BACKGROUND: The ARTISTIC (A Randomised Trial In Screening To Improve Cytology) trial originally reported after two rounds of primary cervical screening with human papillomavirus (HPV). Extended follow-up of the randomised trial cohort through a third round could provide valuable insight into the duration of protection of a negative HPV test, which could allow extended screening intervals. If HPV primary screening is to be considered in the national programme, then determining its cost-effectiveness is key, and a detailed economic analysis using ARTISTIC data is needed...

BACKGROUND: mammography screening in premenopausal women is still the object of controversy and the cost and harms-benefit balance is lower than the one observed for women aged 50 years or more. The reasons are the lower screening sensitivity and the lower risk of occurrence of breast cancer at younger ages. For these reasons, an annual interval is suggested for this age group, and a lower positive predictive value of the recall rate is observed in screening practice. Harms of screening are false positive rates and overdiagnosis (that is an exceeding number of cases over the women's lifetime ascribable to early diagnosis)...

INTRODUCTION: It is not clear whether high mammographic density (MD) is equally associated with all subtypes of breast cancer (BC). We investigated the association between MD and subsequent BC, considering invasiveness, means of detection, pathologic subtype, and the time elapsed since mammographic exploration and BC diagnosis. METHODS: BC cases occurring in the population of women who attended screening from 1997 through 2004 in Navarre, a Spanish region with a fully consolidated screening program, were identified via record linkage with the Navarre Cancer Registry (n = 1,172)...

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) testing is more sensitive for the detection of high-grade cervical lesions than is cytology, but detection of HPV by DNA screening in two screening rounds 5 years apart has not been assessed. The aim of this study was to assess whether HPV DNA testing in the first screen decreases detection of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) grade 3 or worse, CIN grade 2 or worse, and cervical cancer in the second screening. METHODS: In this randomised trial, women aged 29-56 years participating in the cervical screening programme in the Netherlands were randomly assigned to receive HPV DNA (GP5+/6+-PCR method) and cytology co-testing or cytology testing alone, from January, 1999, to September, 2002...

BACKGROUND: To describe the variation in PSA level by age group and screening round in the ERSPC centres and the variation in cancer detection rates in relation to the underlying prostate cancer incidence. METHODS: Individual data on men invited for the first and second screening rounds according to protocol (excluding early recalls and interval cancers) were obtained from the central database of the ERSPC (cut-off date 31st December 2006). PURPOSE: Accurate and reliable data on the prevalence of adolescents' sexual behavior are paramount for effective sexual and reproductive health intervention. Adolescents' sexual behavior has been widely studied. However, scholars have raised concerns about the accuracy and reliability of self-reported sexual behavior by adolescents. Previous research shows high levels of adolescent sexual activity in urban informal settlements; yet, the accuracy of self-reported sexual experience in these settings is understudied...

BACKGROUND: In many countries high participation is an explicit target in screening programmes. The desire for high participation often appears to drive screening policy, although it is increasingly recognized that encouraging high participation may impinge upon the rights of an individual to make an informed choice. One argument offered in support of high participation is that it improves the cost-effectiveness of screening. This is questionable on theoretical grounds, and empirically there are conflicting results...

Malnutrition is a problem at varying proportions in developing countries, and anthropometry is a simple tool to assess its magnitude in children. This study was aimed at identifying the prevalence of malnutrition among 256 children of rural areas of Karnataka in South India, who attended the aanganwadis. The value of using various field-based formulae and of various anthropometric indicators used for classification of malnutrition was also studied. The children, aged 12-60 months, came from villages located at the outskirts of Bangalore city...

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of the prevalent round of the NHS breast screening programme on the whole population of women aged 50-64 during the period 1988-92, by comparing the numbers of cancers detected at screening with those diagnosed symptomatically, in one United Kingdom health region (population 3.5 million). To relate this impact to the achievement of national quality standards and the observed sensitivity and specificity of the programme. METHOD: The breast screening programme computer systems and the Thames Cancer Registry database were used to diagnose cancers in women aged 50-64 during the period 1988-1992, who were classified into screen detected, interval cases, eligible but not yet invited, non-attenders, and those not registered with the programme...

A total of 45,960 women aged 25-59 years at the first screening were invited to participate.
