, 19F, and 23F were analyzed...

The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of salvianolate on perioperative oxidative stress and plasma Intermedin/adrenomedullin 2 (IMD/ADM2) in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). The clinical data of 108 patients with AMI treated by PCI were retrospectively analyzed. According to the use of salvianolate in perioperative period, the patients were divided into the study group (n=62) and the control group (n=46). The control group was given routine treatment while the study group was given routine treatment combined with intravenous infusion of salvianolate (200 mg administered once at 24 h before operation, once/day after operation, 1 week later, the curative effect was observed)...

A molecular survey was conducted to provide baseline information on the prevalence, genetic diversity and potential clinical impacts of blood-borne and enteric protozoans in native wild mammals from the Northern Territory (NT). A total of 209 blood and 167 faecal samples were collected from four target species; the northern brown bandicoot (Isoodon macrourus), common brushtail possum (Trichosurus vulpecula), northern quoll (Dasyurus hallucatus) and brush-tailed rabbit-rat (Conilurus penicillatus). Blood samples were screened by PCR at the 18S rRNA gene for trypanosomes, piroplasms and haemogregarines, with faecal samples tested for Cryptosporidium spp...

Marburg virus (MARV), which is one of the most virulent agents in the world, causes lethal haemorrhagic fever in humans and nonhuman primates (NHPs) with a mortality rate of up to 90%. Currently, there is no effective treatment or approved vaccine for MARV for human use to control disease outbreak and spread. Virus-like particles (VLPs), which are morphologically identical to the native infectious virus particle, are efficacious as vaccines against many viruses, including human papilloma virus (HPV), porcine circovirus (PCV) type 2 and hepatitis B virus (HBV)...
