Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common cancer in individuals with fair skin type (I-II) and steadily increasing in incidence (70% of skin malignancy). It is locally invasive but metastasis is usually very rare, with an estimated incidence of 0.0028%-0.55%. Conventional therapy is surgery, especially for the H region of the face and infiltrative lesions; in case of inoperable tumors, radiotherapy is a valid option. Recently, topical photodynamic therapy (PDT) has become an effective treatment in the management of superficial and small nodular BCC...

The onset of schizophrenic disorders generally occurs in late adolescence/early adulthood. However, in 75% of the cases, the onset is preceded by a prodromal stage. Subjects concerned by these prodromal symptoms are defined at "high risk" for psychosis (30% of conversion to psychosis in the next year). Early detection programs aim at improving the recognition of the prodromal symptoms in order to develop appropriate early interventions that will delay or prevent conversion to psychosis or reduce the duration of untreated psychosis (DUP)...

Neuroblastoma (NB) is the second most common solid pediatric tumor and is characterized by clinical and biological heterogeneity, and stage-IV of the disease represents 50% of all cases. Considering the limited success of present chemotherapy treatment, it has become necessary to find new and effective therapies. In this context, our approach consists of identifying and targeting key molecular pathways associated with NB chemoresistance. This study has been carried out on three stage-IV NB cell lines with different status of MYCN amplification...

The high mobilization activity of neutrophils as a capacity of momentary feed-back reaction to factually any external stimuli, make it possible to use them in various diagnostic systems in vitro. Among them is the automated test system of chemiluminescent detection of functional activity of peripheral blood neutrophils in parallel response to luminol, opsonizing zymosan and different antigens. This approach makes it possible to evaluate the initial and induced activity of phagocytes and its dynamics in case of adding in vitro to test system of one or another allergen...

When the adaptive response (AR) was studied on human blood lymphocytes, a new dependence was discovered. This dependence defines the direction of the radiosensitivity change after a low dose of irradiation. Using micronucleus (MN) test with cytochalasin B the dependence between the cell reaction after low level irradiation and radiosensititvity (the effect after irradiation at the dose of 1 Gy) was observed. The negative correlation between the frequency of AR manifestation, sensibilization, intermediate links and radiosensitivity was discovered...

The Reconquista River (RR), one of the most polluted watercourses in Argentina, receives effluent discharges from heavily industrialized and highly populated settlements. During winter and summer, the floodplain remains dry, producing the oxidation of sulfide and organic matter present in the sediment, making heavy metals more bioaccessible. Dispersion of this sediment occurs, and thus harmful effects on the pulmonary health of residents and workers inhabiting the RR bank may take place. The authors characterized the sediment particles of the RR (RR-PM) morphologically by scanning electron microscopy and its elemental composition by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) sequential extraction...

Gliomas, defined as tumors of glial origin, represent between 2-5 percent of all adult cancer and comprise the majority of primary brain tumors. Infiltrating gliomas, with an incidence of more than 40 percent of brain tumors, are the most common and destructive primary brain tumors for which conventional therapies have not significantly improved patient outcome. In fact, patients suffering from malignant gliomas have poor prognoses and the majority have local tumor recurrence after treatment. Tumor growth and spread of tumor cells depend basically upon angiogenesis and on functional abnormalities of tumor cells in the control of apoptosis, as they are paradigmatic for their intrinsic resistance to multiple pro-apoptotic stimuli...

The data is presented concerning the implementation of nano-particles of aurum in the diagnostics of systemic lupus erythematosus. It is demonstrated that nano-particles sensibilized by deoxyribonucleoprotein are able to detect the specific antibodies--the known markers of systemic lupus erythematosus. To optimize the reaction various approaches were applied. The comparative analysis was made including latex-agglutination technique, immune-enzyme analysis and fluorescence immunoassay. It is demonstrated that the given system is characterized by very high sensibility to determine the specific antibodies and hence can be effectively applied in diagnostics process...

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a clinically well-defined, chronic-intermittant, genetically predisposed skin disease. The increasing number of adult cases observed in the last years has turned the attention to ascertaining factors eliciting skin symptoms. Studies have revealed numerous environmental components (e.g. contact and aeroallergens) that may play an important role in sustaining the symptoms. The aim of the study was to search for contact allergens and aeroallergens triggering the skin disease in adult AD patients...

Use of antibiotics can't completely solve the problem of brucellosis treatment, especially its chronic forms, because antibacterial preparations do not eliminate main pathogenetic factor of the disease--sensibilization of the macroorganism. It makes actual the question about complex immuno- and antibacterial therapy. Long-term clinical experience proved high effectiveness of a therapeutic brucellosis vaccine.
