Background: Endocrine profiles have been measured on blood samples obtained immediately post-competition from 693 elite athletes from 15 Olympic Sports competing at National or International level; four were subsequently excluded leaving 689 for the current analysis. Methods: Body composition was measured by bioimpedance in a sub-set of 234 (146 men and 88 women) and from these data a regression model was constructed that enabled 'estimated' lean body mass and fat mass to be calculated on all athletes...

OBJECTIVE/CONTEXT: The free androgen index (FAI) is known to give erroneous results in men but it is still a commonly used test for the investigation of hyperandrogenism in women. This study aimed to compare the results of the FAI with the gold standard equilibrium dialysis method for free testosterone in women. DESIGN/PATIENTS: Free serum testosterone T (ED-T) and total serum T (T) were measured by equilibrium dialysis and LC-MS/MS in patients with polycystic ovarian syndrome (n=130), normal female controls (n=53) and normal males (n=120)...

Hypogonadism in males is associated with increased body fat and altered postprandial metabolism, but mechanisms remain poorly understood. Using a cross-over study design, we investigated the effects of short-term sex hormone suppression with or without testosterone add-back on postprandial metabolism and the fate of dietary fat. Eleven healthy males (age: 29 ± 4.5 year; BMI: 26.3 ± 2.1 kg/m2 ) completed two 7-day study phases during which hormone levels were altered pharmacologically to produce a low sex hormone condition (gonadotropin releasing hormone antagonist, aromatase inhibitor, and placebo gel) or a testosterone add-back condition (testosterone gel)...

Background: Serum testosterone levels and insulin sensitivity both decrease with age. Severe testosterone deficiency is associated with the development of insulin resistance. However, the effects of long-term testosterone administration on insulin sensitivity in older men with low or low-normal testosterone levels remain unknown. Methods: The Testosterone Effects on Atherosclerosis in Aging Men Trial was a placebo-controlled, randomized, double-blind trial. The participants were 308 community-dwelling men, >60-years, with total testosterone 100-400ng/dL or free testosterone<50pg/mL...

BACKGROUND: Testosterone, the most important androgen produced by the testes, plays an integral role in male health. Testosterone levels are increasingly being checked in primary healthcare as awareness of the risks of male hypogonadism grows. AIM: To investigate what tests are performed to screen for hypogonadism and to exclude secondary hypogonadism. DESIGN AND SETTING: All participants attended general practices in the UK. METHODS: Data search was performed using the EMIS®: clinical database (provider of the majority of GP operating systems in Cheshire)...

Low testosterone (T) in men, especially its free fraction, has been associated with loss of energy. In accordance, orchidectomy (ORX) in rodents results in decreased physical activity. Still, the mechanisms through which T stimulates activity remain mostly obscure. Here, we studied voluntary wheel running behavior in three different mouse models of androgen deficiency: ORX, androgen receptor (AR) knock-out (ARKO) and sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG)-transgenic mice, a novel mouse model of "low free T". Our results clearly show a fast and dramatic action of T stimulating wheel running, which is not explained by its action on muscle, as evidenced by neuromuscular studies and in a muscle-specific conditional ARKO mouse model...

AIMS: One third of males with type 2 diabetes have hypogonadism, characterized by low total and free testosterone concentrations. We hypothesized that this condition is associated with a compensatory increase in the expression of androgen receptors (AR) and that testosterone replacement reverses these changes. We also measured estrogen receptor and aromatase expression. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a randomized double-blind placebo controlled trial. 32 hypogonadal and 32 eugonadal men with type 2 diabetes were recruited...

Several groups have reported the important role of estradiol (E2) and testosterone (T) in postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP). Because aromatase catalyzes the conversion of T to E2, the purpose of this study was to determine the influence of aromatase activity on the bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal women. A total of 344 postmenopausal women were selected for this study. Serum E2, T, sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), calcium (Ca), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), C-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen (CTX), and procollagen type I amino-terminal propeptide (PINP) were examined...

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) appears to be related to sexual dysfunction, especially if associated with obvious clinical and hormonal signs of hyperandrogenism. The objective of this study was to determine the correlation of PCOS and its hormonal and clinical parameters with sexual function. This prospective, cross-sectional study conducted on 18-45-year-old PCOS women (according to the Rotterdam criteria), who were referred to the Reproductive Endocrinology Research Center, Iran, was invited to participate from January 2012 to December 2015...

Sellar plasmacytomas are rare and the differential diagnosis with non-functioning pituitary adenomas might be difficult because of clinical and radiological resemblance. They usually present with neurological signs and intact anterior pituitary function. Some may already have or eventually progress to multiple myeloma. We describe a case associated with extensive anterior pituitary involvement, which is a rare form of presentation. A 68-year-old man was referred to our Endocrinology outpatient clinic due to gynecomastia, reduced libido and sexual impotence...

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: For transgender men (TGM), gender-affirmation surgery (GAS) is often the final stage of their gender transition. GAS involves creating a neophallus, typically using tissue remote from the genital region, such as radial forearm free-flap phalloplasty. Essential to this process is vaginectomy. Complexity of vaginal fascial attachments, atrophy due to testosterone use, and need to preserve integrity of the vaginal epithelium for tissue rearrangement add to the intricacy of the procedure during GAS...

Inflammation, both acute and chronic is associated with testosterone deficiency, raising the possibility of a direct causal link. One potential trigger for inflammation in obese men is the passage of intestinal bacteria into the circulation due to a breakdown in mucosal barrier integrity. Recently we hypothesized that this endotoxin exposure may cause androgen deficiency in obese men. To test this hypothesis, we analysed the relationship between serum levels of lipopolysaccharide binding protein (LBP), an indirect measure of endotoxin exposure, against male reproductive hormones, inflammatory markers (CRP, IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α) and adiposity in 75 men...

OBJECTIVES: Serum testosterone (T) levels in men decline with age. Low T levels are associated with sarcopenia and frailty in men aged >80 years. T levels have not previously been directly associated with disability in older men. We explored associations between T levels, frailty and disability in a cohort of octogenarian men. SETTING: Data from all men from Life and Living in Advanced Age Cohort Study in New Zealand, a longitudinal cohort study in community-dwelling older adults...
