Lanthanide (LnIII )-doped sodium gadolinium tetrafluoride (NaGdF4 ) nanoparticles have been excelled as attractive upconversion systems for anti-counterfeiting or energy conversion for instance, with a special interest in the visible upconversion of EuIII and TbIII . The core@shell architecture has enabled the bright upconversion of EuIII and TbIII in this matrix by interfacial energy transfer sensibilized by the TmIII /YbIII pair. Another approach to enable EuIII and TbIII upconversion could be the interparticle energy transfer (IPET) between LnIII -doped sensitizer and acceptor nanoparticles...

Chlamydia abortus , although poorly recognized as a human pathogen, is a zoonotic microorganism that can cause many different symptoms in humans, including subclinical infection and fatal illnesses in pregnant women. C. abortus is one of the most common causes of ovine and caprine infectious abortion worldwide, known as the causative agent of the enzootic abortion of ewes (EAE) or ovine enzootic abortion (OEA). To estimate C. abortus seroprevalence and the risk factors related to C. abortus in small ruminants, the sera from 3045 animals (both sheep and goat) belonging to 202 herds were tested and a questionnaire investigating flock management was administered...

Multianalyte detection and analogue discrimination are extremely valuable frontier areas for their wide applications in environmental, medical, clinical and industrial analyses. Nowadays, researchers rack their brains on how to develop excellent multianalyte chemosensors that have presented huge challenges in designing high-efficient fluorescent sensing materials and constructing high-throughput detection methods. In this paper, we propose a novel strategy to utilize the dual-emission fluorescent detection platform as a lab-on-a-molecule, arising from the disalicylaldehyde-coordinated hybrid H2 Qj3 /Tb based terbium sensibilization coupled excited-state intramolecular proton transfer effects...

Despite the significant advances and mechanistic understanding of tumor processes, therapeutic agents against different types of cancer still have a high rate of recurrence associated with the development of resistance by tumor cells. This chemoresistance involves several mechanisms, including the programming of glucose metabolism, mitochondrial damage, and lysosome dysfunction. However, combining several anticancer agents can decrease resistance and increase therapeutic efficacy. Furthermore, this treatment can improve the effectiveness of chemotherapy...

Radiotherapy is an important therapeutic method for patients with cancer. However, radioresistance can cause treatment failure. Thus, there is an urgent need to investigate mechanisms of radioresistance and identity markers that could be used to predict radioresistance and prognosis of post-radiotherapy cancer patients. In the present study, we propose HOXA1 as a candidate biomarker of intrinsic radioresistance in multiple cancer types. By analyzing data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), we found that HOXA1 was aberrantly upregulated in multiple cancers, and that elevated HOXA1 was significantly associated with poor prognosis of post-radiotherapy head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) and low-grade glioma (LGG) patients...

TiO2 -based materials have been developing rapidly as eco-friendly photocatalysts, but the inherent defects limited their application, such as rapid recombination of photogenerated electrons and wide bandgap. To obtain high-efficient TiO2 /carbonaceous photocatalysts (TiO2 /C), we prepared the nanocomposite by carbonizing titanium alginate coordination compound and studied their photocatalytic performance against methylene blue (MB) under simulated sunlight irradiation. The resultant nanocomposites were characterized by FT-IR, XPS, XRD, SEM-EDS, TG-DTG, UV-DRS, and N2 adsorption-desorption analysis...

Although PCR is a typical temperature-variable amplification technique for nucleic acids, it still faces challenges in rapid screening, such as low speed, poor sensitivity, inferior visualization, and weak stability. In this paper, a universal functional nucleic acid (FNA) lateral flow magnetic biosensor was constructed using blocking super PCR (BS-PCR) and a magnetic test strip (MTS). In theory, the visualized and magnetic output of dsDNA-based amplicons were achieved via ssDNA/dsDNA conversion by blocking linkers in the PCR primers and magnetic probes...

In this report, a fluorescent sensing method for paraquat based on gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) is proposed. It was found that paraquat could quench both glutathione-capped AuNCs (GSH-AuNCs) and β-cyclodextrin-modified GSH-AuNCs (GSH/β-CDs-AuNCs). The modification of β-CDs on the surface of GSH-AuNCs obviously enhanced the fluorescence intensity of GSH-AuNCs and improved the sensitivity of paraquat sensing more than 4-fold. This sensibilization was ascribed to the obvious fluorescence intensity enhancement of GSH-AuNCs by β-CDs and the "host-guest" interaction between paraquat and β-CDs...

Herein, a series of organic molecules were designed through locating different substituents on the compound (WD8-c-1) to develop their performances used as the sensitizers in the field of dye-sensitized solar cells. The geometry and relevant electronic properties of WD8-c-1 and its derivatives were simulated at the B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) level. The absorption spectra were calculated using the TD-PBE0/6-31+G(d,p) method. These calculated results show that the type and position of the substituents strongly affected the distributions of frontier molecular orbitals and the energy gaps for the WD8-c-1-derived molecules...

Lam proteins transport sterols between the membranes of different cellular compartments. In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the LAM gene family consists of three pairs of paralogs. Because the function of paralogous genes can be redundant, the phenotypes of only a small number of LAM gene deletions have been reported; thus, the role of these genes in yeast physiology is still unclear. Here, we surveyed the phenotypes of double and quadruple deletants of paralogous LAM2(YSP2)/LAM4 and LAM1(YSP1)/LAM3(SIP3) genes that encode proteins localized in the junctions of the plasma membrane and endoplasmic reticulum...

The long-term survival of osteosarcoma has remained unchanged in the last several decades. Immunotherapy is proved to be a promising therapeutic strategy against osteosarcoma, especially for those with metastasis. Our previous study explored the sensibilization of zoledronate (ZOL) in γδ T cell-mediated cytotoxicity against osteosarcoma, but we have not yet elucidated the specific mechanism. Besides, high concentration is required to achieve these effects, whereas plasma ZOL concentration declines rapidly in the circulation...

A new fibroin/dodecanol floating solidification microextraction, coupled with high performance liquid chromatography, was developed and applied for enrichment and quantification of the trace flavonoids in traditional Chinese medicine and biological samples. Also, fibroin sensibilization mechanism was described, and influence of sample matrix to enrichment factor was investigated. In this method, a homogeneous fibroin/dodecanol of dispersed solution was employed as microextraction phase to flavonoids (myricetin, quercetin, isorhamnetin, chrysin, kaempferide), the several critical parameters affecting the performance, such as organic extractant, amount of fibroin in organic extractant, volume of extraction phase, dispersant, salt concentration, pH of sample phase, stirring rate, extraction time, and volume of sample phase were tested and optimized...

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common cancer in individuals with fair skin type (I-II) and steadily increasing in incidence (70% of skin malignancy). It is locally invasive but metastasis is usually very rare, with an estimated incidence of 0.0028%-0.55%. Conventional therapy is surgery, especially for the H region of the face and infiltrative lesions; in case of inoperable tumors, radiotherapy is a valid option. Recently, topical photodynamic therapy (PDT) has become an effective treatment in the management of superficial and small nodular BCC...
