BACKGROUND/AIMS: To investigate whether brown zona pellucida (ZP) of oocytes affects the outcome of fertilization, embryo quality and pregnancy rate in in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF-ET). METHODS: Based on the ZP color of their oocytes, a total number of 703 patients dated from 2012 to 2014 were divided into a normal egg group (group A) and a brown oocyte group (group B), with 629 and 74 cases, respectively. Clinical characteristics, gonadotropin (Gn) days, Gn dosage, serum hormone levels on the day of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) injection, ZP thickness (ZPT) of the eggs, fertilization rate, rescue intracytoplasmic sperm injection (rICSI) rate, good-quality embryo rate and pregnancy rate were compared between the two groups...

INTRODUCTION: Although new diagnostic abilities are being utilised increasingly yet early detection of tubal pregnancy remains a challenge. The use of highly sensitive hCG kits has facilitated the early diagnosis of a pregnancy. But it takes time to determine the localisation of the pregnancy. Early diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy may reduce the morbidity of ectopic pregnancy. AIM: This study was conducted to analyse the cul-de-sac and serum βhCG ratio in tubal ectopic pregnancy cases which may be a new diagnostic approach for ectopic pregnancy...

There are very few studies on valvular heart disease in women. There is a sex influence in the prevalence of some types of valve disease: it is well known that rheumatic mitral stenosis is very common in women but degenerative valve disease affects both sexes in a similar way. In degenerative aortic stenosis several physiopathological differences have been reported in women: the amount of calcium is lower than in men and the left ventricle generates higher gradients and hypercontractile response in women. Regarding prognosis it is well accepted that women have higher mortality rates than men in cardiac surgery, both in coronary surgery and in valvular surgery...

OBJECTIVE: Gonadotropins used in controlled ovarian stimulation have been increasing in number. Beside the recombinant preparations such as rec-FSH, rec-LH and h-hMG human-derived preparations have entered the market. We decided to compare the effects of rec-FSH and HP-hMG with GnRHa on embryo quality and pregnancy outcome in women undergoing an IVF cycle. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this study, data of 87 patients who had applied to our center from 2007 to 2008 and who had met all inclusion criteria, were analyzed...

OBJECTIVE: To study the perinatal outcome of monochorionic (MC) twin pregnancies. METHODS: The 197 cases of MC twin pregnancies delivered in obstetric unit of Prince of Wales Hospital from Jan. 2005 to Dec. 2010 were enrolled in this retrospective study, which were divided into 3 groups:uncomplicated MC pregnancy (136 cases), twin to twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS, 32 cases), selective intrauterine growth restriction (sIUGR, 29 cases). RESULTS: (1) The gestational age at delivery in TTTS (30 weeks vs...

Cervical cancer is an important woman's health problems worldwide, especially in low socio-economic countries. The aim of this study was to compare the Pap smear screening results between Akha hill tribe and urban women who live in Chiang Rai province, Thailand. Screening was conducted for 1,100 Akha women and 1,100 urban women who came to have the Pap smear at Chiangrai Prachanukroh Hospital and 1 private cytology laboratory from January to June 2008. The demographic characteristics and factors related to abnormal Pap smears of these women were gathered using closed model questionnaires...

Extragastrointestinal stromal tumors (EGISTs) are mesenchymal neoplasms without connection to the gastrointestinal tract. Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) and EGIST are similar according to their clinicopathologic and histomorphologic features. Both of them most often express immunoreactivity for CD-117, a c-kit proto-oncogene protein. The coexistence of GIST and pregnancy is very rare, with only two cases reported in the literature. In this paper, we presented the first EGIST case during pregnancy in the literature...

The article presents the case of a patient who after her first pregnacy, during the immediate postpartum period, suffered a femoral supracondylar fracture complicated by bone marrow edema syndrome (BMES), also known as regional temporary osteoporosis (RTO). The fracture of the distal femur was treated with an open reduction and internal fixation of the distal femur by means of a minimally invasive procedure.

OBJECTIVE: Damage to the developing brain may be caused by maternal environment, nutritional deficiencies, failure of protective mechanisms, etc. Further, the developing brain may be damaged by intrauterine ischemia or by ischemia in newborns complicated by perinatal asphyxia. There is an effort to find agents with neuroprotective effect on the developing brain. The aim was to study the effect of the new pyridoindole antioxidant SMe1EC2 on the resistance of offspring hippocampus exposed to ischemia in vitro after treatment of mothers...

BACKGROUND: Smoking during pregnancy has been associated with socioeconomic determinants and it is recognized as the most important preventable risk factor for an unsuccessful pregnancy outcome. Turkey has national data on the prevalance of smoking during pregnancy; however there is no data on the characteristics of the high-risk population. This is a field study that aims to identify socioeconomic determinants for smoking during pregnancy as well as differentiating the daily and occasional smokers...

Vascular injury increases access and binding of plasma-derived factor VII to perivascular cell membrane-bound tissue factor (TF). The resulting TF/VIIa complex promotes hemostasis by cleaving pro-thrombin to thrombin leading to the fibrin clot. In human pregnancy, decidual cell-expressed TF prevents decidual hemorrhage (abruption). During placentation, trophoblasts remodel decidual spiral arteries into high conductance vessels. Shallow trophoblast invasion impedes decidual vascular conversion, producing an inadequate uteroplacental blood flow that elicits abruption-related placental ischemia...

Background. Disorders in development of the hip in the uterus are caused mainly by mechanical factors. Their influence has been established on the basis of the results of examinations of newborns from singleton pregancies. Malposition of the fetus and the lack of space in the uterus are present in higher frequency in twin pregnancies. Thus, it is probable, that twin pregnacy may be a risk factor in developmental dysplasia of the hip. <br /> Material and methods. We examined clinically and ultrasonographically 308 hip joints of 154 newborn twins and compare the values of the alpha related to different position in uterus, birthweight, gender, length of gestation and mode of delivery...
